It was always 3 Baht, as that was the cost on the songthaew at the time when this was fashionable. No mystery, it was simply a way of keeping their bus fare.

It used to entertain me... I’d joke about it with other Thai’s and they’d laugh about it it too....    5 Baht in the ear, Pack of Cigarettes under their t-shirt on their shoulder, ya-dom up

Um... man has 1 place...lady has 2... can you guess

First I thought of a purse. Then a pocket.

But now I reckon 'money-box'

Sounds like a recipe for an ear infection, considering how dirty money is.

They didn't have pockets

5 Baht in the ear, Pack of Cigarettes under their t-shirt on their shoulder, ya-dom up a nostril, woman’s hair-band holding the hair back, t-shirt hitched up exposing the belly to cool down !!!

Sounds like a quality tourist ????

It’s for that rice farmer who wants to say “I can’t afford a gold chain, but I’m saving up for one.”

It was to pay for a ride on a baht bus (5 baht for Thais). Used to be quite common in Pattaya to see girls (and some guys) with a coin in their ear but like many other fads and fashions, it faded away over time.

It's a no brainer.

They like the sound of money.

Ok so whats with the binder clip the uni girls wear on their belts?

Good question, never been able to work that one out.

The uni skirts generally don't have belt loops.  The belts aren't really functional, they just sit at the top of the skirts.  The clips keep the ends in place.

I'm sure it's because bank interest rates are so poor these days.

I have heard of fish in the ears but they were herring aids!

Years ago I saw younger guys with 10-baht coins in their ear. (Probably easier to keep it there than 6 baht 50...)

The skirts don’t have belt loops on them like jeans etc.

That's what I was once told by a songtaew owner.

Its because you can hear the sound of brown envelopes rustling

"Thai guys with coins in their ear, what's the meaning?"

They have always been told "Money Talks" in Thailand

So can we blame them to trying to hear?
