GammaGlobulin Posted December 20, 2024 Posted December 20, 2024 Do you flaunt your wealth in Thailand? Simple question, but of great import. The question is: a. Do you find your life happier living in a place where people do not flaunt their wealth? b. Do you find your life happier living in a place where people hide their wealth, and live simpler lives even though they might have tons of money? Here in Thailand, as accurately as I can see, most of those with money do not flaunt their wealth. Those without wealth are less subjected to the “in your face” flaunting of wealth by their neighbors. Does this make for a happier society? Let’s compare this to the USA, just for starters: In the USA, the flaunting of wealth is what American society is all about. What is the point of having riches if one cannot flaunt it, day and night. Do you have a Gold Rolex? Maybe this is OK....but....if you flaunt your Rolex, then..... .....And If so, then this is in very bad taste because you should have purchased something less heavy, maybe. Disparity of wealth in a society can be more easily tolerated if there is no flaunting. So, let’s all do our best to not flaunt. OK? Because, despite what you might think…it is this lack of flaunting of wealth that makes life happier in Thailand, for both you and me. Best regards, Gamma Note: He loves gold.....ONLY Gold...... 1 2
bkk6060 Posted December 21, 2024 Posted December 21, 2024 They sure flaunt it in Bangkok. The ones who don't have the money go into big debt and try to flaunt it. Other areas of the country minimally. 1
Popular Post jerrymahoney Posted December 21, 2024 Popular Post Posted December 21, 2024 Yes -- I have a Honda Wave 110 instead of a 100 1 5 20

I'm Aussie, RigPig, so that's a big NO, no flaunting from me. Children's mother did/does regularly, I hate it. My girlfriend dresses casual, no bling, very little makeup, I dress shorts, T shirt and sneakers. Most of my friends are well off, they don't flaunt. Rolex and other high prices items stored in bank vault, safety box, never worn. 1 1 1
Popular Post KhunLA Posted December 21, 2024 Popular Post Posted December 21, 2024 Nah ... have very basic house. Don't think anyone is impressed with our MG ZS or Deco scooter, as inexpensive transport. I dress for comfort, short, collared shirt (made by wife, her label) & sandals. Pretty unimpressive, except for my handsome smile. Stay off the radar of the career criminals who look for wealthy idiots flashing their bling 1 4 1
Popular Post howto Posted December 21, 2024 Popular Post Posted December 21, 2024 Nope, I never have flaunted wealth. GG would appreciate you coming back to the IT forum, tell us what you did to get all your monitors connected,,, Been a while, just saying. 3

save the frogs Posted December 21, 2024 Posted December 21, 2024 It's all relative. I was in a restaurant with a guy once and I ordered a glass of wine and he thought I was being arrogant and "flaunting my wealth." Because I guess where he comes from in hicksville, they only drink beer. I might buy a very very small gold coin pendant to wear around my neck. I think it's so small that it won't be perceived as flaunting wealth. 1
Popular Post Sandboxer Posted December 21, 2024 Popular Post Posted December 21, 2024 Only when they piss me off. Then the singlet comes off and I wear a shirt with sleeves and shoes with strings. Drives them into a frenzy. 5
Popular Post Briggsy Posted December 21, 2024 Popular Post Posted December 21, 2024 You do not flaunt your wealth here but it is very important (chiefly for Thais) to signal their social status. The two can easily be confused as one implies the other but not necessarily. E.g. the choice of an E-class Mercedes Benz may appear to be a show of wealth but is more likely to be an indicator of status. The graduation picture and degree from a government university displayed in a prominent position is all about status. Status has a large bearing on how you are treated (again chiefly for Thais). Wealth with zero status may potentially attract the wrong sort of friends. 1 2
Popular Post Lacessit Posted December 21, 2024 Popular Post Posted December 21, 2024 I am a minimalist. I've never understood the need to impress family, friends and neighbors with any possessions I may have. Irrelevant anyway, most of the stuff I buy is secondhand. 1 2
pomchop Posted December 21, 2024 Posted December 21, 2024 Loads of americans are head over heels in debt on credit cards where interest rates are aproaching 30%....but of course little johnny absolutely has to have the newest i phone every year. Sadly most americans do not understand the difference between what they need and what they want....And i suspect applies to most other countries and the "flauntin" of "wealth" for many people. As of the second quarter of 2024, the average American credit card debt was $6,329, which is a 6% increase from the same time in 2023.

MalcolmB Posted December 21, 2024 Posted December 21, 2024 Yes I flaunt it. You do much better with the ladies in Thailand if they know you are well heeled. 1 2
thrilled Posted December 21, 2024 Posted December 21, 2024 I don’t flaunt it. I do buy what I want. I have a Honda civic over here I bought new. Many times I take a tuk tuk and leave it parked. I have a $3,000 watch I wear. But not a Rolex. My clothes are for comfort 1 1
suzannegoh Posted December 21, 2024 Posted December 21, 2024 Is it OK to spend money if not "flaunting it"? 2
transam Posted December 21, 2024 Posted December 21, 2024 No, I don't want them to know I'm brassic........😂 1
Popular Post jippytum Posted December 21, 2024 Popular Post Posted December 21, 2024 Absolutely... I sometimes have the chocolate covered ice cream cone at KFC. 1 4
Hanuman2547 Posted December 21, 2024 Posted December 21, 2024 No, I never flaunt even the slightest appearance of wealth in Thailand or in my home country. It can just invite unwanted attention.
Sandboxer Posted December 21, 2024 Posted December 21, 2024 No need to spend money, just drop pants in public.
Popular Post kingstonkid Posted December 21, 2024 Popular Post Posted December 21, 2024 If you flaunt your wealth here you are only asking for trouble. Better to spend when you need to. I tip well and look after staff. They know I am farang and have money. How much they do not know and that is the way it should be even my other half is unsure how rich or poor I am. 2 1 1
OneManShow Posted December 21, 2024 Posted December 21, 2024 When building of my house finished one of neighbors asks why exterior looks poor?!!! my gf said what important is inside that is very nice. Never try to show more than what people need to see and keep it simple. 1 1
PBob Posted December 21, 2024 Posted December 21, 2024 Flaunting it is very big here, even if you have not got it. The new car kept on a red number plate for months. The multiple gold chains with designer bags and top of the range phones. Debt keeps the merry-go-round turning. Currently flaunting it in Starbucks Reserve @ OneSiam with coffee and a egg butty. 1 1
BarBoy Posted December 21, 2024 Posted December 21, 2024 Never. I always wear scruffy clothes and a bog standard Casio watch. The thais can't see me coming!
quake Posted December 21, 2024 Posted December 21, 2024 Never. We don't want Noi / somchai the tealeaf round. I don't wear any jewelry at all. The wife very little. Money /assists kept outside Thailand. Happy days. 1
Isaan sailor Posted December 21, 2024 Posted December 21, 2024 When I lived in America, I followed the advice of the book “The Millionaire Next Door”: modest house, used cars, etc. Divorce changed my life, so I moved to Thailand, Now living with my Thai wife—we have a two story house in an Isaan farming village, and we just bought a new Ranger. Can’t hide things here… 1
Popular Post khunPer Posted December 21, 2024 Popular Post Posted December 21, 2024 It's simple: People that needs to flash wealth are not real wealthy folks, real wealthy people don't need to flash it... 1 1 1
