Price of a cup coffee

Featured Replies

It seems many Thai don't (want to) understand the differences in quality and ambience.

They hear that someone sells a high-quality espresso in a nice pace for >100B and then somehow they "think" they can sell a low-quality coffee for 80B.

But obviously if nobody would buy it then maybe they would think about their decisions - maybe.

Starbucks is 185 for a venti.   what's your point?   if you can't afford 80 baht for a coffee then you really are in dire straits.   regards, Elvis from Tupelo.

Well said.  80 baht for a decent cup of coffee is a great price.  I sometimes wonder if people think they're living in a 3rd world country!

Could be they do it because some people (Farangs) don't bother to look at the prices, thus they are easy pickin's to be taken advantage of. I've had it happen to me as well.

Very possible. Could be since I don't eat foreigner type restaurant cuisine very often I'm just out of touch with current prices.

You are right that 80 Baht is a good price for a decent cup of coffee. This of course means brewed with real beans.

Instant in 7 Eleven is 15 baht, that's about right. In Pattaya, say Benjamit or hut next to Nikom Court, ground coffee 60 baht.

I usually pay 40-60 baht out of town for good ground coffee

in the village and at other placing in Lamphun's market districts I can get a good cup of steaming fresh coffee for 20 THB.

Arigato coffee is 30 baht in Bangkok and pretty good, I get mine the Tops bakery

Is that that thai sack coffee? or ground coffee from a machine? decent ground coffee costs around 10 baht for the beans alone

Easier to go to 7/11.  3 in 1 coffee costs maybe 15 THB and the packages are usually enough for two cup-fulls of the small cups they provide.

You're probably right. A 30 baht toasties and a 15 baht coffee would've been better.

Never bought a cup of coffee (or tea for that matter) in my life......other than tea with a full English

I really don't understand people buying just a drink.

Never bought any kind of drink come to think of it....other than alcoholic ones.

So, yesterday I arrived at tuk com too early so walked over Soi Bukhao for a breakfast. Something I never do, usually I have morning beers. I don't look at prices. Any how one small cup of instant coffee was 80 baht. I don't understand the business sense.  Why would you do that?

Was it (very) touristy place?

If so, makes a perfect sense.

Often common perception of the 1st world tourists among Thai people(especially those in touristy business): They are wealthy and hang the price while their holidays.

So such people display quite high price(targetting Farang temporary visitors).

The same happening in some part  of Chiang Mai(limited area of high concentration of short term visitors).

The level of food otherwise sold at 40B or so, often priced at 80-90. Or even more.

Such establishments are usually for the foreign travelers who will stay here only for a short while.

While locals and street-wise expats often avoid these overpriced shops.

Nearly 20 years ago, I have drunk a glass of orange juice priced at B240(in Bkk's Khao San Rd area).

Fortunately, it was on my friend a lot wealthier(earning $5000/month) than me...

Not that different from bars and places that nowadays think to still get away with these 7/11 bread breakfasts, with a tiny 'glass' of orange juice and 'instant toilet' coffee. To then charge like 140-160 baht for the set as well lol.

I guess the reason it works is that many oldie suckers still pay for it. Else it was already better for the same as it is in quite a few places.

you sure it's not
"women ripping me off"?

80 b is a rip.  Amazon is good for what, 50b?

Many other shops fresh ground for 40.

I have a hard time paying more than ฿60 for a Cappuccino or ฿50 for and Americano.   Best local Cappuccino is only ฿35, but don't go there often, as they don't have pastry, and nothing to 'see' there.

Since brother is here, somewhere, next week I might actually pop into StarCrap @ ICONSIAM, and more for the view than the coffee.  Think a Cappuccino is ฿165, although, it's almost 3X the size of what locals serve up.

They're disgusting,  Sugar 42% in those 3 in1 packs.

Yes, why would you?

If you mosey on over to the Tesco strip mall, right next to the arcade and the baf'rooms, they have coin-operated coffee dispensers that charge either 5 or 10 baht for a cuppa joe!

Then you can sit in the food court for FREE, and enjoy the lukewarm air conditioning for FREE!  You can even use their napkins and utensils for FREE, followed by a trip to the john, also for FREE!

Livin' life to the max!

Everyone knows that the absolute WORST coffee in Thailand is Starbucks, and the absolute best is at seven. Even the seating at seven is better, and they often have friendly dogs to keep you company on the steps.

IMO there should be an "f" instead of a "b" in Star*****. As in what it does to coffee.

So weak, it should be put on life support. Dishwater.

I suppose, like some other American companies, they think quantity can be substituted for quality.

Yeah, seven is so much better, and the dogs are great as well.

Only stupid people trade there.

My best coffee place is in Huay Sak, on the road to Thoeng. 35 baht for a really good coffee.

Wow, that's 1000kms from Pattaya.

35 baht for a really good coffee, I'm going for the drive

Where in Soi Buakhao was that? I've never seen instant coffee for 80 THB anywhere.

150baht at True building in Bangkok for a mocha!!! More expensive than back home! And more amazingly a queue if Thai people ordering! Wow!

To enjoy the river view, you can go through Starbuck on the left , or enter Napalai Terrace through the small door on the right.

sometimes you are paying for the seat,
many places do not want a seat and likely an entire table of 4
taken up for long by sone person just buying one coffee
it also makes the set meals with coffee included look more attractive
