To demonstrate that the law is equally applied to all, the Red Bull heir would be languishing now in a Thai jail. Thais are not particularly concerned and never have been at what appearances may suggest about the justice system. 2

He might have convinced many people to do this and that and he thought that he covered 100% of his way out of prison. And maybe he will come out soon. But sometimes you think you have to think about 100 things, but in reality you had to think about 101 things. And then at some time you find out that little thing, which you didn't think about, makes your life difficult. That could happen. I guess it is not likely, but it's not impossible that he will stay a little longer in jail. 17 years of freedom jet-setting around the world in the lap of luxury... He didn't come back to stay in jail, to have the grandchildren come and visit him behind bars.. They could have flown around the world to visit him anytime anywhere. He's done a deal and it's already started to play out 2

That , definitely , is not helping Thaksin's case . The Pheu Thai betrayal ( it's concessions to the military dominated parties ) , led to a decline of about 60% of the voter's confidence in the party . And now , if the people who voted for them , feel that all this what happened was already set up before , the " public opinion " might become unfavorable to Thaksin's release . In this case a ' royal pardon ' would not be a popular decision , and could lead to more problems ... Thaksins return story made the news in many countries , and the outcome of it is decisive of how Thailand will be regarded by the rest of the world . ( Reputation already damaged anyway ) That is a ' slippery slope ' and the decision to grant a ' royal pardon to Thaksin may implicate far reaching consequences ...

Scouse123
In the murky world of Thai politics there is time yet for things to unravel for Thaksin. I think a lot of the support and fan-base has dwindled. Pheu Thai has betrayed its followers and they are not the all powerful party that they were before,Their power is greatly diluted and they are in a large coalition, many of who do not like Thaksin. He is now in the clutches of the establishment and has been sentenced by the Supreme Court. He could have made a huge mistake with his calculated risk of returning. Only time will tell, but it may not be the foregone conclusion everybody is expecting. He's played his cards and is now in Thai custody. However, I do think that in Thailand just like any country in the world the people will get bored or " full up of Thaksin's circus " with the whole affair and lose interest. Then it will drop out of the news or at least be deemed not as newsworthy. As a footnote, every prisoner has the right to seek a King's Royal pardon. It usually takes years and years and travels painstakingly slow as it progresses through the system. Of course, it will be short circuited by a man of his power, money and means to get this matter dealt with a lot quicker than the average Joe.

From a party which campaigned on a platform of hugely extending the scope and use of the lese majeste laws, and absolutely no constitutional reform. A party which was founded to oppose the student demonstrations of the last couple of years, demands the "closure of spaces" at university campuses for any demonstrators, or groups which it considers as progressive or subversive ( defined by them); a party which further demands that foreign countries extradite any critics of the Thai government. A party with a mass membership of some 13,000 and which failed to win any seats in the general election! Unless they are in turn double crossed. The clever bar stewards knew that Pheu Thai's massive support guaranteed big problems if Thaksin remained in prison. However they may have calculated that by subsuming Pheu Thai into the establishment they have significantly reduced that support base - they probably have; however that doesn't necessarily mean that popular support for Thaksin as an individual has been similarly removed. It is worth noting that his daughter, who was let us face it the lead campaigner and "pin up" for the campaign has no place in the government they are forming. He will be pardon in a few months just when when a bigger event comes along public be so tired just don't care any longer. Leaders will do it regardless knowing people wishes are secondary the election result is the best example. This will just drag on and on he will be in home detention free to come and go within the country until he dies. ????

They are petitioning the corrections department to not forward a request for a royal pardon if one came along. To decide which requests to forward is part of the official role of the corrections department. But that's not at all the case. There are many possible requests for the Kings consent, pardons are just one of them. But in pretty much all cases there are lower parts of the system which are supposed to filter those requests before they reach the King. Otherwise there'd probably be an insurmountable amount of requests to consider. Similarily how you have to go through several layers of courts before being able to appeal a case to the Supreme Court. That doesn't mean a lower court gets to decide for the Supreme Court. The Privvy Council make these decisions and The King historically has followed their advice. How many protestor are being falsely accused of section 112 and did not get a pardon at all.. or even the hunger strikers last year.. they were ignored by the media and nobody could comment.. and a criminal can get what he want???? Shameful Thailand "...............and suddenly in Thailand he gets sick." It was reported quite some time ago that he was sick - all part of the plan - he didn't look particularly ill when he landed at DM airport! If I remember correctly, he said he wanted to come back to Thailand to look after his grandchildren. How is he supposed to do that from inside a jail cell? Meanwhile, on the other side of the coin:- "a criminal Army general can get what he want????" Yes, by taking the country by force in a coup and getting rid of the Democratically elected Government, installing himself as PM, and illegally altering the Constitution in favour of himself by installing 250 unelected Army Generals as Senators, in order that the future is "looked after"! Not often a Thai is "pro active"! "Shameful Thailand!" Edited August 29, 2023 by sambum

You're comparing apples and oranges - the Red Bull heir has never been tried and convicted, Thaksin has. The statute of limitations only applies to how long prosecutors have to bring a case against the accused, there is no statute of limitations once you have been convicted. p.s. yes, both should be in jail.
