Biden stuns allies with border wall bombshell

President Biden’s decision this week to move forward with border wall construction that Democrats have long denounced shocked allies and immigration advocates.

The stunning reversal came just days after administration officials participated in an immigration roundtable at the Capitol featuring Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) members and immigration advocates.

 

The administration’s participation in the roundtable drew praise from CHC members; administration officials did not mention plans to restart border wall construction.

CHC leaders called the decision “disappointing” Thursday.

“While this border wall funding was signed into law by President Trump under Republican leadership, this decision is not in line with the current Administration’s commitments to end border wall construction. Republicans remain committed to building border walls that are ineffective, a poor use of taxpayer funds, and a strain on the local environment, endangering families and children who are fleeing from dangerous conditions and that seek legal asylum in the United States,” CHC Chairwoman Nanette Díaz Barragán (D-Calif.) said in a statement.

A notice posted on the Federal Register on Wednesday waived a series of environmental and historical protection laws to allow for wall construction in Starr County, Texas, using funds appropriated in 2019 for that purpose.

Biden told reporters Thursday that his administration moved forward with the waivers and construction to comply with a legal obligation to use the appropriated funds.

“One question on the border wall: The border wall, money was appropriated for the border wall. I tried to get them to reappropriate, to redirect that money. They didn’t. They wouldn’t,” Biden told reporters in the Oval Office.

Who are "they" ?

Biden said he tried to get lawmakers to redirect the money but Congress refused, and the law requires funding to be used as approved and the construction to be completed in 2023. Oct. 6, 2023 https://apnews.com

As "Congress" includes a Republican controlled House, Biden couldn't redirect the funds.

 

Unlike POTUS Trump who in 2020 diverted $3.8 billion in Pentagon funding to build his border wall without Congressional approval, albeit the Trump's Secretary of Defense, Secretary of Homeland Security and Ranking Member (aka majority leadership ) on the House Committee on Appropriations championed Trump's decision. So it would appear that the current Republican majority-held House alone could have blocked Biden's request for redirection? And in the middle of a possible government shutdown if Biden couldn't get at least a temporary short-term budget from House Speaker McCarthy?

BUT to keep to his political word on 'no more wall,' couldn't Biden have simply let the funds EXPIRE as unused by year-end?

imagine asking your fellow citizens suffering with unemployment, inflation. skyrocketing fuel costs, rising crime, food prices and debt to now pay for anyone who wants to cross the border and be paid for. Imagine importing crime, imagine allowing the already catastrophic illegal immigrant figures to skyrocket. The number of refugees crossing is dwarfed by those just looking to enter the country for easy money. If they had something rewarding to contribute they’d contribute it to their own economy.

 

Woke people should set up an “adopt a migrant scheme” and get their wallets out to move illegal immigrants into the house next door if they want them so much!!!!

It’s not only about money; it also has to do with politics. Dysfunctional congress is inhibiting sensible legislations to be passed. The Citizens Act of 2021 has some sensible proposal including having designated processing centers in Central

America which can alleviate the human tragedies. Proposed in 2021 and never got passed and forgotten by the current House. Sad state of affairs held hostage by politics played in the House at the expense of suffering people who just want a better life.

They were talking about this on Bill Maher today. I have always felt that the approach to immigration by democrats is a bit strange and too liberal. Definitely out of step with most people's thoughts and it hurts their chances of success in 2024. I don't think it's cruel by definition to have decent borders but it is complicated. 

As an aside I am wondering how other posters feel about the writer's strike being over. I have kept out of politics for a while but watching Kimmel, Colbert, and Maher along with actual news programs has got be a bit interested. But sometimes I think best not to bother, losing 30 minutes or more out of my day, and let politics do it's thing.
