Well the last time I switched US passports I was asked for the old one at Thai immigration.
The OP is living in Thailand on annual extensions from Non O.
After he attends immigration for transfer of visa information and any relevant stamps ...eg a reentry permit then for future travel he does not need to travel with both passports.
Tattooed Tourist Assaulted in Songkran Soaking Incident

A Songkran celebration on Pattaya's Soi 6 erupted into violence last night when a foreign tourist, attempting to avoid water due to a fresh tattoo, was assaulted. Police are currently hunting for the assailants responsible for the altercation, which ended with the tourist being hospitalised.
