Sorry I am still unclear.

"Endo" can be either colonoscopy or gastroscopy...both of these things are endoscopies.

Are you now saying you do not have a clear colonoscopy result showing colon cancer, but do now have a gastroscopy result showing gastric cancer?

Prof. Chucheep is a colorectal specialist so it makes quite some difference.

  • @Tiber   No reason to think there would be "long waiting" in Thailand. In a private hospital, immediate treatment. In government, a bit slower but not excessively so....especially if you can

  • P.S. BCH is a noprofit hospital and cost of scans there, while certainly more than India, might not be that much more when you figure in airfare etc. And you could probably get it all done on same day

  • The evidence is 'yours truly', who returned to the UK in early February for prostate cancer diagnosis/investigation and received prompt and free treatment on the NHS.  I explained that I had recently

Plus it isn't a free service once you're out of the system, I believe expats are charged 3 times the cost of a residing Brits cost to the NHS and they want it in advance.

if I was in this position and I could get to the UK, at the worst you could just walk into a doctor surgery all dishevelled and say you’ve been living on the streets for 20 years and you can’t remember your name or whatever. I wouldn’t be going incriminating myself. Which doctors surgery goes investigating where a new patient with no last doctor has been residing. Imagine two patients arrive on the same day. One is homeless crack addict never paid in to the systems and then Tiber. It’s all the same.

That Kev In Thailand based his demise on what he heard from someone and eventually ended up in a hospice in the UK anyway if I remember correctly Free of Charge.

My own dad after spending his whole life from 50 onwards. On retirement in Thailand at 70 he had he had the inevitable predictable heart attack which requires a stent and Bangkok Hospital to be paid 1.5M. After the inevitable rip off by his missus now Dads back in Blighters in one room and just his pension. Mind you like he said “ luckily Thailand holds £20k of you money ready so you have something pocket money to go back home with ????

If your intent on going to all lengths to beat this Tiber just turn up to a doctors in the UK and act like Manuel from Fawlty towers.

It would be nice to clarify how likely it is that expats can be denied free treatment with evidence.

The evidence is 'yours truly', who returned to the UK in early February for prostate cancer diagnosis/investigation and received prompt and free treatment on the NHS.  I explained that I had recently returned from living in south-east Asia for 21 years, but at no time was I ever asked for proof of UK residency (eg UK bank account, electoral register etc).

To my understanding all you need to do is declare an intention to remain. No specific proofs required.

Loudly proclaiming that your home/wife etc  is in Thailand  (as some have done) will, on the other hand, cause a problem.

And let's face it, Simon, if it had turned out you did have cancer might have stayed in the UK. For a good while, at least.

Absolutely. Had my prostate biopsy found cancer cells, the next step would have been referral to Preston NHS Hospital for surgery or radiation treatment. I would certainly still be in the UK until at least the Autumn.

I'm just repeating the NHS's own rules. I know an expat who had dental treatment in the UK and was allergic to the injection, he went into a coma for 3 months and had to learn to walk again, he was given a bill for 200 K pounds but was told they would credit him this if he could prove he had come back to the UK permanently. He rented a cheap flat for 6 months, saved all the utility bill slips and put himself on the voting registry. After presenting the evidence he didn't have to pay and left for Thailand again. For those who say he should have just scarpered, that is fraud and will be prosecuted. I know a Swiss gentleman who left a load of unpaid bills in Zurich, when his time came to renew his passport at the embassy he was refused but was given an emergency passport for one trip back to Zurich. Beating the system isn't easy but you can get lucky.

One thing I have noticed in the last few weeks is there are a lot more threads about health, especially for older posters.

IMHO this is a good thing as many of us are spread across Thailand, without close farang neighbours to talk to about stuff like this.

Although, touch wood I have managed to miss cancer so far, I have had other medical problems. Through the Health Forum  threads I have learnt of other people with similar problems and learned about different treatments, where to go for advice etc.

It is good to see, share and learn from other posters and learn that we are not alone with our problems.

Having read this thread I realise that whilst my problems seemed large to me at the time, compared to others they are only small in reality.

One thing I hope is that this thread and others like it don't get hijacked and trashed.

Cock up start, not quite finish tho.  Started as trip to Goa as covid restrictions finished    ....wot a dump.. but wanted info on knee transplant, all good half price to Thai, eyes /heart tested, then 34 buck endoscopies in local hospital, both ends.      Results led to believe something amiss, but where, the doc lumped them together, but a massive heads up something wrong

Received more info to ignore as so small, went back, this time Calcutta for more testing at 34 bucks per endo, plus 7000 fight cost, more detailed indeed took pace, finally received resuly stomach cancer.

Went to Bangkok Christian hospital couple of times, had talk with head man, then flight to UK  ,checked into NHS   fast tracked, this is going to cost NHS few bob         cut off soon at local library

Early stage cancer ,but treatable but but major op ,PIP awarded money offered NHS full package accomodation too,so it goes on  Thank You

34 dollars for colonoscopies and endoscopies ? don't think I would have gone to India even at those prices. Good to hear you got sorted in the end.

Not to mention the garbled results he got which sent him on a wild goose chase  consulting with a colorectal specialist when it turned out he did nto have colon cancer at all,  but apparently now stomach cancer. The aggregate cost of all the unnecessary trips/consults may exceed what it would have cost to have had these done in Thailand to begin with.

People but too much emphasis on the tests themselves and their cost, too little on the reliability of results and interpretation.

I trust NHS is repeating the endoscopies or doing other scans? Since the reports you have had on the endoscopy results  from India seem sketchy and contradictory.

No idea what "PIP" is???

Its standard for the NHS to repeat and confirm results obtained elsewhere. If there is any suspicion of cancer he will be put on a Two Week Wait (TWW) pathway and seen by consultant within two weeks.

I think PIP will be Personal Independence Payment - government money to support living/homecare costs of someone suffering major illness.

He went to India and found out he had stomach cancer, if he hadn't gone he probably wouldn't have found out as avoided the higher costs of tests and treatment in Thailand

He went to India and was first, incorrectly, told he colon cancer which led to travel and consultations in Thailand he turned out not to need.

How on earth stomach cancer got diagnosed as colon cancer is beyond me.

..and so I did. I did not venture to Goa ,other than change of scenary, and get a few medical tests done.Been many times ,for specific reason of endoscopies, all OK,fact the one before this resulted in 5 pages of documented pages ,but no cancer  latest it was lax,but never in million years expected the outcome, first had it,then did not, then I did

Landed in UK within hours with GP,within days endo/blood testing  MRI CT with contrast, followed by more endos,to estimate the approach...the operation, weeks in hospital more likely. Had sedation, hated the spray in mouth, but kept in hospital overnight, private room too

Refused £350 grant from McMilian (sp) cancer org. as charity but told to accept any other offerings, yes PIP  £92 a week tax free, then total NHS care package being offered, accomodation too.

Did enquire as to op in Thailand,2 million and more at least, might have had it in India ,I guess  far far cheaper, but needed wife to help

There was only one trip to India other than Goa I made, but was OK,best place to be for testing,at least ,at very least this has increased my lifespan,if not tested and cancer had rattled on for 2 or more years, too late. Who knows what lies beneath (the skin).  The poster putting up deep brain stimulation,or the snot poster, want to try the various clinics, hundreds of them for specifics,....the clinic in India still call me up for progress

And yes,I have been asked about whereabouts,  Q  have you lived in UK longer than 12 months, they know I live abroad, but nothing asked and Ive been evasive

Weather here really good,food/fantastic, peppered salmon ,followed by  3 punnets of raspberries every breakfast

Thank You Sheryl.
