Devastating fire at Sattahip nightclub claims 13 lives, 20+ injured - multiple explosions heard

Thai Rath reported at 1 am this morning on a devastating fire in a nightclub in Sattahip, Chonburi, central/eastern Thailand that left 13 dead and around 20 severly injured.

 

A survivor reported seeing fire in a ceiling at Mountain B before multiple explosions were heard. Many died instantly and were consumed in the fire.

 

Others who managed to get out were left with horrific burns. A short circuit may have been responsible. 

 

Police captain Bunsong Yingyong was the first to respond along with Phlu Ta Luang police chief Pol Col Wuthipong Somjai and the acting district chief.

Twenty fire engines and firefighters and rescue services raced to the Mountain B club, a one story facility with a glass frontage on Sukhumvit -Bang Na - Trad Road. It is on three rai of land, reported Daily News.

 

Utter chaos greeted rescuers with around twenty people with horrific blisters and burns, screaming in agony who managed to escape the inferno.

 

13 injured men and 8 women were given first aid at the scene before being rushed to the Queen Sirikit Naval Hospital.

 

Thai Rath said that tackling the fire was complicated as it was fueled by sound absorbing insulation foam.

 

It took two hours before the blaze was brought under control. The authorities sealed off the building.

 

Inside thirteen charred bodies were found - 9 men and four women. Who they were is yet to be determined.

One survivor, a 51 year old man called Jiraphat Thuraphan said that the music was playing and people were dancing happily when a fire started in the ceiling.

 

Soon after there were many explosions one after another. Many died immediately in the explosions, he claimed, and would have been subsequently burned in the fire.

Others managed to flee in the confusion.

 

No cause for the fire has yet been established but it is believed to have been caused by a short circuit in the ceiling area.

Wasn't it the same situation in Phuket with that big club fire and the insulating foam which is highly flammable?

Ah yes the Tiger Club fire on Bangla, yes I forgot about that one.  In this one apparently the rear door was also locked according to this mornings Channel 32 news, which is a big issue as there was only one way in and out.

Only place I ever see fire sprinklers is in my condo, new house, and at the hospitals.

They are expensive to install here and budget is ALWAYS the primary consideration. 

 

I was not consulted as usual as they think they know best but one of my colleagues built a factory here with no sprinkler system when the type of building requires one to be fitted as per Thai law.

 

It is still operating and has passed all safety inspections thus far. ????‍♂️

You had the same thoughts as me.

 

By running they are providing more oxygen to the flames. The sense of panic makes it so difficult in the moment.

 

Within 150 metres of my place, there have been 3 large fires within the last 18 months, all with more than 10+ fire vehicles responding; one was an elementary school.

 

With such constant danger of fire because of such low standards and such slow response times of fire services, Thais must be all trained to stop, drop and roll. And heads must roll with reckless manslaughter charges.

Thirteen killed, over 30 injured, in fire at pub in Chon Buri province.

 

 

Thirteen people – 9 men and 4 women – died and more than 30 were injured in a blaze in a pub in Sattahip district of Thailand’s eastern coastal province of Chon Buri early this morning (Friday).

 

Rescue workers said that there were about 100 customers in the pub at the time of the fire, at about 1am, and most of the dead were found in the toilets and at the entrance to the Mountain B pub, adding that the entrance was also used as the exit.

 

Police, rescue workers and about 20 fire trucks rushed to the pub, which is located in a single-storey building on a half hectare plot on the Bang Na- Trat highway in Phlu Ta Luang sub-district.

 

A rescue worker said that it was difficult for the workers to enter the premises because there is only one way in and out, adding that there was a great deal of flammable material inside the venue.

 

It took fire fighters about an hour to bring the fire under control.

And then there are the sick people recording everything on their phones instead of trying to help those in need.

This horrific incident in the 90's shortly before I arrived in Pattaya.

Less than a kilometre from my house. 

 

Too many sad stories about young people and fires at party venues.

Saw the news and video on the Thai FB this morning. Utterly horrendous scenes.

Some of those people that managed to escape the explosions inside the club may later succumb to the burns they suffered on the way out..

Maybe, it might have been fortunate (if there is any positives here) that this fire didn't happen on a Friday or Saturday night, when it would have been a lot busier.
