Gotland is a lot bigger and much better defended than Snake Island, which has caused the Russians so many losses and problems already.

Finland have Åland what is problematic place because its demilitarise zone. They have own "parlament" Aland belong to Finland even they have always want to be part of Sweden. Even Russia has own Embassy there. Defend of that islands is Finland's duty. Still they not allow Finland put military forces there!

Sounds like they need to come up with new agreement then! Quite a strategic location.

A new Human Rights Watch report has documented claims of torture, summary execution and other abuses of civilians by Russian forces in north-eastern Ukraine.

US President Joe Biden has hammered Russia over what he calls "major war crimes" committed in Ukraine, and has underscored his resolve to hold Moscow accountable for launching the largest land war in Europe since World War Two.

Unfortunately the public in Russia has been denied access to it and other reports.

Russia Restricts Access To HRW Website Over Statements On War In Ukraine

Russia's communications regulator says it has restricted access to the website of Human Rights Watch (HRW) as a result of the group's statements over Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

BBC Report

First Russian soldier to stand trial for war crime today

A Russian soldier is due to stand trial today for allegedly killing an unarmed Ukrainian civilian - the first war crime case to go to court since Russia's invasion began.

Sgt Vadim Shyshimarin is accused of shooting a 62-year-old man in the head through an open car window in the north-eastern village of Chupakhivka.

He faces up to life in prison under the penalties stated in the section of the Ukrainian criminal code that addresses the laws and customs of war.

He's pleaded guilty:

NEW: A Russian soldier pleads guilty in a Kyiv court to killing a 62-year-old civilian in what could be considered a war crime. The soldier had acknowledged: “I was ordered to shoot, I fired an automatic burst at him, he fell. We drove on."

I hope ordinary Russians watch this stuff, if they can, they will realise they are being taken back into the dark ages by a fruitcake, instead of moving forward being like the majority of the rest of Europe, free and integrated ...

But, as with other fruitcakes, Hitler, Mussolini etc, their time came...????

I sent the link from Twitter on the 60 MINUTES interview to friends in Russia. They could only see an ERR_CONNECTION_RESET page.

They are being kept in the dark. They know only how to recite parrot fashion the whole Nazi and defending homeland propaganda. Zero ability to discuss and debate.

Erdoğan blocks Nato accession talks with Sweden and Finland | Financial Times (ft.com)

Or, if that ones blocked by a paywall:

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/ukraine-latest-finland-sweden-hand-105700818.html

"Finland and Sweden handed in their formal applications to join NATO, but the process could drag out as Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan blocked the alliance from starting the accession process, making clear he is frustrated with the approach of several alliance members to Kurdish groups".

I too hope this senator cannot stop the bill. But he has already successfully stalled it. And this at the time when, according to many sources, the Ukrainian army is running out of ammo.

“Congress is said to have acted with extraordinary speed and bipartisan solidarity after Biden warned that aid to Ukraine is likely to stop next week without a new influx of funds. In a rare show of bipartisanship, both majority leader Chuck Schumer and minority leader Mitch McConnell co-promoted the bill”.

Ah ok, thats a separate package of 40 billion aid that he stalled. The Lend lease is different and he cannot stop that

I feel for the fighters who have surrendered at the steelworks in Mariupol only now to be taken to a penal colony in Russia where they may face trumped up war crime trials. Out of the pan into the fire. If they knew that was going to happen I bet they would have  preferred to stay and fight until death.

Gives Putin a great justification for his denazification narrative.

Extra $40 billion in Ukraine aid finally made it through:

Senate passes $39.8 billion Ukraine aid bill, sending measure to Biden's desk

Washington — In a show of broad bipartisan support, the Senate on Thursday passed legislation providing another $39.8 billion to help Ukraine bolster its defenses against Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion after passage of the aid was stalled last week.

Boris also adding some extra military aid into the mix:

I updated the President on support flowing to Ukraine’s defence, including long-range artillery, shore-to-ship missiles and unmanned drones. This is part of our additional £1.3 billion military aid package for Ukraine.

Meanwhile on Russian state tv:

Russian state TV propagandists acknowledge that Moscow can't keep up with the West in terms of its economic capabilities. In light of the looming arms race, they hope that Russia's brain drain can be reversed—especially since Russia's borders with NATO are about to double.

Professor Alexei Fenenko, leading research fellow at the Institute of International Security Studies, says that for Russia, its war in Ukraine is a rehearsal for a potential larger conflict with NATO countries.

Well if it's a rehearsal, I'd have to say it bodes pretty badly for the Russians in case of the real performance.

As long as Russia keep their nukes out of the equation, that is….

The retired colonel who spoke out against the invasion, telling some uncomfortable truths on live Russian TV a few days ago, reappeared the following day.  He's changed his tune and is now singing from the Putin song book.  Amazing how persuasive the Russian choirmasters can be:

Russia is worried about the brain drain and is recalling the "specialists" who deserted the sinking ship by tracking their SIM cards. There may be less Russian nomads gracing Thailand's shores in the near future.

I think it’s been explained to him what could happen to him and his extended family when he continues to say things on TV that are not in line with the ‘official’ Kremlin narrative.
