Are U.S. expats shielded from the massive Trump Tariff Tax Raise on Americans?

Featured Replies

Hear me out here.

This topic is for discussion.

So as we know Trump has now isolated the USA from the entire world (except for Russia, NK, etc.) with his totally insane massive tax hike on all but wealthy Americans. He's killed globalism from a U.S. perspective.

HOWEVER, trade will go on as before between all other countries.

So lets take an example.

Sneakers made in Vietnam now much more expensive for Americans living in the U.S.

That's the tax hike Trump in his infinite idiocy has mandated.

But will they be more expensive for American expats elsewhere?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it doesn't seem so.

Also traveling Americans will be able to stock up on cheaper goods when they travel, but then they would have to deal with possible customs penalties on reentry.

So why am I posting this exactly?

This new reality has me wondering -- will the Trump regime realize that expats are outside his massive tax hike bubble and in response craft a financial penalty targeted at expats?

I know some will say that's paranoid, but nobody can confidently say that the Trump regime is not capable of such a thing.

No. You're just repeating Trump's big lie. Shame on you. The numbers they came up with have NOTHING to do with actual tariff rates. They're a formula based on trade imbalances. I get it. You're obviou

Jake Broe explains it all for you in case you don't realize yet that Trump's massive tax hike for most Americans except the wealthy has NOTHING to do with the other nation's ACTUAL tariff rates.

Trump believes this move will bring jobs to the US, something he wants to accomplish. It is not designed as some sort of punishment, although anyone who understands economics knows that any action that benefits some people (bring back manufacturing jobs) also hurts some people (increased prices for tariffed products). Trump has far too much on his plate to spend time worrying about a few expats. I am more concerned about the financial pressures on social security causing unpopular changes that affect expats.

Another thought.

Assuming the biggest market for Vietnamese made sneakers is the US obviously many will refuse to buy them with new Trump Tax prices. So considering normal supply and demand pressures wouldn't that mean that those sneakers in Thailand should likely go down in price?

He may take away social security and charge every expat a personal tariff of $10,000 if they ever return to the U.S.  After all, you are here collecting SS and it's yearly COLA without spending any of it in the U.S.   Makes sense.

Best to prepare now.

The newly announced universal Trump tariffs (https://taxfoundation.org/blog/trump-reciprocal-tariffs-calculations/) on April 2 will raise $1.5 trillion in revenue over the next decade and shrink US GDP by 0.4 percent. The April 2 escalation comes in addition to previously announced tariffs, which will raise $1.3 in revenue over the next decade and shrink US GDP by 0.3 percent. Altogether, Trump’s tariffs will raise nearly $2.9 trillion in revenue over the next decade and reduce US GDP by 0.7 percent, all before foreign retaliation.

Trump absolutely hates everyone and everything outside the USA, and that includes all expats.  MAGA fans who post here....yes, he hates you too even though you worship him.

If Trump thinks about expats, he will certainly try to find a way to screw them over like he does everyone he hates.  Luckily for us though, we don't seem to be on his radar for now, and it looks like he's got a lot of other stuff to worry about with a possible stock market crash on the way.

Dont be surprised if the expats will be targeted in round 2.This person is a wery bad human being and he don't care about other then himself and his family. The sons are bad and evil at the same level as him.

Here's 2 of your talking points. Both of which are invalid.  There's nothing reciprocal about those tariffs. They weren't computed on the  basis of reciprocity.  Tariffs rates are mostly very low among developed nations. And Trump actually imposed tariffs of 10% on countries with which the US has a trade surplus.

They are not reciprocal Tariffs.   Australia has a Trade Deficit with the United States.  Australia has zero tariffs in place on US products.    But is it with a 10% tariff on its exports to the United States.   Australia has made it clear it is not joining the madness and won’t be reciprocating with tariffs on US imports.  That’s just an extra Tax on Australian families.

Apparently big pharma doesn’t like Australias Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme which subsidies medicines to millions of Australians and Mr Trump and his cronies thought this unfair.

So no. They are not reciprocal Tariffs - they are just plain dumb.

No. Trump has brought those that will listen the truth how the world is actually working against its own people.

Wildly misleading. Just googled about buying US beef in Oz. No tariff per se but some bs about not allowing US beef in for some other reason. It is still protectionism. Same with US cars, bring them into Oz no worries Bruce, but then must be converted to RHD at major expense. More protectionism.

I start to seriously doubt the IQ of many forum leftists here who just parrot fake news narratives. Oh but its just for safety the ABC watchers cry, jog on fellas.

Though I know you're not a fan of POTUS, I still think you give him too much credit for not being an absolute idiot.

I will bet he thinks when he imposes tariffs on Vietnamese goods, those tariffs exist whether Vietnam sells to the US, Japan, or Pitcairn Island. I do believe the clown is that dumb.

Is everyone in the equity market one of those low IQ lefty Socialists, because the market certainly isn't of the opinion you are about the effectiveness of the tariffs.

If you know more than everyone else, you must be, like, uber superduper bigly unbelieaveably rich, like a kind of Croesus who makes Elon Musk and Putin jealous with your staggering wealth, like nobody has ever seen before. Some people are saying the richest ever.
