UK Crime Drama

It's probably me but many times I have a hard time understanding what is being said on UK series. Even if I replay that part again at high volume I still don't always know what is being said. I don't think it is because of slang that they are using. I am from the USA.

The problem I have with sub title is that I don't always need them, But I always find myself reading them.  That distracts me from the action.

It's not you, as I need subtitles when watching UK or AU movies or series.  Or I'll miss a lot.  Some, I can't even follow, as don't understand most of what they say, as accent is so hard.   So don't bother watching, as I'll miss most of it, while reading.

I need subtitles on all movies now 🙁

Tried ear phones and ear buds but they all seem to simply increase the sound without cleaning up the speech, also they cut out the sound so wife doesn't get anything at all.

So we learn to live with it as we get older....

I did have some problems with hearing speech clearly and I tried some headphones, but no improvement........then a friend lent me a pair of his old Grado Labs Blu-Tooth headphones and everything became clear (literally). He has said that I can have them provided I change the battery, so I have one on order and have sought out my soldering iron!!!

PS. I have read that headphones connected with a lead (wire) give the best sound, but so far am happy with these. Now, the latest version of these headphones is very expensive although the older models can be found online and are not so expensive.

I am from UK. Regional UK accents are difficult to understand on top of a complete lack of annunciation. I use subtitles for many UK & US programmes or movies. It always strikes me that although accents are more authentic, they do restrict the audience, both for speakers of English as their mother tongue, and for those which it is not.

I'm guessing that you're from London / South East area? 🤔

I’m from M25 - I never have any issue understanding any regional accent on TV. I do find, after slowing down my speech to be understood by locals and other expats that sometimes i just turn off when i hear fast speech on some shows, maybe im a little tired, maybe I just stop the show and rewatch another day.

No doubt many have seen the movie called, "Alive" about the plane that crashed in the Andes, carrying a

Uruguayan rugby team and the trials and tribulations they had to go through to get about 17 of them to survive and I thought it was a good movie.

However there is now a new movie out about the very same thing which received a standing ovation in a recent showing/release. It goes into more detail about the team themselves, and also about the decision they had to make with regard to resorting to cannibalism.

The movie is called, "Society of the Snow" (can be found on 1337x.to) and it's about 2 1/2 hours long, and if you can find the right movie, it has dubbed English as well as English subtitles.

As for me, it was enjoyable and not sure if I enjoyed this one or the previous version more, would be good to get some feedback on it as we are all different.

Just watched "Alive" (again) and have reconsidered my original post and for me the movie "Alive" is the winner!!

I've just finished Task season 1 and enjoyed it. It was recommended by @gargamon earlier in this thread and mentioned by a few others. It's on TheRARBG and possibly other sites.

The 2005 movie A History of Violence caught my attention from one of those "best movies" lists. I thought it was damn good and think it still would have wide appeal to those that don't need to only watch current stuff.

Four part Italian series focused on the police investigations to find a true story serial killer of copulating young couples in cars over many years.

The tone was very different from Anglo and Scandanavian approaches to crime stories. I was intrigued with the cultural differences about how the police went about trying, emphasis on trying, to find the monster.

Not sure if it qualifies as a show, but I've been watching "Baumgartner Restoration" YouTube videos with my kid and they are fascinating.

Dude restores old paintings step by step. The videos are about a half hour, and he does one painting start to finish, so each show is complete. You do not have to watch them in order, and you get to see the before and after of every painting. Both the process and the results are amazing. The process is tedious, but the shows move along well.

Another movie which was mentioned a short while back, is called, "Interstellar", so I thought I'd have another look at it and although the special effects were really good, the plot got lost in itself (in my opinion) and I'm not sure that folks watching it would be really into the effects of "time travel", third dimension, the effects of travelling down a black hole, gravity and its effect in/on the movie and a few other aspects of it.

I certainly understood a lot more of it on my second viewing, but it became so tedious later on that I was tempted to switch it off on several occasions!!

Never mind, now that I've watched it again I can put it on my list of "don't watch again".

Yeah - Interstellar is one of those movies I roll out every couple of years. It's just a good movie.

Wow!  I'm impressed.  The producers cranked out Season 4 in a hurry.  Excellent show.  Jeremy Renner rocks as "Mike" as usual.
