Speaking in New York, Thailand’s Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said that his government will amend the law on cannabis, to restrict its use to medical purposes and to control retail cannabis outlets, within six months.

During his interview with Bloomberg, the prime minister said that, since cannabis was decriminalised in Thailand last year, by removing it from the Category 5 drugs list, it has become the first country in Asia where cannabis is available for medical as well as recreational purposes, resulting in the rapid growth of retail outlets offering cannabis and its extracts over the counter.

He claimed that there is broad agreement among the 11 coalition parties that the use of cannabis and its extracts must be restricted to medical use.

Decriminalisation of cannabis and its extracts is the flagship policy of the Bhumjaithai party, the second largest party in the coalition during the election campaign.

Meanwhile, Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew said today (Thursday) that the Bhumjaithai party can resubmit its Cannabis Bill to parliament for consideration.

And the country's leading legislative "pot-head" as the former Public Health minister now lately having become the new Interior Minister.

He plans to do something within 6 months and already knows what that is but refuses to share this information with the public. What a sleaze.

"the use of cannabis and its extracts must be restricted to medical use" Think this will speak for itself.

"control retail businesses" Most likely you need a license and could lose it when selling for non-medical use.

Anutin made his position clear earlier in an interview with CNN.

Very difficult on police to go find cat in jungle and get back in cage.  Also young people always crave what’s forbidden.

Thai people don't seem to crave it much. Chiang Mai is chock full of outlets, with no apparent customers. I only smelled it while walking thru the foreign guesthouse ghetto and a certain dance

club zone.

They could start like California did. With the quack doctor giving medical cards to all comers "I feel stress, can't sleep, no appetite"

Here you go. Try some OG diesel Gorilla glue you will never get off your couch again and Domino's delivers to 2AM.

So exactly how can you have it restricted as medicinal use only and have retails outlets or online sellers.?

Bazaar world a guy that steals millions gets convicted comes back goes directly to a Hospital suite after a few hours and now he wants him to be part of the government. His sister, who is on your guard, leaves the country, the Red Bull kid who has all this time they have never issued a red notice, a heroin trafficker convicted is in government here so this is why I say Thailand is bizarre world  TIT

Require a prescription from a MD or a medical use card for purchase like certain jurisdictions do ? ????‍♂️

Strange that he drops this policy change when outside of Thailand, in English with an English language media outlet?

Why not communicate directly to Thai citizens first?

Anyway, I don't understand why he doesn't just relist Cannabis flower on the Narcotics list TODAY, with the stroke of a pen? That's how it was de-criminalized on 9 June 2022. The exact same process could be used TODAY, not in six months, to re-criminalize it.

Pharmaceuticals are on the Narcotics List, and are illegal to possess, sell and consume unless prescribed and dispensed at controlled pharmacies. Their legal distribution is tightly controlled.

Cannabis was already LEGAL for medical purposes ~ 2017-ish.

I think the PM is uninformed on this, and many other topics, he's more a of a talker than a doer. It would be nice if he could articulate a real plan.

Easy,  sell it through pharmacies who would require a  prescription from a medical  practitioner. Set standards for labs producing the  extract and enforce.

This has already been done. In 2017 no less.

BTW, foreigners, save those few who have access to the Thai Social Safety Net, would not be eligible.

So this is a good thing? Right?

No one is buying it, so no one is smoking it.

Rejoice.

Consuming cannabis in public where it causes an annoyance is ILLEGAL today.

I bet that the "reform" will look something like this:  He will restrict the licensing of retail shops so that only outlets owned by Boonrawd and ThaiBev can sell cannabis retail!

A lot of people are going to be unhappy with that

So the weed only shops would become illegal.
