Pattaya, Thailand-Robert Beijer, 70, a suspect in an infamous cold case in Belgium known as the Brabant Killers or the Gang of Nivelles, was arrested in Pattaya this week for alleged legal visa issues allowing him to stay in Thailand.

 

Details from Thai police are scarce and local Thai media was not invited to the arrest and as of press time no interviews have been given by Thai officials involved in the matter.

 

The arrest, which has driven massive public interest on Belgium media, is not due to Mr. Beijer’s alleged issues with his visa in Thailand, where he has lived off and on for decades and was reportedly undertaking cancer treatment, but for his alleged involvement in Belgium’s infamous Brabant Killers Cold Case.


Beijer, also known as Bob, a former state police officer, had previously been convicted for fourteen years for murder and robbery in cases unrelated to the Brabant Killers, and after getting early release for good behavior had been largely living in Thailand since 1999. It was not immediately clear what his exact visa issue was or where he was being detained.

I don't know about different visa types or what type of visa this guy has but for the Thailand Elite visa they are quite specific on the application forms - if you've been sentenced to more than 1 year in prison for any crime other than negligence then you're not permitted to get the visa.

 

I guess if you've been sentenced to less than 1 year in prison at any point in the past then it's no problem.

 

However, there is no way they can check this as they don't require a 'police report' so you just sign the form which I guess is a legal declaration - I imagine if they later found out you had indeed done a decade or so in prison then they might kick you out and revoke the visa.

 

I wonder if something similar happened here.

 

Is there any similar kind of declaration for retirement or other types of visa?

This is no secret those international criminals and fugitive from justice making Thailand their home hideaway,

reading the Israeli newspapers recently where an arch mafioso has talked about his plans to re-locate to Thailand to escape the local police hounding him daily making his life impossible to live, and where he goes, his dozen or so 'soldiers' will follow, and where do you think they will all settle huh?...

I guess if I were looking for any criminal, from any country, I'd start my search in Thailand.

 

Thailand must be the number one choice in the various guidebooks for multi-national criminal figures.

This is the special atmosphere here in Pattaya. Where else can you enjoy your beer between so many whores and criminals. But one essential group is still missing - the gamblers. Pattaya needs casinos otherwise something will be missing here.

Apparently Thai police arrested him for visa related issues and transferred him to Bangkok, an unforeseen consequence of the visit to his Pattaya home by a Belgian judiciary delegation.

A good long, if a little bit dry read but it seems that this chap had previously been arrested by Thai police and deported but was back here full-time only 8 years later.
