Thailand on Saturday (January 8th) reported 8,263 new COVID-19 cases, 2,865 recoveries and 14 additional deaths over the past 24 hours.

▶︎ Infections outside prisons: 8,153. Prisons: 110

▶︎ Recoveries: 2,2865

▶︎ Total infections since April 1: 2,232,176

▶︎ Total recoveries since April 1: 2,163,836

Saturday’s cases bring the total number of COVID-19 infections in Thailand to 2,261,039 with 21,813 deaths.

The news comes as The Thai Ministry of Public Health urged the public to refrain from drinking alcohol, visiting poorly ventilated areas, and doing other risky activities to help reduce the spread of the Covid-19 Omicron variant.

Dr. Opas Karnkawinpong, Deputy Permanent Secretary for Public Health, stated late this week that the number of cases of Covid-19 in Thailand has increased significantly after the New Year holidays as predicted.

The confusion is very evident.  Elsewhere in the world these numbers would be close to 2x's what it was 2 days ago, and so on. Today we should be seeing almost 12k cases if we extrapolate from 2 days ago.  Someone is either confused as to where to gather the numbers from as we can see by both the above sets of numbers, and then the possibility of a lack of testing this entire week.

Maybe people have tested positive on the ATK tests and instead of retesting with a PCR test they have gone into self isolation or better yet since they are asymptomatic they do not give a flying f and need to continue to work as there is no life line for them as there is in the western countries.

This thing is headed to 50 k a day. with low death rate. In hospital now after both shots of moderna. stay safe

The UK is testing almost 2m per day

Thailand IMO opinion do their best to conseal numbers because they think it reflects well on Prayuth and his mates who continue to hold power

on another note - worth readinging the daily Mail online which has some emerging data as more is learnt about omicron - we are not there yet but the trend is still looking very positive

Reflecting back 2 years I wonder would we be talking about this if omicron had been the very first covid virus - I don't think we would

Meanwhile, the bodies continue to pile up worldwide:

2,025 deaths in the US
229 deaths in the UK
284 deaths in Germany
223 deaths in Italy
140 deaths in South Africa
etc.

A bit of confusion this morning when the number of new cases released by the CCSA (8,263) didn’t match the dashboard of the Department of Disease Control (9,508). The DDC has since reduced their number to match that of the CCSA. Makes you wonder which one is correct. #Thailand

Meaningless unless you compare it to something.  Could be worse, could be better.

What's the death rate vs Delta?

Try comparing it to deaths from the common cold.

In UK, the death rate appears very low. We really need a bit of proportion and context here.

Also in the UK, the unsung hero appears to be AZ, due its T cell protection, and that may bode well for Thailand too.  It really is a life saver for old people, and possibly the best overall.

I believe Thais are more accessible to public health advice, and this combined with some regulation may keep cases down to around 50k a day imo, compared with 170k in UK and some European countries.
