Thai government maintains “neutral” position in Ukraine-Russia conflict

Here we go again with the (mostly) negative comments towards Thailand . . .  Why do we need to take a position (against Russia)? Why only white versus black, “who is not with us is against us”  . . . ? We do not know anything about the real thoughts and actions of politicians, military and other rich and powerful men, none of them having righteous motives

Many things are in the play, Freedom (we cherish it . . . euh . . . hello Covid vaccination mandate), Democracy (we fight for it . . . In the EU, the Commission takes the decisions, the Parliament handles only less important matters, just like in the old URSS), Economy (selling arms, controlling energy – think of North stream 2, . . .)  . . . these are some of the visible reasons. But there are more obscure reasons, one of them being the need for the USA to rally its NATO and EU allies to quell the beginning of some dissensions withing the group . . .

For me, it is wise for Thailand to take a neutral position.

So, if a Russian guy shot your family would you condemn his actions and want revenge on him ?

Were sanctions imposed on the US as they have been on Russia, and the Iraq and Afghanistan wars were not done alone by the US, as they were based upon terrorism removal as well...try again. Russia's attack is about reconfiguring Europe and re-uniting the former USSR.....

Not to mention the destruction and breakup of Nato, along with the capture of the " bottleneck "  ( Belarus and Ukraine )from Europe into Russia that Russia believes will be used by Nato Forces to invade their Country.

Regaining the finances lost to the Ukraine in payments for gas and Oil Pipelines crossing the Country.

Getting water re-established into the Crimea after Ukraine closed the only water supply Canal into the entire enclave

Capture of huge amounts of Oil and gas reserves and fields off the Coast of Ukraine

The Thai Government wants to play Jelly Fish while the most "neutral" country in the world (Switzerland) has taken a firm stance against this war?

I never realized what invertebrates they were. ????

The truly despicably pathetic thing is:

If Russia wins and assimilates Ukraine, Thailand will proudly proclaim that it has "always been with Russia".

Yet if Ukraine against all odds should survive this and Russia is being shunned by the world community, Thailand will proclaim that "in principle we always supported the cause of Ukraine's independence".

Right or wrong.

People were alive, and are now dead.

People had homes, now they have piles of rubble.

People were safe, now they aren't.

People had futures, now they don't.

Seems obvious to me where the blame lies.

Thailand doesn't want to offend Russia, since Thailand is a hot spot for Russian tourism.  Secondly, export market.  It is all about money.  I can't wait to see how Thailand is going to address the economic sanctions, the financial sanctions, and the airspace restrictions levied on Russia.  The PM's remarks lack any direction on addressing the atrocities directed at the Ukraine by Russia and it subordinates, Belarus and Chechen.

As unjust and cruel Russia's malicious attack on Ukraine is and as much as the world community is entirely right in condemning Russia for its despicable action, please let's not forget to also apply the same yardstick next time the United States of America unilaterally decide that they must "liberate" some foreign nation.

Remember Haiti, Grenada, Somalia, Iraq.

What's good for the goose should also be good for the gander.

People jump on the bandwagon it is black and white, right or wrong. They are only seeing thru their eyes and beliefs. The leader of Thailand is making a decision on what he thinks is best for the Thai people and the country of Thailand , he has no skin in this game. Even NATO will not put troops on the ground as Ukraine is not part of NATO.

Think about what you say in condemnation of other countries and people it is not all black and white. For some people I realize that is impossible because of their belief of black and white no shades of grey.

So you believe this is all about America instead of the rest of the world.  Bravo on you for being an America Basher....you are out in left field my friend.

I would not bash America especially, but imho people are not looking closely enough at the EU and how it operates and the results. Again, my opinion.

Yet on the UN resolution condemning Russian invasion of Ukraine Thailand is shown as "supporting " the resolution. 35 countries abstained (Pakistan,India and a slew of African countries including South Africa) with 5 against . So how does this square with their statement of neutrality??

So, if Thailand spoke out against Putin and Russia, do you think that Russia would withdraw from Ukraine and call the whole thing off ?

It will help for sure. The whole world is trying to ruin Russian's economy so they can't fuel their army in Ukraine.

I expected nothing less from one authoritarian government to another. China doing the same and it sad that it's still happening in the world in 2022

Beyond Japan is there one country in Asia, including India, that has a functioning democratic system that does not regularly reset to a strongman in charge? And remember what it took to get Japan to be that way. The US occupied the country, wrote their constitution, executed their war criminals, and made them produce Godzilla movies. Fortunately, they already had baseball. Maybe that's it. You need to have baseball to become a democracy.

Brickbat by name, Brickbat by nature. Putin is clearly the aggressor or are 90% of the countries (including many Russians) all wrong, now including Thailand who originally sat on the fence. Ukraine should target the stalled Russian convoys with incendiary weapons as the vehicles can't move in any direction and would act like dominoes along the lenght of the convoy.

Ruble actually. A plummeting currency. One Ruble doesn't even get you a single Baht anymore. Headed for parity with the 'satang' or Vietnamese dong.
