Thailand reports 16,462 new COVID-19 cases, 27 deaths, 10,868 recoveries

Thailand on Wednesday (February 16) reported 16,462 new COVID-19 cases, 10,868 recoveries and 27 additional deaths over the past 24 hours. 

 

▶︎ Infections outside prisons: 16,326. Prisons: 136

▶︎ Recoveries: 10,868

 

Wednesday’s cases bring the total number of COVID-19 infections in Thailand to 2,639,062 with 22,516 deaths.

 

The news comes as the main concerns surrounding the rapid transmissibility of the COVID-19 Omicron variant, which accounted for 97.2% of samplings of infections last week, are not hospitalisation or mortality rates, but the long-term effects on the mental and physical health of the patients, known as long COVID, according to a senior Thai doctor.

 

These symptoms may disrupt patients’ ways of life, their families, their working efficiency, as well as having long-term economic and social impacts, at both the individual and national levels, according to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Thira Woratanarat of the Faculty of Medicine at Chulalongkorn University.

Phuket has Thailand's highest positivity rate at 62%. There are 8 Provinces with a positivity rate of between 35% - 62%.

If Phuket really has the highest positivity rate then the Peua Thai might be right that test and go is driving infections. I am not sure myself but it does point that way. Unless of course Phuket does more testing then other provinces.

Yes however that positivity rate of 62% is for community cases only. As a comparison the test positivity rate of arrivals is averaging about 3%

Wow, looks like the ATK tests are almost catching up to the PCR-RT test positives.  Makes you wonder how many more are testing at home and not reporting the positive results and just going on about their daily lives.  Even over here where I am currently the numbers are dropping down pretty quickly, and I am still testing myself weekly as I do when I am back home in Bangkok.

There was a post several days ago quoting WHO? data giving the likely mean infection figure at over 170,000 per day.

I think we've heard enough fear stories. I would rather read posts about how Thailand is going to open up without all those exaggerated measures.

980 primary schools in Nakhon Ratchasima suspend on-site classes due to COVID-19

 

A total of 980 primary schools, or 70% of all the schools in Thailand’s north-eastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima, have suspended on-site classes in favour of online learning after clusters of COVID-19 infections were detected in several districts in the province.

 

In the latest development, the provincial health office reported clusters of infections in four schools on Monday, in the districts of Muang, Chakkarat, Bua Yai, and Phra Thong Kham.

Surely BKK Brian,

If the positivity is 62 % on Phuket, with a number of 496, then the number of infections for arrivals is 90, something is wrong with the Math, or am I seeing something wrong. ?.

90 a percentage of 496 is roughly 15 % of the total infections, not 3 %, and 15 % of 62 % is 9 % of the total population tested positive.

I am confused, me thinks.

The 62% is for community infection only. The arrivals is far less than that around 3%

Have to remember every tourist is tested twice, whether they have symptoms or not. Locals are probably only testing if they don't feel well or they are forced too with regards to close contacts or employment.

There seems to be many reports of a lack of testing / mask wearing there. Their infection rates are much higher than Bangkoks, adjusted for population size.
