Queen Elizabeth II Passes Away Aged 96

BANGKOK (NNT) - Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-reigning monarch in British history and a symbol instantly recognized by billions of people worldwide, has died. She was 96.

Buckingham Palace issued a brief statement announcing her passing, prompting ten days of national mourning and a flood of tributes to her long life and record-breaking reign.

The palace announced, “the Queen passed away peacefully at Balmoral."

Charles, Prince of Wales, the eldest of her four children and the oldest heir apparent in British history, at age 73, immediately becomes king.

Two days earlier, the queen appointed Liz Truss as the 15th prime minister of her reign and was photographed smiling while using a walking stick and appearing feeble.

In 1952, at 25, Queen Elizabeth II ascended the throne in the aftermath of International War II, joining a world stage dominated by political figures such as Mao Zedong, Joseph Stalin, and Dwight D. Eisenhower.

She reigned as the leader of the Commonwealth, which comprises 56 nations and a fifth of the world’s population, and as the supreme administrator of the Church of England.

The last time the Queen visited Thailand was in 1996. She hosted King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great and Queen Sirikit the Queen Mother during their 1960 state visit to the United Kingdom.

One wonders if she hung on just long enough to see the country being passed into the hands of someone she felt capable of leading them out of the global mess as the new PM.  I respect the queen and hope that the others will respect the new monarch.  Will be interesting to see how big her funeral is.

Loved this comment…. Not for the political implication, but for the ascension beyond in using the overtly obvious in such unavoidably timely fashion and then doing so, so simply with a followed up RIP

  • She truly understood the  meaning of duty and quietly played that role throughout our lives, earning our love and respect consequently. I can't imagine the UK without her

Annigoni's stunning Wellingtonian portrait of the Queen was outside the headmistress's office when I was at primary school in the 60s. We filed past it every day into assembly. It is hard to explain but it meant something, then, and over all the decades since.

I am depressed at what this means for Britain. There's is now no antidote to the decay of the nation.

No mention, in this thread, of condolences from Thailand?

Anybody noticed any condolences in other Thai media?

Nothing other than the mention of the Thai flag being lowered to half mast. and this part:

He said that a government representative will be sent to sign the book of condolence at the British Embassy in Bangkok.

The Thai national flag at Government House is lowered to half-mast today (Friday), as Thailand expresses condolence for the passing of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II.

Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam said this morning that the flag is usually flown at half-mast for three days, to mourn the passing of the head of state of another country, and a member of the Thai Royal Family will attend the funeral.

He said that a government representative will be sent to sign the book of condolence at the British Embassy in Bangkok.

It really doesn't matter , its not  competition .

No one is required to do anything

It's not sad when an old person dies.

Mixed feeling about this, but not the place or time to talk about them.

RIP

I remember many of my Thai friends offering me condolences when Diana died, even strangers did. I'm sure it will be similar for the Queen.

Does William become the Prince of Wales?

  • Popular Post

The one good thing about the Royal family in the UK is that we can speak our mind, free speech and all that.

However, it is disrespectful to say anything negative when someone has just died.

I think he may, but it’s not automatically the case.

When my wife first visited the UK and we went to London, we were outside Buckingham Palace and the gates opened and HM was in the back of the vehicle, we were 3m from her, my wife got it on video, she never forgets this moment.

Nor do I.

Exactly the same story when my Thai wife and I visited years ago.

The queen drove out (slowly)...only a metre or two away. My wife also got it all on video.

What really amazed her was that HM car was preceded by ONE motorcycle cop, and that they gently merged into the traffic without any fanfare.

My wife just couldn't believe that the Queen could travel around so effortlessly knowing how things are done here.

Although he is heir to the throne, Prince William will not automatically become Prince of Wales - that will have to be conferred on him by his father. He has inherited his father's title of Duke of Cornwall - William and Kate are now titled Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and Cambridge.

RIP my dear Queen.

Remember words that my Queen once said " Grief is the price we pay for love ".

I feel truly grieved.

Yes indeed, Prince William (currently the Duke of Cambridge and the Duke of Cornwall on Charles becoming King) should become the Prince of Wales, being the eldest son of King Charles, but the final decision is with the King.

Before he passed away, Prince Philip asked Charles to confer the title of Duke of Edinburgh on Prince Edward (currently the Duke of Wessex and the King's youngest brother) on the death of their mother, Queen Elizabeth. This is another decision yet to be made by the King.

Prince Edward is the Earl of Wessex.

Prince Andrew is getting nuffin. He’s Duke of York, but because of his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein, he may have to give up the Dukedom. He has already lost the Freedom of the City of York

Final nail in the UK coffin?

End of the Era of peace?

After Brexit, economic collapse, and war in Europe, we're back to square one before she became Queen.

What a stupid, uninformed and needless comment. Be careful what you wish for because the UK has helped more countries that any other in history. Financial support through foreign aid and military support to name but two, both given freely at our own expense

A unique woman the like of whom we will never see again. Daily devotion to her peoples over an incredible 70 years. A truly lovely person.

As an Irishman I,  and the Irish, were wholeheartedly delighted with her visit to Ireland in 2011. A trip she specifically referred to as a trip she had very fond memories of. She was welcomed with genuine warm feelings and her constant smiles said it all.

RIP ER....

A Great woman, she seemed to go down hill rapidly after the death of her husband.

Hope they are reunited.

RIP Her Majesty.

Yes very true:

Quote:

“She simply adored him.

‘She never looked at anyone else,’ said her first cousin and close childhood friend, Margaret Rhodes, who died in 2016. ‘She was smitten from the start — a one-man woman.’

‘That famous first meeting came when Elizabeth was just 13 and on a visit with her parents to Dartmouth Naval College. While the King and Queen were taken on an official tour, Philip was the blond, handsome young cadet deputed to entertain her and her little sister, Princess Margaret.

‘He exuded a brash confidence that made her almost breathless. Years later, as Queen, it was his same certainty about everything that made her feel secure.“

And the crowds gasped at the sight of a double rainbow over Buckingham Palace after her death had been announced.. When was the last time you saw a double rainbow? So it must be the Queen and Prince Philip together again:
