Stranded in Thailand: Bankrupt foreign woman unable to return home

The $10k story is so she can ask to borrow like $1k and promise to pay back at a very high interest rate.

Sounds like the local Thais bought her story. Hopefully they didn’t advance her any money.

Reminds me of a certain large-legged person who received lots of donations and ended up partying it away on Patpong with no shame whatsoever.

He said the woman bought cannabis from his shop and urged him to share her story

She had money to buy cannabis?

Her sister transferred US$10,000 to her but she says can not withdraw the funds.

Why not?

Scammer - this is a lie - sister could just as easily buy her a ticket ! And far cheaper too than 10,000 dollars

One wonders why she can't get to the funds??

A proper reporter would have asked, but asking questions is not encouraged in Thailand, is it. A bit of a handicap for a reporter.

Maybe she can get herself deported for being unable to support herself financially and what about her return flight she must have had one to enter

What? You mean the cheap, non-endorseable, non-refundable and long-expired return ticket she didn't because of the high times she was enjoying under Thailand's ill-forged marijuana legalization?

she can wait till she get deported...she will stay in a cell for a while then get a free ticket home....problem solved....and she will be off drugs too

Incorrect, the deportee pays for the police escort to the airport AND the flight. That is why there are so many longstayers in IDC, they can not afford the flight or escort.

The reporter, Mr Chat Geepeetee, is highly regarded by himself.

Jail her then see how fast she can sort her affairs. Beggars are pests.

Fair point.... no mention of her Permission of Stay status....

If she can show evidence of the $10,000 transfer, her plight could be genuine. Otherwise, it could be a scam.

I would have thought her most obvious get-out card would be to contact the US embassy.

The mission of the embassy does NOT include repatriating a citizen if in fact that part of this story is true.

I think you are absolutely accurate on what is published in the name of journalism today because it's not. It's just media. Very little if any investigation and no follow up. Just copy and paste and regurgitate without fact checking or verification.

Yes, the US has a loan program tied to passports and she could easily easily get back to the US.

If the sisters transfer isn't accessable (doubtful) the sister could just reverse it and buy a plane ticket

But would she not have to get to BKK US embassy or do they have a consulate in Krabi ?

The “Stranded Foreigner without money” stories are getting to be a regular occurrence.  This causes people to become skeptical.  This person’s story could be true but how many stories like this are printed on a regular basis.

So why would she ask a cannabis staffer to upload her plight on social network?

Go to the USA embassy and seek advice.

Not sure why you'd describe yourself as a ''lowly teacher'' . All the teachers I meet have well paid jobs and enough spare cash to party on holidays, until its time to head back to their home country. . back to on topic: the root problem, as always, is it is often impossible to comment intelligently, due to lazy reporting of the facts,  in the most of the Thai media. then again, ignorance is bliss ????

Probably her passport is expired. Many foreigners are overstaying in Thailand for 10-15 years keeping low profile and never being caught. Some of them are criminals and fugitives not willing to return to their home country for various reasons.

yep - do the numbers - she came here as a 5 year old fugitive. ????

The US Embassy does not give advice to Americans who are out of money.  They only offer a loan to get back to the US.  They will not offer sympathy or empathy.  Can you imagine how of these stories the US Embassy has heard over the years?  Also, she probably does not have internet access.

If her passport is invalid for some reason she probably can't use it to withdraw funds if of course the story is legit

I am not a US citizen; however, I was under the impression from previous threads the US loans the cost of the airfare ( coach, obviously ) to get stranded travellers back home.
