I have two accounts with SCB.  I am on a Non Imm O visa and had no difficulty opening both.  All they needed to see was my passport and proof of address, which I provided using my Thai Driving Licence.

How long ago was this?

  • SCB are very strict now for account opening. They have big silly book of what acceptable ID looks like, and zero ability to reason beyond what the big book of A, B,Cs say. For example even though I'm

As in many things in Thailand, quite often it's not the law, it's not the book that makes the rules. It's God.   God is he or she,  behind the counter.   If one God does not grant the wish,

I will be closing my SCB account, they're a waste of time.

The don't even have a website anymore, only app.

It reads inconsistant depending on the branch and clerk you get.

Has anybody had problems getting their money out from a retirement deposit for example, like an account liquidation? For example, needing to provide further documents or tax forms?

If policies are being made up as I go I would be hesitant opening a large savings account at all.

I have held an SCB account for decades... he's two reasons why I wouldn't bother with them now (and will make move to another bank).

1) No internet Banking (they shut that down this year).

2) No option for the 'face recognition' for foreigners, so we can't transfer more than 50,000 baht at a time (unless we sign a 'risk waver').

May not be required but if provided one benefit is that you can be exempt from mandatory 15% tax withholding and the need to file a Thai Income Tax Return to reclaim it.

Is this 15% on interest earned?

my (prospective) employer strongly prefers employees to use SCB and pays to SCB 5 days earlier than other banks.

A bit of a chicken/egg but you may be able to get an account at the SCB branch which your prospective employer uses. Maybe ask the prospective employer for a supporting letter. Or once you have an offer in hand you should be able to open the account.

I do have an  offer in hand.

Maybe that is enough.

I will ask what branch they use.

I am using cash for a lot of things now that would be easier with the bank app.
