A few days ago I retired to Buddha Hill. Life was good and no stress.

Yesterday I heard somebody knock my door. Turned out to be my very first Thai gal 6 years ago came to visit!

I had to go back to work.... but it wasn't unpleasant. Was very rewarding to see she left happy.

Beautiful absolutely beautiful thankyou for your service Sir

And for the other six days in the week?

There are always things to do and nature to watch.

Sometimes the chickens come over from the adjacent farm. If I have some food they are welcome to it. The other day I made a bit of a booboo though. I was eating some kao pow, and I left the plate next to the hammock, when I went to investigate a disturbance by the side of the pond. It turned out to be just a farm dog in the shallows. When I turned round to go back I saw a chicken helping itself to me grub. It wasn't so scared when I got to the hammock. I shared my meal with him. He is now a regular visitor. But, as yet, will not let me pet him.

I am thinking of building a raft that I can move to the middle of the pond to allow ducks to nest there. We had ducks before. I'll speak to the Mrs about getting some more. Maybe some turkeys too.

Would you be there if prostitution was off the table?

Yes!

Never went to a pro but never has been starving. Or dating my hand...

Vietnam issues no retirement visa. Border runs every 90 days. You risk the chance they refuse entry after a time.

I've been coming and going but never worry that in Vietnam. They don't take photos, finger prints, interrogate etc. Officers are not specially polite or welcoming but that's OK and I think it's more of shyness.

In Thailand it's a real threat regardless of visas, papers etc

However, it's been better last two times. Maybe because I entered "Thai Only" line as pensioner?

Been discussed ad nauseam. Doesn't matter anyway. Whatever you think you know, or decide, today can, and probably will, change tomorrow.

this is a guarantee for sure after the OECD agreement and as govt coffers seem to be empty or close to that around the world today plus the changing weather.  In the US many people are fleeing California and New York and have been doing so lately due to the high taxes in those states plus the high cost of housing.  The folks are fleeing to Texas (no state tax) and Florida - retirement heaven I guess.

to each their own choice.  Not as easy as it used to be IMHO.

I retired in Thailand about 14 years ago after living in Thailand and being married to a Thai wife for about six years before that.

Sounds horrendous, come up and visit me for some peace and quiet.

And some Rock & Roll with plenty of Vino and Weed.

this is pretty funny.

the "I want to rock n roll all night and party every day" Kiss dude admits that he doesn't drink or do drugs.

I agree with him. it's a waste of time. try to get laid as much as possible, do sports, read books, listen to music, watch movies, and just take a pass on the substances that numb you. sitting around smoking weed and drinking is not my idea of a good retirement. we need another thread ... HOW did you retire? doing what? not where.

Weed and sex. A whole nother level. When I discovered that I realized I had been missing out on how much better sex could have been for the last 30+ years if I smoked weed. Don't knock it until you try it.

Just to add I'm exploring Vietnam as a retire option

Retired expats cannot own a car in Vietnam, so if you like the “freedom”, safety (compared to a motorcycle) and convenience of having car, then avoid this country.

Not so;

"Foreigners are permitted to purchase a car in Vietnam if they: Are living and working in Vietnam. Possess a valid passport. Have a visa that is longer than three months."

No one said expat workers in Vietnam are not allowed to purchase a car! The post you quoted clearly states retired expats. Furthermore the topic is about where you retired to - not where you’re going to work at.

I keep intending to retire, probably in the Philippines (UK index linked pension), but I always find something more important than sitting on a beach. This week finds me teaching science in north Myanmar!

Interesting life you have had since arriving in NE Asia. Are you comfortable with your finances approaching the age when working will possibly not be an option?

True, but in TH you don't have to do border runs every 90 days and be left hanging in suspense if immi's gonna let you back in the country. For now in VN it seems automatic extension after 90 day border run. But anything could happen....

I would think there is more peace of mind with TH's visas for long stayers.

You're not safe into old age anywhere unless you have residency, or preferably citizenship. You can get booted out in your 70's due to changing requirements.

If you are able it's best to work towards citizenship in a place you can best afford while you are still young.

If your retired ,I would like to know why your retired to your area where you live and why .

And I don't care if it's Houston in Georgia or the backwoods of Alaska or Alice Springs ( no one would retire to Alice Springs)

Why did you pick Hua Hin over Pattaya ?

Why did you pick Da Nang over Bangkok?

Why did you pick Cambodia or the Philippines

Now obviously most UK residents pick Philippines because of their pension

Now it could be medical reasons ,you stay in Australia for free health care

Lifestyle, you enjoy the Opera so you need to live in Bangkok or Manila

It could be financially, you live in the Nirun in Pattaya because you have nothing

Why did you pick your area to permanent residence and why

Just to add I'm exploring Vietnam as a retire option ,

Why do you want to know where I live? Do you want to visit me? 😱

Great! This what everyone should do.

Were you a pilot? If so you already saw all that from above 🙂but RV'ing is living among different people.

You could just give the province, not your house address & ph # :coffee1:

And why ... I think that's the important part people may be curious about, and the answers may surprise some people.   Especially if you moved around from original location.

Some like the hustle & bustle of metro living, and has it's pros & cons.  Other the opposite, and enjoy a bit of rural, if not even extreme rural.

I'm in between 'rural', with no immediate neighbors (100+ meters away), but 5-10 mins from everything I need; Makro, HomePro, Global chains.   Along with plenty of ma/pa options for food.   Anything else, online will provide.

Weather & pollution are other consideration people may be interested in.  Not for me, but most important for many, the P4P & nightlife availability, and western food, for those that never cooked for themselves.

The need for personal transport, if willing & able to self drive, or not.   MCs aren't for everyone, and 4 wheelers can be a huge part of one's budget.  So big metros & tourist areas having, is a major plus, if not wanting to own or drive.
