The National Education Bill is set to enter the Parliament for further deliberation in September, sparking new hope for some but concern for others. 

 

The passage of this bill is likely to be concluded before the end of the year, and once it is enforced, it will affect not just students but also teachers and parents. Since education lies at the foundation of life, work and national prosperity, this bill will be responsible for shaping the future of everybody in Thailand.

 

Does it offer hope?

 

Education Minister Treenuch Thienthong says the bill, if passed, will be a key turning point for Thailand’s educational sector as it focuses on students’ performance and ability to apply their knowledge to real-life situations. It also aims to develop quality teachers who can educate children for a successful future.

So they will be teaching common sense approaches to situations, and no such thing as a loss of FACE since that is one of the major issues that creates a learning blockage.  Without loosing FACE as an issue students will start to open up and try even if they fail.  Pick them up, dust them off and send them forward to try again without the criticism FACE creates......

As usual, everything about "Education" in Thailand ends up as hot air.

Thailand wants indoctrination centers where kids will magically learn STEM.
But learning STEM requires effort on the part of the students and skill on part of the teachers.  At the end of the day, all they end up with is the same indoctrination centers that they have now with a lot of lip-service paid to actual learning.
 

The number one problem with education here will remain the number one problem .... corruption.

If they don't get rid of the always pass law, nothing will change... The kids are not stupid and know that they can't and never will fail...So they don't do anything except copying from the good students. and pass..Teachers indeed have a lot of work to do, administartion in books they have to write down every day with a pen who is absent or who is in school.. and also all the figures they gave them and for every subject the same... every subject 1 book......absent or present, figures, test results..... And when finished they have to write again in kids grade lists.. never heard of a computer for this whole waste of time and paper business?? 

In the classes 50 kids or more.. and in other schools mixed class because of not enough students.. Make classes not bigger than 25 kids and students should be obliged the nearest school to their home to choose.. It will not only solve  alot of traffic problems, but classes will be smaller and teachers can teach better and the kids , closer to theirhome will have more freetime to play and not for extra classes... Kids should not go to school at 6.30 and come home at 17.00 with home work to do. Near their house they can leave at 7.45 and be back at 16.00 ...... But as usual education system will never change in Thailand as when people start to think they see things they want to change and we have seen in the past years that demonstrations are not allowed....That are the students who are thinking and see and want to change

Will they be taught how to think or what to think?

Will they even be encouraged to think at all?

 

I hope so, but I worry....

'Shaping the Future' in Thailand means keeping the Sheeple dumbed down as much as possible in order that nothing changes at all; the Rich will continue to get richer and the Poor will get poorer, it's happening around us right now and unless the Sheeple get up and fight it will still be the same in 100 years time as Thailand moves further back into the Dark Ages whilst their Neighbours continue to move forward !

What is it with people using derogatory terms to describe individuals, Students are not Sheeple and neither is anyone else...

How about getting the kids to school first they have had 2 years off and they get more holidays than a rockstar

Prostration 101 is an elective now? Or Pass/Fail?

My 12 year old goes an extra hour  each day to help make up for all the lost time before?

And little concern of an overall curriculum and protocol that continues to promote a patronage system as well as a vacancy of instilling and encouraging independent and critical thought.......especially at the mid-to-higher levels. 

 

 

It's schooling and education - not rigid and subliminal militarism.

No stapling letters to children (like they feelingless soulless inanimate objects) might be a good place to start building a decent education system

I would love to see the bill the biy prt though is not the bill but policintit to make sure schools are doing it

Wow, good points and big assumptions.

Uneducated Thai teachers will never be able to educate Thai students.

 

The teachers here in Isaan at our local elementary school, none of them can speak 1 word of English.

It hasn't changed anything the past 30+ years.

 

Keeping the majority of the populice uneducated makes it easier to get away with corruption.

 

Aside from the Thai's with a college education that work in the cities, the rest of rural Thailand is uneducated as it can get.

 

My brother in law is a good example. Went to grade 4, dropped out of school to work in the fields. Cannot even read or write Thai.

You are critical of the Thai education system and you use an example of someone who dropped out of school ?

   All Children in Thai schools are taught how to read and write

I've written before about my Thai son. Here in Thailand he was going nowhere, achieving little in terms o gains in knowledge and skills. His experiences with Thai teachers was clear proof that the Thai education system, and the methodology was severely lacking.

 

He went to SInagpore to continue high school, after just 2 months he was a completely different kid; outgoing, keen and well capable of participation in advanced discussions re huan rights and more. The difference was amazing, all because of a different education system, different focus, very different methodology (pedagogy), very different teaching behaviors etc.

That's the policy, it doesn't mean it happens or is productive.

You wont regret it that's for sure, if your personal budgets are ok then that's the only way to go, I know from experience with my own daughter. Has cost me a relative fortune but worth every penny to her and to me.
