yeah who hasn't seen that if they've ever been in a bar?

it's absolutely an ego trip.

but you have to admit, its the closest thing most people will ever get to feeling like a rock star with a bunch of girls screaming your name.

I don't understand. It seems to make him happy. Why care.

  • You mean Bob declining a drink?

Possibly his ego is fuelled by giving to others.  Everyone is different.  It probably makes him feel happy.  Obviously if they don't give anything in return and show fake appreciation, then it's a bit

there's a bloke I know who frequents the red light districts in a popular tourist destination.

he goes by the name 'Fred'

though I'm pretty sure that isn't his real name.

I have met him about 4 times now,

he looks like he's in his early - mid 40's.

The girls always make a fuss over him whenever he is in the vicinity.

you can hear them at all the bars screaming and shouting his name.

'fred...' freddy, how are you!!!'

'awwww, freddy ma leaw'

they all make a real fuss over this character.

then I found out why...

He came and sat next to me on a stool and immediately bought every girl in the bar a drink.

then he offered to buy me one (which I declined)

then he bought all the girls something to eat.

he also bought 1 of the girls some medicine from the pharmacy.

he stayed about an hour and then left.

apparently he does this on average once a month.

He will come down to the red light district and buy any of the girls whatever they want.

what motivates people like Fred?

have you ever met any of these characters before?

he was a strange lad when I actually spoke to him,

a bit weird, but the girls absolutely adored him

apparently he carries a wad of cash in his pocket everytime and spends the lot.

he wasn't much of a looker but he did have a nice shirt on.

I haven't seen him for a few weeks now, but according to the girls in the bar he still does his monthly rounds..

he's like the monthly santa claus for the bar girls.

they wont hear a bad word said about him!

bob.

It sounds like one of your bs stories. Im surprised, did you give yourself a fake name.  After all the bs you've slung on here some bloke appears to have one upped you for the pauper you are and it hurt your feelings? DId you show him your Folex watch?

its tough being you isnt bob. spin a tail of bs and then cant comment to someone calling you out on it in the way you want to?  You never answered the question though. Didnt you show him your Folex watch so he could see you an equal? Or was it the matter that a "geezer" who's only 40 out did your for real old geezer position?

I've seen this sort of stuff in the OP with my own eyes.

Probably been going on for decades in these bars.

And therefore classifies as a "ritual".

Maybe you dont care to admit on a polite farang forum that farangs behave this way.

I was sat in a bar once and a guy showed up with a push cart with party dresses for sale. I bought at least three for the girls. Quite good fun as I remember.

Type that in Thai and I just may except you are real.

I never said it doesnt happen and have seen it myself. this is hardly a polite forum and hasn't been for years. Bob has a habit of creating fictious stories like this about himself doing this. When a real one from someone happens in front of him his ability to understand and comment is inhibited, insulated or confused.

Good lord man, after 17 years on TV/AN you're as aware of the resident cheapy Charlies as I am, I'm not about to name and shame; though most are fairly shameless.

As for 'Fred', whether real or a figment of Bob's imagination, good on him - why not spread a little happiness?

Oh, don´t worry about that. He is just using himself as an example and comb all with the same brush.

Yeah, have seen a few. I don´t really get what´s going on in their head, as you say. They just spend the cash and go home alone. Doesn´t really make any sense. However, I have never spent much thought about them.

I must confess, that I have been this guy at least one time (albeit on a smaller scale).

I lived in Phuket for 15 years, then had to go back to Germany. On my first holiday back over -- I was still recognized in a surprising number of places and greeted with the same smile, money or not -- I went to all the bars that had accepted my previous cheap charlie ways and spent the "difference".

Made me indeed feel good to give symbolically some of the happy mood and enjoyment back I had accumulated there over the years. Was this an ego thing? Maybe a little bit of that too, but I could afford it, and the memories I made were indeed priceless.

guys like fred have been around Thailand for decades. Not a new phenomenon by any means. Any average bloke can feel like a big baller flexing his muscles by merely throwing around small amounts of cash in patts. But you can't get what he gets out of it because you throw nickels around like manhole covers. If your wallet wasn't tighter than a bull’s arse during fly season then the girls might actually have something nice to say about you too.

there's so much wrong with this comment it will take me a million years to dissect it all.

In Hua Hin quite a few years ago an American guy who worked on rigs used to come into town and splash the cash, buying drinks, food etc for the girls, then take a few back to his place.

Sounds like he was a "utilizer of the services of prostitutes"

I’ve done this but not on a regular basis. A small bar I would buy rounds for the 3-4 women at the bar. I don’t remember buying food. But I may have. I’ve been to places where guys have bought a round for the house. It makes the place a little more lively for the bar

Ordinarily, Big Bad Bob does weave tales of fiction.

But this just might be a case of ....
