I think you've got this wrong. They'll be there from the start and more than likely involved in the setting up and construction. Apart from that casinos are great washing machines.

Possibly, but for all we know the PM just keeping up on his promises to certain people to repay them for helping him

get elected in the first place and continue support, Who knows, one thing i have learned over the years,

that in Thailand, is the land of everything is possible...

 He has lost the plot, make it legal, well the lotto is legal yet there is still an underground one in every village, Thais are already in debt through gambling online, and at gambling dens, all this is local stuff, they are not going to travel to a Casino some already do to Cambodia though. Indeed, I was disappointed by my Daughter Thai language Primary school exit score somewhere in the lower thirties, until I found out that she was just slightly above national average. 

 

While she scored a hundred in English. But 100% Internet English, better than nothing.

Asians have a serious gambling problem.

 

More sensible and mature Asian governments find ways to earn valuable income through tax revenues from legalised gambling, while preventing access and abuse by the locals.

 

At the moment, in Thailand, all illegal gambling is controlled by the RTP and certain social elites and I doubt this PM has the clout to change this.

Start woth modernizing the country .. Stop with all the conservatisch laws, open the doors , welcome people and businesses, stop with chasing foreigners, educate your people and stop corruption which can easily detected by the Revenue Department...  But you need balls for it instead of staying with the dinosaurs of the army based Government.. It all will do more good than gambling, That will not save the economy but will bring it further down as many people are already addicted to gambling..

If such suggested "legal " casinos were of the type and scale of those just across the borders to Cambodia or Myanmar then quite possibly very large  amounts of Thai bht will stop exiting Thailand. That may not be popular with the investors in those neighbouring domains. The internal illegal enterprises might suffer a bit but most of the "local" gambling is small scale although prolific. High rollers are few but debts are many and large !

Anything, except eradicating systemic corruption in government, industry and society, nepotism and bribery spawning inept decision makers who compound failure...

Yes, gambling is much easier to implement than changing ones nature, but... once established and integrated into a corrupt system, gambling won't do much to help the economy, it will help certain individuals who control, legislate and cover up. Then something else will have to save the economy, again, and be corrupted, again.

You will run out of things to pin your hope on! And then what? A war? With those Generals?

It saved economies for small sovereign, autonomous and semi-autonomous areas like Native American tribes, Monaco and regional areas in Southern Africa. But for a developed and populous nation like Thailand the economy is much more complex, ie., international trade relations.

 

Casinos can more quickly fuel a lagging economy within a relatively short period than FTA's for example, albeit developing strong anti-corruption oversight organizations of Thai casinos might lag. Foreign-based experience should assist to establish such organizations. 

 

Thus, legalizing casinos in Thailand will BOOST Thailand's economy in the short term but for a sustainable economy Thailand will need much, much more in international trade to SAVE Thailand's economy.

The proposed tax rates are actually competitive but it's years away. Plus they want one mega-project in each region.

Not true at all. Gambling is not legal during a wedding or funeral (just because you see it happening doesn't mean it's legal) 

Gamblin is, however, legal at horse racing (which is indicative of how nonsensical many laws in Thailand are.

Here in the Kingdom of Thailand, there are certain sort of gaming activities that come part and parcel with funerary rites and funeral processions, for lack of better term, basically the entire event is a funeral. You will see and it is possible to see certain very limited gaming license extended for like a day. There are also events which very occasionally come up where licensure of what's up otherwise to be deemed a gambling activity may be approved for a very, very limited circumstances.
