You can't cure stupid....,

No but you legislate against it.

24 hours mandatory for blowing the limit

30 days non negotiable for first time over

60 days hotel Bangkok second offense

1 year Bangkok hotel third

Death involved 10 years

These sentences would be mandatory and judges can not reduce them.

If a couple of people lose their jobs and families word will get out

Taking away license or no insurance just means business as normal.

365 driving here is dangerous these 7 days are DEADLY!

Department of Probation is appropriate  since getting caught a very small chance since set up tents are in the same place locals know where they are so you got to be real <deleted>.  Majority of the drunks are off the major roads nightly Songkran is just a bump in the road nothing changes.

Those caught slap on the wrist no national data based linked so probation over and over again then you got the mentality that s slap on the wrist you are doing the people a favor!

It's the same conversation every Songkran holiday

Number of accidents injured and deaths

No change just gets worse

We know the solutions but the Police will not enforce them

Heavier fines  losing their licences impounding their cars jailing them  could go on ????

Surin and Ubon Ratchathani had the highest number of drunk driving cases, each with 95, Nonthaburi had 90, and Bangkok had 77. In fact, the number of drunk driving cases on the second of the seven dangerous days this year was 98% higher than the previous year’s 18 cases.

What a wonderful piece of mathemagical analysis.

195 drunk cases should mean 195 drunk drivers currently held in police custody awaiting the courts resumption next week when they will all receive a custodial sentence. Their vehicles having been impounded will be waiting the crusher startung up next week.

But as others have said, provided the drunks drivers vehicles are in one piece, they will have continued their journey

SHAME on all involved.

Nothing New then is it ??????

This Government ( and others previously ) are by definition - Insane.

They continue to do the same thing ( nothing ) Year after Year, and expect the Drink Driving and subsequent carnage that follows to actually reduce.

Drinking to excess is inbred within the Culture of many Thais, and this is what needs to change.

Why are 7/11 Etc restricted in the Hours that Alcohol is on sale, when it can be bought round the corner at a Ma and Pa shop 24 Hrs a Day.

This is where the Booze needs to be restricted.

Until the Government really get serious about the Drinking Culture in Thailand, the results are going to remain dire.

Maybe some police generals in unmarked cars could make random checks of the checkpoints. That would wake the boys in brown up.

Pointless; they would wake up, do a dozen Wai's, wave goodbye and go right back to sleep !

They’re having a laugh, right? If I go and sit by any major road I could probably point out 923 drunk drivers in just a few hours, all by myself. And the RTP in all of Thailand can’t catch more than 923 in total? Pathetic.

Just curious... How can you identify the drivers which are not drunk ?

(I know, somewhat of a Thai bash), but half the drivers are driving so poorly, their road behaviour is the same as drunk drivers.

The only reason police generals would ever visit any checkpoint in person is to collect their brown envelopes. Although they doubtless have their lackeys to do that for them, since they probably don’t want to be seen doing that themselves.

I see it differently...   They’re not insane, they just genuinely do not care - Its all pantomime.

Every year we go through the same predictably sequences of news events... we’re now on the 7 deadly days. Next it will be poor reservoir management in the dry season etc etc...

The police don’t care, because those in positions of decision making power really do not care at all.

So... every year they simply go through the same piece of theatre 'to be seen to be doing something’... it's just a game of juvenile minds.

Every year there will be a crack-down on drunk drivers, just as every year there is a crack down on polluting vehicles, a crack down on not stopping at pedestrian crossings, a introduction to a new points system, a crackdown on helmets, a crack-down on street racers (motorcycles)... repeat on a yearly cycle...

Hmmmm, just imagine next year the road carnage for songkran with pot smoking drunk drivers.

I don't think that pot smoking things ever getting off the ground soon.

Smoking weed isn't as popular as it is in the West.

Drinking and amphetamine is the drugs of choice amongst young men who are the vast majority off idiot drivers.

SHAME on all involved.

There is no money to be made in drunk driving for BIB.

I went to a funeral in Suphanburi 2 weeks ago.

The younger men were into the whiskey while their wives stared at their phones.

Standard practice now.

I took the car keys, grabbed the wife and shot through (slowly).

Agreed.  All these offences came to light AFTER the accident.  None were the result of active police work yet there's 50,000 of the lazy beggars, all on overtime, all staring at their phones.

How many actual crimes do you think have ever been stopped by pro active police work. My own thinking is about zero any where in the world not just Thailand.

There has always been a massive amount of drunks on Thai roads, and more so at SongKran.

Officials are now surprised by the "new" information of drunks at SongKran

Much like covid testing, if you look you will find.

Indeed, but these stories attempting to solely blame alcohol consumption as the root cause are part of a bigger anti-alcohol agenda that we have seen manifested during COVID-19.

Who is going to enforce all this? You need a competent and reliable Police force to enforce, which Thailand doesn't have.

Only so that the Generals make sure that they collect their share of the loot. They got to that position by being the best at what the Police here do, scamming the public.
