Trump spares smartphones, computers, other electronics from China tariffs

Current POTUS only has the power to enact tariffs because he declared a bogus wartime Emergency. And even the bogus emergency doesn't give him the power to enact tariffs -- it only specifies embargoes.

Every president in my lifetime has stretched their authority in a similar manner.  If it wasn't the Bad Orange Man, the MSM would be shrugging it off as "business as usual".

Joe Biden tried that with student loans and the Supreme Court shot him down on a doctrine the conservatives invented called Major Questions. I wonder if they'll do the same to Trump.

Probably not, since the facts and circumstances of the cases are completely different.  I don't know of any entity that's even brought this one to lower courts, much less SCOTUS.

Gawd Jerry stop it I didn’t know ya had it in ya lmao 🤣 pretty pathetic on old trumps part what a train wreck of a president anyway thanks for the humor in these fraught times.

Thanks. It's just part of a coping mechanism for me.

But the most prescient thing I have read is this from the 23 Nobel economics Prize winners even though, yeah, I know they lost:

Among the most important determinants of economic success are the rule of law and economic and political certainty, and Trump threatens all of these.

How do the facts and circumstances differ? Like Biden, he invoked a law that makes no mention of the justification he used to invoke it.

As for you not knowing about "any entity that's even brought this one to lower courts, much less SCOTUS." ....you need to widen your news sources

You also need to understand that lawsuits generally don't begin at the Supreme Court level. And when I say "generally" I mean virtually always.

It's the response you deserve. Nice attempt at being coy. Stick to posting about trump.

Thanks for the order. I'll just offer you a suggestion: stick to the issues and stop sharing your feelings or the lack of them with the rest of us.

I know a lot of liberals who will be happy about the iPhone news.

Is that because only liberals know how to use smart phones?

Hashtag not a single mobile phone is manufactured in USA anymore.

Is this a concession that Trumpists are not happy about the iPhone news? That they concede that Trump blinked first?

He didn't just blink, he caved, then peed in his pants.

You should take up a job as standup comedian.

Trump is the grifter in chief, and has this proven once again with his exemptions for his friends that handed him a lot of money during his campaign. And also with his crypto business that is now taking shape.

Good info.  I wasn't aware that any lawsuits had been filed.  It will be interesting to see the results as they wind their way up the judicial ladder.

WASHINGTON/WEST PALM BEACH, Florida, April 12 (Reuters) - President Donald Trump's administration granted exclusions from steep reciprocal tariffs to smartphones, computers and some other electronics imported largely from China, providing a big break to tech companies like Apple that rely on imported products.

The U.S. CBP listed 20 product categories, including the broad 8471 code for all computers, laptops, disc drives and automatic data processing. It also included semiconductor devices, equipment, memory chips and flat panel displays.

Trump's action also excludes the specified electronics from his 10% "baseline" tariffs on goods from most countries other than China, easing import costs for semiconductors from Taiwan and Apple iPhones produced in India.

So everyone bitched & cried about the tariffs when they were put on, he reversed some and 'he caved'... so you want the tariff or not.... or as I expect you will slag him off no matter what he does.

It depends on the issue and the extent to which the court wants to get involved.  There are to bright lines.

Look up the Supreme Court and the "Major Questions" doctrine.  Along similar lines, look op the "Political Question" doctrine.  Then, look up "separation of powers."  Sometimes they can't figure out a way for the judiciary to effectively manage an issue, other times they know they shouldn't be getting involved.

'don't have to look it up -- it is referenced in the case:

First, the China Executive Orders are ultra vires because the
IEEPA does not authorize a president to impose tariffs. Basic
tools of statutory construction dictate this conclusion. The
Supreme Court’s major questions doctrine confirms it. Because
the Executive Orders present a question of “vast economic and
political significance,” the major questions doctrine requires the
President to show that the IEEPA “clearly” authorizes him to
impose tariffs. The President cannot make that showing.

Nothing to do with tariffs,he got reeled in by his billionaire friends (bosses) and as a good little puppy he immediately

did as he is told.

Good boy Donny!

He was so confident about saying the US does not need anything from any other country.

I am against any kind of non negotiated tariffs.

So tell me,why did he cancel the tariffs on this?

  • Popular Post

But there is still the baseline of 20%, or is it 10% now? It seems even customs aren't sure anymore.

If Trump had gone about these tariffs in a slow and steady way, he may of garnered some respect and possibly achieved something.

But no, he had to go about it like some crazed chimpanzee on acid until no one knows what the hell is going on.

I really can't see any business setting up in the US in this climate. All tariffs might be cancelled next week for all we know.

These tariffs will do absolutely nothing to improve the standard of living of Americans. Business leaders, economics professors, Wall Street traders, bankers are lining up to tell you that.

Donald Trump was elected on a platform of reducing taxes.

Tariffs are a tax paid by American importers and passed on to American consumers. This is the biggest tax rise imposed on the American public since the Second World War. It is definitely not going to be paid for by China or any other country.

The spin coming out of the White House is a massive hoax. This is nothing but a huge tax rise.

He can flip many times over but a lot of the damage is already done. There is an enormous loss of confidence in the current US government.

As more and more products that are used by millions found to be on the tariff list, Trump will most likely exempt those too and before you know it almost everything from there will be exempt or China will continue to reap trillions on those products.  Meanwhile all the things the US was sending to them have now been replaced by the products from Canada, japan, S. Korea or other countries.

Actually the most appealing part of his platform was the pledge to reduce inflation and to bring on strong economic growth.  Most Americans are not in favor of reducing taxes on the wealthy. Quite the opposite.

That may be, but we can only hope something works.  Maybe not for me, and maybe not for you, depending on how old you are, but for future generations, I'm sure they would appreciated living in a civilized society.
