Phuket Named World’s Most Overcrowded Destination Amid Tourism Boom

Phuket, Thailand’s picturesque island getaway, has earned the unfortunate distinction of being the world’s most overcrowded destination. Once renowned for its serene beaches and tranquil atmosphere, Phuket now sees tourists outnumbering locals by an astonishing 118 to one.

The issue of overtourism has been thrust into the spotlight since the global travel industry roared back to life post-Covid. Holidaymakers, eager to make up for lost time, have inundated many popular spots, putting immense pressure on local infrastructure and environments. Recently, Venice took the drastic step of introducing a tourist tax to curb the influx of visitors, joining Thailand, which imposed a similar levy earlier this year.

Other Thai holiday destinations such as Pattaya and Krabi also feature high on the list of crowded hotspots, ranking second and third, respectively. Meanwhile, Macau in China and Miami in the United States round out the top ten.

Phuket, the largest island in Thailand, boasts 90 miles of stunning coastline and world-famous beaches like Kata and Karon. Nevertheless, not all parts of the island are idyllic. Patong, the most popular resort area, is heavily crowded with tourists, beach gear, and vibrant nightlife, leading to a less than peaceful experience for many visitors.

One disillusioned tourist expressed their frustration: “Nothing could have prepared me for the hordes of people. The island, the beaches, even the tours to nearby islands felt overwhelmingly crowded.”

Despite the throngs of visitors, there are still quieter corners of Phuket to be discovered. The northern and eastern regions of the island offer a more genuine Thai experience with fewer tourists and more affordable prices. However, the island’s infrastructure is struggling to cope. The influx of tourists, particularly arriving on non-stop, large aircraft, has pushed Phuket to its limits.

In response, Thailand has implemented a 300-baht tourist tax on all airline tickets to the country. This measure aims to regulate the soaring visitor numbers, which plummeted from 40 million in 2019 to just 200,000 during the pandemic, before surging back dramatically.

THis is a RAcist perspective - the Russians Chinese and Indians aren't at fault - the Thai ruling elite are -

Tourist numbers are still 20 to 25% lower than immediately before Covid.

What has happened is regardless of any onservation of resources those who run tpourism in Thailand have grabbed as many cutomers as they could andcrammed them into the traditional tourist hot spots - so the density there is out of all proe[portion to old numbers when tourism was distributed over a far wider portion of the country.

Tourist numbers are still 20 to 25% lower than immediately before Covid.

What has happened is regardless of any conservation of resources those who run tourism in Thailand have grabbed as many customers as they could and crammed them into the traditional tourist hot spots - so the density there is out of all proportion to old numbers when tourism was distributed over a far wider portion of the country.

Even government ministers have been saying that other areas should be trying to get more tourists in - but they can't.

Remember too that it is much cheaper to fly to Thailand from Russia, China and India than it is from US or EU.

I havebeen sayingfor nearly a year now that centres like Pattay and Phukt are suffering form over tourism - but don't blame other countries, it is THailand that is to blame

THailand aleways goes for the lowest common denominator.

I know that there was a lot of discussion about this tax, but I thought that it was shelved.

Id like to know where they get their information from. For a start the article mentions the 300 baht tourist tax, which has yet to be implemented, and the top three destinations all being Thai looks fishy to me. No mention of certain Greek or Spanish islands and major cities..

I think the data may be based on a ratio of tourists to locals. It is well known that Phuket's so- called population is undercooked as most residents are registered elsewhere in Thailand. That's probably true of Pattaya and Krabi too.

Phuket is overcrowded in high season but so are many others. Worst in the world? I doubt it

I am surprised Thailand did not press charges against this guy for damaging their image haha... I'm happy to say I have never been there and have no plans in future to go there.

On another note. It should make Thailand very happy they can now say they are number 1 in something. Overcrowding. haha..

This was made last year. Imagine how it is now.

Phipats post Covid dream, and this is the end result.

Numbers are everything, sustainability is forgotten.

Phukets MO, milk it while you can

Well as he can't even be paid to go to phuket, he'd never know who's there.

Good. All TAT talk about is numbers. So, they should be very happy now .

Anyone who has lived in Thailand can tell the difference. They might look like us but they're not.

They're Slavic, you can't tell the difference ? It's like Thai, Vietnamese or Cambodian. There's some blurring around the edge on some people but it can be very obvious too. Especially if you're comparing Japanese against Thai its' going to be hard to ever guess wrong unless you're very new to the region.

They're not at fault and "the elites" don't chose who comes but some of us find certain groups repellant regardless of how they got here. Indians, Arabs and Chinese rub me the wrong so I will avoid them.

Thai people don't even like them much right? When I first arrived in Thailand a Thai woman told me a proverb "between an Indian and a snake who do you hit first? The Indian". Curious how the poor Thai people in Phuket are coping with this surge.

Wouldnt go there if you paid me,vastly overpriced tourist trap full of miserable russians and chinese tourists, plenty of mafia money flowing through there too,the asian version of marbella

Not true. Bali has owned that title for 25 years or longer. It took me 2 hours to travel 2 km. in Legian on a motorbike. And 90% of the trip was on the sidewalk. It is beyond a nightmare. The people who make this a claim do not know what overcrowded is. They don't have a clue. Bali is horrendous. At least the SW third of the island.

Phuket is busy and spoiled. I was there late last year, and never need to go back. Far too many unfriendly, nasty Russians for my taste. But, busy is a relative term.

There you have it.

To all the muppets who claim that TAT make up figures, first, second and third! Gold, silver and bronze.

In the world.
Not to mention Bangkok being number one tourist destination in the world also.

They should put a bronze statue of TAT boss NatthriyaThaweevong up on the roundabout with the hero sisters Lady Chan and Lady Mook.

it is because they don’t have the good infrastructure there that we have in Thailand. Not because it is more crowded.

The poor people of Phuket are cashing in and are the richest per capita in Thailand by miles. Thousands of USD millionaires have been created because of their great success in attracting well heeled tourists as well as us western sex tourists.

Something for everybody.

You couldn’t afford it.

Tell all the Phuketians to leave the island = problem solved!

hmmm…. plan for future. AVOID Phuket?

Government created that lovely title for the Island, hundreds of thousands fleeing not holidaying, keeping the local police busy anyway........deal with it !
