A giant python, measuring 4 meters in length, caused quite a stir in Udon Thani by sneaking into a chicken coop in the middle of the night and devouring three prized fighting cocks. The incident led to a rescue team being called to capture and release the snake back into the wild. Villagers, believing the snake brings good fortune, quickly sought out lucky numbers to try their luck.

 

Udon Thani's Sawang Metta Thammasathan Foundation rescue team received a call on July 27 to capture a large python that had secretly devoured three expensive fighting cocks at house number 106/2 in Ban Khai Senee community, Mueang Udon Thani district. Upon receiving the call, the team quickly assembled their snake-catching equipment and headed to the location.

 

At the scene, the team met Surachai Chinma, the 52-year-old homeowner, who led them to the backyard where he kept his prized fighting cocks. The team discovered a massive python with a visibly swollen belly, resting contentedly. They also found a dead chicken, which they suspected had been killed by the same python.

 

Using their trained expertise, the rescue team carefully extracted the snake from the backyard and measured its size on the road.

 

The python, approximately 4 meters in length and weighing around 20 kilograms, was then placed in a bag for transport to a suitable location for release. Surachai explained that he had already lost two hens previously, initially thinking they were stolen by people but never suspecting a python. 

 

At around 12:30 a.m., while sitting inside his house, Surachai heard his chickens clucking in distress. He rushed outside, suspecting a theft, only to find a large python coiled inside the coop. Though his first instinct was to kill the snake, he decided it was simply trying to find food and chose to have it safely relocated.

 

Surachai’s neighbors, upon learning about the incident, gathered to look for lucky numbers, including the house number and other figures, believing the snake’s presence was a sign of good fortune. They plan to use these numbers in upcoming lottery draws.

When it suits.

Having some experience with pythons they swallow their prey whole and find somewhere to rest while the food digests which can take days. Attempting to capture them when they are 'full' results in the reptile vomiting up the part digested meal and the smell is revolting. They are not venomous but can inflict powerful bites.

A giant specimen, in my opinion would be 6m plus in length.

I wonder how many of these captured pythons actually finish up in a cooking pot rather than being 'returned to the wild'.

Our dog killed one and it was worth 50K.  I was on holiday at the time and had the village head look into.  It ended up being 2 kilometers away.  The village head just laughed and told him wasn't getting anything from me.

My BIL tried it on me, joking I think but never sure, I just replied that  soup from aThai fighting chicken still tastes the same whether 30 or 1000 baht per kilo so 30 would be all he gets.

Have never seen a python in Udon Thani in 16 years. Have seen 4 metre water snakes, but not pythons. Strangely enough, one of a similar size also attacked my brother-in-laws chickens only 2 weeks ago here. Their extending their range?
