On Saturday, July 20th, 2024, Thailand will observe Dharma Day, followed by the start of Buddhist Lent on Sunday, July 21st, 2024.

These major religious days have been honored by the Thai people for generations. During this period, citizens will participate in merit-making activities, almsgiving, observing precepts, and engaging in religious practices at various temples, thereby fostering and promoting Buddhism among the Thai populace.

In conjunction with these observances, the Thai Prime Minister’s Office has issued a notice prohibiting the sale of alcoholic beverages on religious holidays.

  • In one short paragraph, you admit that you don't understand the attraction to alcohol, but still give your expert opinion on the people that choose to use it.

I used to get a 24 can case of Beer Chang from Villa Market a few days before. And as someone said, surely one day of not going out isn't that big a deal!

Not the point. The point is people including Thais will be drinking alcohol over these two days yet the sale of alcohol in supermarkets, 711 etc. is prohibited all because of some Buddhist dictate.

I almost forgot, I'll stock up today,

Good for tourists who come and enjoy their holidays... Restricted alcohol sales hours and religious holidays no alcohol at all... Only available in Thailand as hub of tourism industry...Purpose still unknown as monks in principle are not allowed to drink alcohol but that is always... People who practice Buddhism is advised to stay away of it, but they are not forced, unless in Thailand where there is always a way out.....

The complaint is not really about not going out for 2 days for people who live here, it’s about the impact of these decisions on the holiday plans of tourists. You plan a trip to Bangkok for 3 or 4 days built around a weekend with a few friends and then you get no pubs, clubs etc open. It’s unfortunate that Thailand doesn’t more openly advertise that sometimes fun is cancelled here and occasionally at short notice 🙂

 What next, convert to Islam?

The government are only banning the Sales of alcohol, says nothing about having a drink

Oh, come on.  Those of us who know places like Pattaya realized there are plenty of places to buy a drink.  And, mom and pop shops away from the main areas.  Figure it out.

Only those who drink to excess... social drinking never hurt anyone.
