Price of beer in Bangkok

Featured Replies

Don't mind paying that price at the airport or in a smart pub, but for a standard place they are taking the mik. Thailand has always been a rip for beer (relatively... look at Vietnam for comparison). High tax + huge markups for dishwater chang beer of all things. Mind you, have a decent European pint of beer and you're probably looking at 300 baht in those places. Stick to 7. 👍

Mixed thoughts of course.   I certainly wouldn't pay those beer prices, or drink that crap beer, but they do need to make a profit.

OP didn't state where he was ... location location location.

If in an area, and know some idiot will pay a silly price, theN I'd charge it also.   They offer it, up to you to pay for it.

So 3-5X mark up for that beer.   Anyone complaining about the price of fries, or a burger.  Potatoes all of ฿39 a kg, and some charge ฿70-90 for a half a potato, maybe.

That burger, ground beef <฿300 a kg, and you're paying ฿250-300-350 & up for 150gr maybe.... 5-6X the cost of ground beef.  Roll cost ฿5 baht, salad on top, another 5-10 baht with a squirt of dressing.

Or a ฿490ml Snowy from 7-11 for ฿59 & double pork cheeseburger for ฿42.

As always  .... UP2U

Rent, staff, and AC cost add up.  If open air, no extra charge for sewer stench, if curbside for that people watching.

Plenty of British / Irish theme pubs on Sukhumvit that do pints of Chang, Tiger, Asahi and the like for 100B a pint during happy hour; great cheap food as well.

I suspect that the OP was in one of the shadier establishments but one can still get 24h, 100B draught beers in some of those bars.

Nothing like flying to visit a foreign country and sitting in a Brit pub :cheesy:

The location was soi 4 Nana near the Nana hotel . All of the bars were over 100 baht ( some 150 baht ) for a small Chang beer . My hotel only charged 90 baht which goes to prove that the local bars are way over charging . I guess they are targeting the 2 week millionaires who are used to paying these prices in their home countries .

Yea, y'all couldn't pick a worse spot, as simply a tourist trap, especially in not there for P4P.

100% mark up is reasonable, but 70 baht & up for small crap beer, that's a bit silly.

I've stayed, stay at ibis soi 4 a bit (pet friendly) and simply don't see the attraction of that area.  Actually avoid walking past most of it, by using soi 6 to go to/from the BTS.

Never been, but hear soi Cowboy prices are even worse :cheesy:

Want to spend too much for beer, head up to Chit Beer on the weekend, at Ko Kret.  At least it taste good, and I see they even offer food now.  The view is a lot better.

There used to be a small bar on soi 20 or 22? Eighty Baht bar, owned by a Belgian guy.....ALL drinks, including spirits were 80B till 7pm......

Anyone in the Nana area can find 90 baht bottled beer during happy hour at some of the beer bars right across from the Ibis Styles hotel on Soi 4.  One of the bars is air conditioned, and they all seem to have pool tables.

Any tourist area around the world is the same, you're getting wacked, come to Phuket on soi Bangla, if you have a problem stay away. even the pussy gets more expensive.

Beers on Bangla Road can be expensive, if you’re not careful. Really expensive, But there are usually some deals.  People frequenting that area are usually on vacation and have money to blow. So, be prepared.  As for Patong Beach generally?  I always spend less money there.  I guess because there’s not much to do during the day.  It can seem like a ghost town. Then, around 9pm, people come out of the woodwork.

Why is it so difficult to understand the things are different in different countries?

In Thailand tax and service charge is mostly not included. Accept it.

Nonsense!
I've lived here long enough to visit many bars and have never encountered a bar (or restaurant) that charges extra for service or excludes tax.
I will admit I don't frequent high-end establishments so maybe I'm missing out on the pleasure of seeing a bill with tax and service extra!

You should try them one day - if you can afford them.

In Bangkok, and probably also in the rest of Thailand, it is normal that restaurants show the price before tax and service.

That is not a tourist thing.

In Bangkok, and probably also in the rest of Thailand, it is normal that some, but far from all, bars and restaurants show the price before tax and service.

No, it does not prove that the bars are "way overcharging", all it proves that different places offer different locations/facilities/opportunities and you have the choice of which you want to take advantage.

I guess your quote is based on your previous experiences ?

You check/save the receipt you get with a beer?

It was not a quote, it was a statement, and yes, when I stated that: "...beer in gash joints costs more that beer in dive hotels...", it was indeed based on my experience buying beers in both gash-joints and dive hotels. Has your experience been different?

How much do you pay for a beer in your home country in a place like Hooters?

What was the average time you were staring at the girls before you ordered a second beer?

In the U.S., bars like Hooters or Twin Peaks usually have reasonably priced beer during happy hour.  And they add sales tax to the bill, which can vary depending on the location.

Here’s part of a Twin Peaks menu from Arizona.

Compare the price of a case of branded beer in a supermarket in the UK with the price of a pint in a pub....and see what extortionate is.

That's why i don't bother with Bangkok anymore just much more expensive than Pattaya

Prices are about venue and location, not the beer which is the same anywhere. I pay more often, but I understand that I'm paying for the venue to be in a nice place with a marble table, fan, comfortable chair or be around people who are not losers. The Op is complaining about not being able to afford the venue and needs to be more selective in that regard.

And "Happy Hour" (as I remember) is usually one hour.

So, $6 for a 650ml draft on special, plus 7% tax, plus 20% tip, times 36B/$, yes?

So, about B277

You would really need to search for a deal like that in the USA these days. Probably more around $9-$10 not including the required tip per beer, usually $1 (they don't like change 🤣).

But how do you compare supermarket/ 7eleven prices with a hotel or restaurant bar in an area with some of the most expensive property in Thailand.

They do operate ++, plus service, plus tax which puts 17% on top. Not a practice I like at the retail level, all prices should be inclusive.

This aircon resto that charges 45 for a small can of Chang, you do not state the location or whether it is a happy hour price.

Opposite my home is the Old English Pub in Thonglor where they charge happy hour prices of 45 baht a pint of draught Leo (before 2pm) rising to 85 a pint before 7pm. But these prices are very, very much the exception in central Bangkok.

I prefer to compare like with like.

You pay for location, beer and atmosphere, if not willing to pay asking price, there is several places who sell beer below 100 baht. No need to complain, and sure there is several guides to cheapest bar online if you looking 😁
