A Thai pickup driver physically assaulted a university student in the northern province of Chiang Rai because the student stopped his motorcycle to allow vehicles in the roundabout to pass first.

 

The university student, Pattanasak Sanya, shared details of the incident on his Facebook page yesterday. He began his account by stating that he was in the right.

 

“I stopped to let vehicles in the roundabout pass according to the law but ended up being attacked.”

 

Pattanasak explained that the pickup driver was angry that he let other vehicles go first and he honked at Pattanasak and revved his engine in anger. Pattanasak and his girlfriend turned around and informed the pickup driver.

 

“Let the vehicles in the roundabout go first.”

 

Pattanasak said the pickup driver then lowered his window and verbally abused him and his girlfriend with vulgar language and To avoid escalating the conflict, Pattanasak decided to ride away.

 

 

However, the pickup driver pursued them, driving dangerously close to their motorcycle, seemingly attempting to cause a crash. The pickup eventually cut in front of the motorcycle, forcing them to stop and the driver then exited his vehicle and physically assaulted Pattanasak.

 

According to Pattanasak, he sustained injuries, including cuts to his mouth and eyebrow, and his glasses were broken. The attacker also accused him of being disrespectful, citing the age difference between them.

 

Pattanasak and his girlfriend filed a complaint against the pickup driver at Mueang Chiang Rai Police Station.

 

The attacker reportedly turned himself in later that day. He admitted to assaulting Pattanasak but claimed that the student used vulgar language towards him first. The man declined to give an interview to news agencies, stating he was not ready.

 

The pickup was transferred to the provincial land transport office, as several parts of the vehicle were found to be illegally modified.

 

Police are expected to charge the pickup driver after the results of Pattanasak’s medical examination are released.

 

The pickup driver may face imprisonment of up to two years, a fine of up to 40,000 baht, or both, for violating Section 295 of the Criminal Code: physically assaulting another person.

These pickup drivers are a constant nuisance throughout the country.

Sounds as though the pickup driver deserves jail for assault. 

Roundabouts have stop signs at the roads joining it, and even signs telling drivers, in writing, the right of way is for people ON the roundabout. 

I think roundabouts need traffic lights now.

I have two roundabout near my house, I would say only about 10% of drivers understand the rules of roundabout use, that could be fixed with enforcement, but TIT.

Such pickup drivers are a plague in Thailand. If someone wants to lecture other road users in Thailand, it becomes ridiculous🤪🤪🙄

Would have been better to have stayed quiet and read the highway code... the student was correct

Yeah, it appears Thai's have no idea how to act or use Roundabouts, Stop Signs, Red Lights, Yield Signs, Stop Lines, Solid lines, Hash-Marked areas, Zebra Crossing areas, Yellow-and-White marked curbs, Red-and-White marked curbs, or any other traffic control signs, laws, or rules. You might wonder how they passed an actual road test, but they never took one, and slept through any videos. It would be the equivalent of walking into a classroom full of 10 year-olds and handing them the keys to a car, and saying have fun.

Rounabouts are much too complicated for the average Thai pickup driver to comprehend.

I actually had cops stopping for me ON the roundabout once... I refused to move. After a moment their window rolled down, I got a thumbs up and they moved on 🤦🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️ 

The whole point of roundabouts is not to have stop signs/signals 

There is a roundabout near my house and i avoid it like the plague. You would not believe the traffic jams is causes!

The British equivalent is 'white van man'.

Roundabouts should have two lanes in order to be efficient especially on highways, the new roundabout at the cm-doisaket and third ring highway junction is a one lame lane roundabout and get backed up during rush hour. They’re currently building a new roundabout at the cm-sankamphang and third ring highway junction, it will get another smirky scoff from me if it turns out to be a single lame lane roundabout 

The average IQ in Thailand is 85. They are quite able to cope with the world and appear fairly normal, but at high stress situations, and in the application of complex rules, they will struggle.

 

Their frustration and annoyance at being unable to deal with the world presents itself as violence.

As I keep repeating, all these fake words of politeness, is all that they are.

The sooner the Thai culture gets rid of the annoying sounds of Ka and Khap, the better.

So that they can start learning how to show politeness.

They are brainwashed into believing that these noises are good enough to show politeness.

Obviously very wrong.

Both of them near me are 3 lane roundabouts, but watching Thai's navigate them is mind-boggling, they haven't the foggiest clue how to use them properly.

Thais are lacking the xRnZ gene which is required to navigate roundabouts. This leads to roundabout chaos at every such junction in Thailand. This is a fact.

Well, most aren't taught or know which way to give way to at all   They think first in first served no matter what direction. It's just lack of education of traffic laws and lack of enforcement of traffic laws. Lack of care of anything.

This is the crux of it. the Thailand of the past clashes with a new era.

once upon a time in a Thailand not so far away, the driver would have deserved deference solely on the basis of his age.

i once worked in companies like that, but never for long.

That may be the case (although I think he's probably lying), but that doesn't extend to being able to command younger people to ride out into oncoming traffic which has right of way.
