In this thread I've noticed many comments about people being banned.

I'm aware that 1 or 2 members were banned (over many years) for strong rudeness / insulting comments, for I wasn't aware that it was large numbers. Comments welcome.

People are using banned when they mean they were suspended. 10 suspensions before you are banned, if banned you cannot post again.

Totally agree! It has been highjacked by a hard core of approx. 12 idiots/Bots/paid for posters who may be increasing the "click count" but are ruining the site!

  • The fun has been lost.   We used to have fun posts about sightings of Michelin men and Mountain Dew and the like.   Now almost every post degrades into pages of off topic bickering

My 2 cents.

Site went 'woke' some years ago.

That chased the Right-leaning crowd away.

The other reason is the grim-reaper.😄

Plus..I don't see a lot of younger blood settling here..plenty of competition from elsewhere

Often comments are made without the intention of being rude, but non the less are rude and need to be corrected. Again that's where moderators come in

Not perfect but nessacery IMO

The forum goes the way of Thailand, maybe it is time to question whether we want/can stay here?

I wonder what my count is at?  I think I was banned once for stating the Covid "might" have originated in a lab at the beginning of the Covid era.  Think I deserve 11.

When a poster is banned they simply wait a short time and then register under a different name, some people have done that repeatedly for years.

Here's an idea why not attract Thai posters (like Yinn!) have a section for wife's and girl friends, even bar girls. Could even be just for Thais in Thai language. That dreadful forum Thailand-uk did something like that.

Hence the pointlessness of banning

Also another point that i failed to make.

You said that we are not perfect. then why should we expect the moderators to be prefect? They are human also.

and finally, you disagreed  above  without desagreable. Why can't everyone do the same

One of us has blinders on (me?) and is only capable of seeing what fits their story.  I see that you feel moderation is beneficial and I disagree minus only rare exceptions.  This is a civil conversation and I'm open to you being correct.  If you start throwing insults at me, I can choose to ignore or respond.  I don't need protection from insults and in most cases the offensive insulter is exposed to be a fool.  I know because I've been that fool in the past.   I, on many occasions have admitted wrong and don't need anyone to moderate my opinions.

People have to get over themselves and get on with living with people that might be offensive.

You might not realise that the moderators are not there only to protect you. they also need to protect the forum.

First there are some subjects that are illegal and inappropriate to post and as such  need to be moderated.

Second , you might not mind insults, but many , including me do, and as such , if it was allowed namy posters will simply not participate. This is how many other Thai based forums only have a very low number of members participating.

A contributary factor for old names disappearing might be because they have disappeared from Thailand and no longer have any interest in the place. I used to know several people who no longer live in or visit Thailand. It's a lawless place and eventually grinds many people down. An example is an Australian friend I had here. His place was broken into and much stuff stolen, including his SUV as they found the keys. At the same time, the 'security guard' to the housing complex disappeared, giving a clue who might be involved. But the police refused to do anything unless he paid them 100,000 baht. He left to go back to Australia and his wife was only too glad to go with him.

Add in the daily reports of murders and death by driving and scams and corruption, and those I know, all bar one, decided there were better places to be. So no wonder they no longer visit AN.

I'm not asking the moderators to be perfect.  I know they are as imperfect as the rest of us.  I'm saying we don't need moderators 99.9% of the time.  learning how to communicate with others should be an individual journey and not taught by moderators.  As far as I know moderators aren't any more intelligent or socially in the know than the rest of us.  They are good people but IMO need to let disagreements play out.  Sometimes it will end badly but life isn't perfect.

The rules have changed massively since I last looked, they are now much more concise and appropriate. Previously, the rules came a cross as a legal contract, pages of the damned things.

What a load of tosh,  other forums have tried your formula and failed miserably...🥴

Plus, if you want to class 'all' as being dim, then perhaps you should just speak for yourself......

It seems to me that many long-term members are not here anymore.

And some (new) members try to beat each other about how many useless posts they can publish in a day.

Is that it? Is this the death of this forum? Is there any hope that it will get better again?

I've also have noted the same as yourself. All of a sudden a bunch of new "Ops" have come out of the woodwork and have started posting droll jibber-jabber and utterly nonsensical pablum with almost "Bot-like" precision and frequency.  So yeah, I see it too.  It's rather disconcerting as I get the feeling that a proportion of these people are not necessarily actually living in Thailand as expats.  Although with that said, a number of them start their posts with, "I've been living in Thailand for 10+ years," yet by their post counts it is obvious that during that time they either were quite ignorant about the existence of Thai Visa and now Aseannow - or - their statement about the length of there stay is simply tosh. Or?  These are new accounts of current members who are using the new account as a pulpit to say things that they would not otherwise say.  I find it odd.

I wrote this last week, then deleted it.  I'll pop it back in here now that were on the topic as it 'fits' the issue.

"I find it interesting that a new crop of AN members with less than 1000 posts have recently shown up over the last couple of months.  They all seem to have something in common.

* Highly critical of those in their host country as well as Asians in general.
* Acts aloof and above the commoners and hoi polloi - Thai, farang, and other foreigners included.
* Highly status conscious (my 💩  smells like 🌹 )
* Very critical of other expats in a "my "richard" is bigger than your "richard" kind of manner.
* Constantly pointing out what they don't like about Thailand and other expats.

Where did you people come from?  Develop a little humility and learn to live with everyone else who are just trying to enjoy their lives."

My recent responses to these 'new' members who bash everything about this country, expats included, is to develop some humility and attempt to assimilate.

You seem like a good person and would be interesting to have a coffee and conversation.  Moderation is slippery slope IMO.

I've had my heart torn to shreds in the past on a couple of occasions in real life.  I dusted myself off and put my mental state back together.  Online insults aren't life changing events for me.  I reflect on some and ignore some.  Some people are simply extremely opinionated and can be much more offensive than I would like.  Hard for these type and maybe some non-expressed empathy is the correct response.  Nice to have the option to choose a response.

The forum rules have changed considerably since the old days, there's none of that nonsense about banned members rejoining under different names because it was impossible to enforce.

Although I don't disagree that '.. some (new) members try to beat each other about how many useless posts they can publish in a day' I don't think it's close to being 'the death of this forum'.

These posters (with seemingly endless time on their hands) are a nuisance but I would counter they are easily ignored for the more interesting stuff that still gets posted here. I personally like the political, economic and world events posts made and use it as an opportunity to educate myself on subjects that I may only have a cursory understanding of. When debating I prefer to use facts rather than feelings which forces me to do some research which in turn hopefully leads to a deeper understanding of the topic in hand. I see this as a positive thing that I probably wouldn't have done if it wasn't for AN posting the subject for debate.

I think you get what you want out of this forum. You can find negativity here if you want (similar to those annoying posters who find unnecessary negatively with Thailand) but with selective choosing and selective posting, there's some good stuff still here.
