Electric Vehicles in Thailand

So many ways to construct an argument either way but I bet in 5 years the data will confirm that EVS are the overwhelming best choice for consumers ( not businesses- I have no clue) that are only interested in economical functionality.

I don’t know if you have or are considering solar, but EVs and solar  work very well together.  If you are retired you can charge your EV from excess solar in the middle of the day but a weekend charge would probably cover your weekly commute.

If you can’t charge at home but do your grocery shopping once a week or meet friends for a coffee, you can charge your car for the week at the same time.

In addition many EVs come with Vehicle to Load (V2L) which allows the car to send power out. I have my EV plugged into my solar system at night to give over 6 Tesla Powerwalls of backup.

In a worse case scenario I would have 70% battery capacity left after 8 years which is equivalent to 4.5 Tesla Powerwalls. I don’t see myself selling my EV in 8 years time if the sales price is less than the price of the battery storage.

My original EV is now 4 years old and has only lost a couple of km of indicated range. I can afford to replace it with a shinny new EV, but it looks great and performs very well so why would I?

This is my setup:

Your assumption Thailand will follow, is I believe, false.   Two completely separate markets with separate circumstances.   What kickstarted the EV revolution here was BYD & GW

This is my setup:

I've watched a few of your vids a couple weeks back.  The EV supplying energy to your home is interesting.  My brother in the USA mentioned it yesterday and thought it was something that wasn't available yet but Tesla was soon to provide the capability.  I told him other companies already can do it but he wrote it off because he thinks Tesla drives the market.  He had never heard of BYD and he has a Porche EV.  Funny world...

Not just considering solar as you suggested. Currently a group of 4 people is banging around on the roof installing 7.8 kWh. Not sure how much of all this will result in usable power but even 25% of the 7.8 kWh Panels and 12 kwh storage should cover my needs now (2-5 kWh usage ).  EV I think in the next few years and more panels to charge.

Funny, I'm not 100% sure all the panels and batteries will ultimately make financial sense but I would say I'm 90% confident.  My numbers if correct have the new solar setup paying for itself in around 5 years.  If I had an EV and consumed more power I would think it would be about 2-3 year.

Fun to tinker around regardless.  I try not to take this all too seriously.  Only into it 125k baht for basically 8Kwh PV and 12 KWh storage.  I'll find out maybe today if it actually works 🙂

Do you mean The Heisenberg Principle?

Ohh, no, that is a different principle.  Heidelberg is a new quantum state that compel EV owners to post fake and misleading information on public forums,  so they can feel better about themselves and suppress buyers regrets 😉

It is rampant, but together we can keep it in check ✔️

Tesla has it on the cybertruck as well as V2H along with the Ford F150 Lightning and Chevy Silverado EV.

The V2H setups are very expensive for all three compared to my setup of feeding V2L directly into my solar system.

You can see in the figures for 2024 above that so far BYD are ranked 1,2,3 in Thailand

Tesla model 3 is 8th  and model Y is 15th

2023 Tesla performed a bit better but BYD only started selling in large numbers late in the year

Here are the figures for 2022 (anybody have 2021 and earlier?)

Yes, indeed.  Top 3 spots.  And, just wait until the Sealion 6 gets up and running.  We were at a BYD dealer to take a test drive and there were 5 buyers ahead of us doing the same thing.   Fortunately, the showroom had a very nice waiting area.  The dealership  was quite crowded with potential buyers, with a number also looking at the Atto 3, Seal, and the Dolphin.

@bandersnatch

They are also surpassing Tesla in battery production.  I'm going to using CATL batteries for storage.  Still putting together the details on how and who I will ne getting the sells from but think it will workout.  Won't be as pretty like your storage setup but should work I hope.  No Youtube vids of me tripping over cables 🙂

Do you think EV's can be the  best option for those that don't care if the car is ICE or an EV and just want the lowest cost per kilometer traveled?

I am not here to advise anyone what car is best to buy, but if you want an EV, there is only one way to find out 😉 😜.FB_IMG_1721847110790.jpg.32248432a963abdd0dd5ed3d68d11f80.jpg

The BYD Dolphin registrations spiked way up in July.   I expect the spike is the result of below late June promtion/price cut.

Also, the  BYD Atto is in 2nd place for the year vs the BYD Seal ....guess the article author forgot to sort the Total column...or he didn't forget and it just didn't sort properly.

I don't think there are numbers in the known Universe that can count the times we have seen SeñorLA's MG battery life cycle projection spreadsheet or heard about and seen YouTube videos of the Cherry 🍒 farms solar setup and lack of PEA meter, not to mention a broken down Porsche or someone who bought 5 EVs and still didn't learn from his mistakes.

Repetition seem to be EV owners favorite activity, I am just trying to blend in.

In this case, the post was not for you, but it never hurts to repeat humor, especially if you didn't understood the joke first time around  😉

Wasn't asking for your advice.  You would be one of the last people I would go to for advice regarding EVs for obvious reasons 🙂  Not an insult and the pic is funny.

Just saw my first Cyberster on the road. Not the greatest pic as there was someone in it so I didn't want to walk up and take a photo. Looked really good in yellow.

Have seen them in the motor show before but first time on the road.

Is that a bald-headed version of the ginger viking?

Little Elliot should learn to count to two ✌️.

At 11:40 he mention two problems.

1. Brand recognition

2. Elliot never made it past one and forgot this one. Amateur.

EV fans are as usual struggling with numbers.

Is repetition your new thing or just the result of yesterday's wine 🍷?

Gull-wing rear doors...now that seems like a pointless gimmick unless you have a private chauffeur and enjoy sitting in the back of your car.

Well, we do know they catch fire about 12 times more frequently than EV's.

Reduce that to 6 times in Thailand  🇹🇭

Thai EV fire 🔥 risk: 9.2 fire/billion miles

Tesla global: 5 fire/billion miles

ICE (USA): 55 fire/billion miles

1. Tesla 3 - September 20th, 2021, power pole collision Rama 2, Bangkok.

2. BYD Atto 3 - January 21st, 2023, house fire, Songkran. Traction battery did not burn.

3. BYD Seal - March 14th, 2024, Ratchaburi roll-over.

4. Porsche Taycan - May 24th, 2024, battery explosion, Paradise Car Showroom, Bangkok.

5. Neta-V - June 11th, 2024, median accident and fire, Saraburi.

6. Neta-V - June 12th, 2024, accident and fire at towing area, Tha Phra, Khon Kaen.

7. MG ES - June 22nd, 2024, hit axle part on the road, Chonburi motorway.

I don't accept your statistics.

Your sample size is too small (your brain too).

Fact avoidance again. Another way of saying it, is that Thai EVs are 84% more likely to catch fire 🔥 than the global Tesla average.

Can u help my small brain 🧠 to calculate if the circumference of a pie is pi or that rule does not apply for raspberry pies? 😊 😊 😊 😊
