Thailand To Urge Germany To Provide Engine For Chinese Sub Purchased By Thai Navy

THAILAND PLANS to call on Germany to provide a German-made engine for a Chinese-built submarine already purchased by the Thai navy, Defence Minister Suthin Khlangsaeng confirmed today (Sep.7).

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and Deputy Prime Minister-cum-Foreign Minister Panpree Pahitthanukorn will likely call on the German government to allow the sale of the German-made MTU396 engine for the Yuan-class S26T submarine being built by China Shipbuilding & Offshore International Co. in a planned meeting with their German counterparts during the United Nations General Assembly session in New York later this month, Suthin said.

Relationships between Thailand and Germany and with China would remain intact if the Germans eventually agreed to sell the sought-after engine for use with the Chinese sub by the Thai navy, according to the civilian defence minister.

Nevertheless, Thailand’s first Chinese-built S26T sub is not expected for delivery until after next year, given snags in the procurement of the MTU396 engine which was among German military hardware and equipment on which a sustained embargo is imposed for sale to Asia’s superpower.

I worked in ship building in Australia, we built frigates for both the Aust and NZ navies. The first few were German designed by Blohm and Voss in Hamburg. The rest were US designed by Todd Shipyards in Seattle. The German design was so much better than the US design. Of course Australia fell for the US  crap citing cost etc and paid the consequences. Thailand would be better advised to invest in more appropiate vessels for Thai conditions, such as patrol boats etc detecting anything illegal from getting into Thailand.

Germany is trying to avoid their product being copied by the copy cats… Thailand should tell China never mind we don’t want that sub….

With the Chinese motor running that sub they should’ve canceled the order. Oh I forgot. The big boys have already received their payment and advancing it probably offshore TIT.

How about an MG motor, many of their cars are very popular around the world, but be it as it may, the better have a spare sup just in case one will get lost.

The German engine has an impressive record for reliability and longevity. It will far outlast the life of the sub. I predict problems with leaks, corrosion and system glitches. Finally, a submarine is expected to be a weapon of stealth. How can that be achievable if it is produced by one's adversary?

Wonder at what point NATO may think this is a bad idea ????

Come on Thailand, chose between us or China before you go crying for our know how. But it might be an uphill battle to rid you of this "have it both ways" culture.

Why not just Yamaha and put a coupler 150 outbourds on it,,, if its made in China it's already a piece of sh+t

  • Popular Post

So, the clowns in charge of the country want Germany to supply them with engines for Chinese submarines after agreeing to have joint military exercises with China - good luck with that one. Basically potentially supplying a Chinese ally with armaments ! If I was Germany I'd tell them to get stuffed unless they change their alliances !

  • Popular Post

Buy it with the chinese engine ( I think they already agreed on this ...? ) .

Wait for that it will be delivered , organize a big inauguration ceremony , put the thai flag on it , play the national anthem when it is launched , and see it going down , and down , and not coming up anymore ....

Thailand's soft power in action.

Germans have no scruples. They will do it for enough money. Personally, I would write off the stupid sub, and give the money you would have spent tin the engine and running costs to poor people.

  • Popular Post

And the Chinese will insist on the blueprints for the engines so they can copy them.

New government to Military: See! We're trying.

Germany: You've gotta be joking!

New government to Military: Oh dear! No go, I'm afraid. We'll just have to cancel the sub.

The answer to that is

A long time ago

It is my belief that there is an EU wide ban on any EU Countries supplying to China any kind of Materials, Machinery Etc Etc for the purpose of manufacturing Military Equipment of any kind

As this Submarine is being built in China, it will fall within that remit, whether its for Chinas use or anybody elses use

They paid China 37 Billion Baht for a Frigate, that is a Submarine support vehicle too!
