Thailand makes incredible amounts of money from this and the ridiculous "re-entry permits". Western countries need ways to punish them for abusing our citizens.

Oh well, maybe Trump will add that to his 36% tariff on Thailand.... But since he doesn't give a rat's @ss about the little guy, including the US Thai-based professor who coincidentally was being arrested when the Thai tariffs were announced (how 'Chinese' of them), I somehow doubt he cares about the price of your re-entry visa to Thailand.

(Edit to add that Biden Admin might have protested the US Prof's arrest; highly doubt Trump's Admin will even notice it).

Why not just stamp her passport and stick here on the plane with a 10 year ban? let somebody else deal with her,

For goodness sake - she broke the law. Why should she be let off? As far as I know, the overstay law applies everywhere in Thailand. Not just in Phuket.

  • They make up their own laws in Phuket and based on dozens of such reports - it is designed to inflict maximum penalty, pain and cost  on the overstayer. Remember - this demonstrates exactly how m

It is not clear from the story whether the woman had the 20,000 Baht required to clear the overstay fine.

If she didn't, she is going to be arrested and then go to IDC, which seems to be what is happening.

If she did, then she is very unlucky and the law seems to have been applied punitively.

These stories only seem to emanate from Phuket Airport. The only thing I can draw from this tale, since details are missing, is if you are on overstay and intend to fly out by paying your overstay fine at the airport, never leave through Phuket Airport.

What about those automated gated ? Last time I was directed to exit immigration on departure thru those automated gates. No check or stamp. So that gives an open option for the immigration fellow on next visit to start to make a fuss and falsely claim I have overstayed ? The more it goes, the more tourists never wish to come back to Thailand if it's just to get harassed or cheated all over.

Don't crap on their laws and you won't get these problems

Thats the only thing I can think of, they dont have the 20 grand, but is she doesn't have it now then she will never have it,

Self-inflicted wounds, who cares.

Why would she need money for a flight, the op literally says " at the airport’s international terminal. The woman was preparing to depart the country "?

Because if you don't have the 20K, you miss your flight.

Draconian and insane. Punitive tariffs should be assessed until they loosen their grip.

Best to obey the law then.

She appears to be of African descent. Thai racism, no doubt.

Dumb comment

Could just be that she spent those 207 days baking in the sun.

Show me 1 link with the story that this nonsense ever happened.

What are the actual figures that you are claiming.

I guess she could just get a new passport and even change her first name.

Nope..  Biotmetrics - she'd have to also change her DOB, her Nationality, her name for that to potentially work.

A completely flawed comment which highlights a complete lack of understanding.

Your comments suggests the immigration system in Thailand is antiquated and analogue relying 'only' on passport stamps and that Immigration are using e-gates to 'catch people out and profit'...  which isn't the case at all.

All details are registered in the Immigration database - every entry and exit is logged digitally whether using the e-gates or a 'desk'....

When you go through an automated gate , it "stamps" you out on the computer .

Immigration are aware that you departed

Wonder is she didn't know to pay fine before she left or if she thought just save herself some money by not doing so.

Why does she appear to be of African descent? Jarvis racism, no doubt.

The obvious answer for overstay was so she could get a suntan.  The article does not mention if she had or did not have the funds to pay the fine. If she had the funds to pay the fine they should have collected the fine, sent  her on her way and ban her for five years. Immigration department picks easy targets. No funds she goes through the normal channels.

Totally agree. Just ban her for the next 10 years and deport her. Problem solved. Surely, immigration has plenty of other things to take care off

Nice.

4 Goons, standing behind a silly middle aged women on overstay.

Go there lads.

I am shocked that someone could possibly overstay their visa in Thailand.

How on earth was she able to stay here for so long without doing a 90 day report?

Why would you want to do a 90-day report if you are on overstay

Where is your thinking
