I"ve avoided expat gatherings for years because of the expats.

You either get the corporate 'Masters of the Universe' with their permanently pregnant wives breeding at the company's expense, or the 'financial advisors' trying to grab a part of people's pensions.

The only slight positives were the moderately attractive Thai girls from the relocation companies and the sponsored hotel snacks

I'm a lifetime member of the Chiang Mai Expat Club.

I used to go to the twice monthly breakfasts (when they were at the River Market) to socialize with others who I knew would be there.

I stopped going for two reasons:  (1) the people with whom I enjoyed socializing are no longer here; and (2) the breakfast time conflicts with the time I now frequent the gym.

That's a nice venue to attend anyhow. Just saw that it closed down. 😅 Probably would have went when I lived there, but I felt too young at the time.

Would not really be interested if it was held in a windowless conference room somewhere.

I completely disagree, I've met a lot of expats here who are exceptional people, smart, funny, accomplished, successful, and engaging. Granted you're not going to meet them sitting at a local bar drinking beer at noon.

If I had some sort of expect club in my area I think I would attend. I'd certainly be open to the idea, why not give it a try?

It's been years.... I'm a member of the CM Expats club....I went to meetings that had a speaker or topic I found useful...

It was an interesting mix from the quiet folks to the ones hunting out perspective clients glad handing & passing out business cards....Then there were guys who had their gals dressed to the 9's, obviously proud to show them off while strutting around...... Everybody showed up, found the same places they always say - with seemingly the same people they did every time....As soon as the meeting adjourned it looked like somebody yelled fire. Very few lingering conversations - boom - gone.....

They tried a NYE party which we went to.... Basically, the farang men seemed to be getting quietly plastered while their women sat at the table all dressed to party & looked bored to death.....Not fun or lively, after about 90 minutes I left.....

The real value to me seemed to be the interest groups....Where hobbyists, computer geeks, chess players, farang women, etc. had set their own groups meetings an agendas = this was a good spinoff of the expats....I basically just quit driving in from 50k away after a year or so and haven't really thought about it much since.....

Too many with the whining grumpy old men syndrome.

What happened to expats here in Thailand, it never used to be like this, many years ago expats were fun to be with but sadly they are now what you have described, I've read so many other comments from members with similar feelings.

Its horrible now posting or commenting on this forum, you get attacked at times.

I'm Australian, I can take the attacks and criticism but it's really weird reading all the hate comments.

I've been a member of AN for over 6 years.

Sadly today I blocked a couple of annoying, antagonizing members after learning you can block members, what a wonderful feature.

It seems some of the Brits are angry here in Thailand, Dan About Thailand, he's English but has made a vlog, saying that the Brits can be the biggest moaners in Thailand.

I didn't move halfway around the world to mix with other expats - in general, I have found expats in Thailand to be either bad, mad or a mixture of both!

This is true. It really doesn't make sense but lots of people stick to their mob.

What age group are you? I find that a lot of the grumpty ones are just sick of life. Mostly 70yo+.

You see happy faces on younger ones.

Make up an outrageous but plausible back story/history, to tell other expats.

Good Idea, I met one who told me and others he was a Tiger keeper, and showed a photo of him hugging one. Another one told me he was an explosive expert and worked in a quarry,

they were both in there 20s and came from OZ. Then the older Americans showed me CIA IDs as if they would let people know.

Dan about Thailand, more like Desperate Dan😆, promoting restaurants so he and his family can get a freebie, seems like he's a authority on Thai language as well judging by his YouTube channel 🥱. I reckon he's the Billy Bull<deleted>ter.

I made Thailand my home in my 30's, I'm now in my 50's.

Over the many years I've had many friends in their 70's, all been good, happy people.

I don't meet many new people these days, just stick to my large family and the friends I've got.

You could be right regarding age and grumpiness, not sure of the demographic of the members that troll me, maybe it's the  elderly.

It seems to be the norm these days, the owner of the local radio station FM103, Tommy Dee does the same thing.

Way of the world. Youtube is just glorified beggars. Podcasters all interview each other and pat each other on the back. The world is kind of like incest but with your clothes on.

I find my joy in a burger place in the hills or a steakhouse full of Thais.

I have steadfastly dodged popping in to the expat society (or whatever it is) in Chiang Mai for 18 straight months. Even with the tantalizing offer of a discount buffet.

It's down to sheer, ignorant predjudice on my part that they're going to be stiffs and do-nothings -based on nothing.

Do you share my view? Based on what?

Have you ever attended such a meeting? How wrong am I?

Sounds like it's  ,"the case of the smiling stiffs?

Speaking of begging, During covid the owner of FM103 had a gofundme page.

Mind you, I am not prejudiced either, but the best Farangs are to be found in Chiang Mai.

Yes, sorry I am easily amused.

The comment did make me chuckle...... he said he would NEVER join a club that would accept him as a member.

It got me thinking about other things.

Hard to find the best foreigners. They aren't in bars. They aren't in expat clubs. Go to a remote resort in the hills you might find 1.

Absolutely mate and the best ones are in the motorbike groups, Brits, Aussies (who I especially like, got the same sense of humour as Brits,) Kiwis, Yanks, Swedes, French, Germans to name but a few, great company, riding or socialising.
