Cat burglar electrocuted after climbing up outside of Sukhumvit Road hotel - anti-theft wire got him

Thai Rath reported that luck ran out for a cat burglar who was trying to steal from tourists staying at a hotel in Soi 5 on Sukhumvit Road in Bangkok.

 

Pol Lt Jaturawit Traisungnern went to the eight story hotel with a forensic team, Chula Hospital medics and Ruam Kantanyu rescue services. 

 

On the outside of the hotel - that wasn't named - they found Opas Saengjan, 34, from Klaeng, Rayong, stuck in a niche by a smoke extractor.

 

He was ten meters up from the ground and equipment was used to lower him down.

 

He was fully clothed and had sneakers on. He had burns on his right foot and had stepped on electrical anti-theft wires. 

 

He had 2,600 baht with him.

 

He was not a tourist and no one knew him.

 

The anti-theft device was turned on from 10 pm to 5 am the hotel told police.

 

One month ago a man had scaled the building and been chased by security guards but got away after stealing from a tourist.

 

Police said it was a clear case of a burglar being killed by an anti-theft device.

 

An autopsy was called for.

The law says you may take any measures to protect valuables on your property.

But maybe considered illegal (internationally) to connect 240v to an electric fence.

He wouldn't have got (gotten if one wants to give away one's nationality but that's a different thread) burns from a properly installed electric fence/window bars

Most countries have laws against live electrical burglar proofing wires....causing death would be a major crime!

back home I think you can only match the threat.   If nobody home, you can't hurt them at all.  no traps, nothing, because you are not in danger.

 

But in Thailand, you can probably have trap doors to the Alligator pit!!!   There should at least be a sign..............try to break in, you will die!!!!

220V can kill you it depends on the circumstances when you connect.

Possibly if it is not in a position that someone outside of your area could reasonably touch it and that you have clear signs posted informing the public that you have an electrified fence. Having said that you would need clear legal advice. I am only guessing on what I have said.

Are they running 220V though their "anti-theft wire" or any voltage capable of killing?  If so it's murder.
I'm not condoning the thief, but if I ran home voltage along the barbed wire at my home and someone got electrocuted?

In the years that I have lived here I've seen occasional news reports of arrest and prosecution for deploying 240vac for theft prevention. If the trespasser dies, it's manslaughter.

 

It's a cheap but heartless thing to do. For nearly 100 years the right solution is a simple device that raises the voltage but limits the current and sends it in pulses rather than the steady 50hz that freeze your muscles so that you can't let go.

 

As a teenager I lived on a farm that had some cattle grazing land defined by an ordinary fence where just the top wire was electrified. The source device was in a barn and you could hear a short buzz about once per second. 

 

Lazada has them on sale for less than 2,000 baht.

Thai farmers are known to protect their fields by running 220V wire around their fields to kill rats.

 

Occasionally these 220V wires get a person who doesn't know about the wire or isn't carefully enough.  A monetary compensation to the family and all is forgiven.

The burglar took the risk. There is no valid reason to climb that wall.

At least we can be sure he will never do it again. And maybe some other would-be burglars will learn from this - but I wouldn't bet on that.

 

Personally, I think a burglar should not be killed on purpose by a human. But that is not what happened here. I guess it's called bad risk assessment.

Might be worth a try. News would travel around the area quickly. One way to deal with desperados.

I am sure there has been reports of farmers ,using electricity to protect

their crops , fish ponds , and they have been brought up on charges , but

a hotel can maybe get away with it ....
