Popular Post webfact Posted September 27, 2022 Popular Post Posted September 27, 2022 By Erich Parpart Thailand today announced that pregnant women who are between 12-20 weeks into their pregnancy could seek an abortion legally after having consulted with their doctors. The law goes into effect 30 days after it was officially announced in the Royal Gazette today, which means that the new law will come into effect from October 26 onwards. The landmark move to allow women to terminate their pregnancy comes as the many countries around the world such as the United States has gone the other way around to banning abortion after decades of having given a greenlight to the move. Popular Post peter zwart Posted September 27, 2022 Popular Post Posted September 27, 2022 And now we come to the point where America can learn from Thailand. Where America is dusting off 120-year-old laws, Thailand is making steps forward. The world is a funny place. 21 8 6

Popular Post TheFishman1 Posted September 27, 2022 Popular Post Posted September 27, 2022 Me think Thailand is doing this just for more medical tourism anyway they can make money they’ll do it it’s just all about money to them TIT 3 1

Popular Post alyx Posted September 27, 2022 Popular Post Posted September 27, 2022 At long last As for medical tourism, quite doubtful as abortion is not permitted in "only" three Asian countries: Iraq, Laos and the Philippines. Plenty of other countries to go to I guess 1 1 1
Popular Post josephbloggs Posted September 27, 2022 Popular Post Posted September 27, 2022 More liberal and progressive moves by the government. Thailand you are (pleasantly) surprising me! Keep it up........and may your next liberalisation be the removal of the 2pm-5pm alcohol ban. 8 1 4 1

Popular Post NorthernRyland Posted September 27, 2022 Popular Post Posted September 27, 2022 Why are the doing this now? The few Thai's I've spoken to about abortion are horrified by the idea and see it as a deranged thing to do. They won't even put their dogs down who have terminal cancer so why this push to abort fetus which are 5 months developed? I haven't seen polls but I seriously doubt this is popular. 3 2 1
ukrules Posted September 27, 2022 Posted September 27, 2022 Of all the things that have surprised me over the last year, this surprised me the most and I'm including the legalisation of cannabis in that. Many Thais won't be happy about this... 1

It needs to be approved by a doctor, sounds fair to me. Not something men should be complaining about. 2 1
Popular Post spidermike007 Posted September 27, 2022 Popular Post Posted September 27, 2022 I tend to support abortion, but I think there are few reasons why a woman cannot make up her mind to go in that direction, in the first trimester. However, overall this is a positive sign for Thailand. For a nation which is generally moving backwards, between this and cannabis legalization, this more or less proves that even dinosaurs are capable of making smart decisions, occasionally. 1 1 2
473geo Posted September 27, 2022 Posted September 27, 2022 Surely there has to be a medical reason to abort at 12 -20 weeks, hence the mention of a doctor The foetus is quite well formed by that stage

How long have you been in Thailand? Abortion here actually happens fairly often, I know multiple women who had one -- due to it being illegal at great personal risk to their health, as getting an abortion performed by a knowledgeable medical professional becomes even more of a lucky draw scenario than usual. For those who are against abortion, they would have to have been for reducing the main reason for it: namely the social inequality of girls in Thai society. We in the West overdo this in my opinion already in some instances, but in Thailand I have seen it happen so, so many times, that a girl had to change schools after getting pregnant, due to the shame, while the boy just went on with his previous life. 4

From the people I know they actually really cherish children and the thought of abortion just don't factor in. Sounds like a repeat of what happened in America. Parents let the kids run around and have sex as teenagers and then the obvious happens. I didn't think this happened so much in Thailand but maybe it's the same these days.
Popular Post Berkshire Posted September 27, 2022 Popular Post Posted September 27, 2022 Good job Thailand. Leave the choice to the women and their families. And a good lesson for my home country the USA....don't let your country be run by religious nutters. 4 1 2
Popular Post Purdey Posted September 27, 2022 Popular Post Posted September 27, 2022 Unmarried 14 year olds need a choice - that doesn't mean they don't want babies, but at the right time. I would prefer that contraception was easy to get without embarrassment but apparently Thai kids find it very embarrassing to go to a doctor or pharmacist. Teachers themselves are sometimes embarrassed to teach sex education. Many teens are raped by neighbors or family members. I guess this is a way out of a complicated problem. Let them have a way out. 3

Ah yes, forgot about that one. If they are in this kind of liberal mood let's get rid of the reporting entirely unless you change address.
