Substandard Rebar Found in Collapsed Bangkok Building's Construction

Recent tests by the Iron and Steel Institute of Thailand have revealed that rebar samples collected from the collapsed State Audit Office (SAO) building site are substandard. Spokesman for the Industry Ministry, Pongpol Yodmuangcharoen, confirmed today that the tested samples, which include 12mm, 20mm, and 32mm rebar, did not meet the required rigorous standards.

Following this initial finding, additional samples were collected on April 11th. These 40 sections, consisting of eight different rebar sizes, were dispatched for testing to evaluate their compliance with the Thailand Industrial Standard Institute (TISI) criteria.

Pongpol emphasized the clarity of the testing protocol, which aims to ensure all construction materials meet established safety standards. Should any rebar type or brand be deemed substandard, accountability will extend to the manufacturers, potentially resulting in the revocation of production licenses and the closure of their production facilities.

The scrutiny of Xin Ke Yuan, a Chinese manufacturer operating in Thailand, has intensified. Some of their rebar used in the SAO building's construction were already identified as falling short of TISI standards. These developments highlight significant safety concerns, prompting calls for stricter regulation and oversight within the construction industry to prevent future structural failures.

Whilst the focus has been on rebar quality, they still need to establish that the poor quality was the significant factor in the buildings collapse. What about construction, design, quality of concrete......are these all being looked at....or could that raise too many questions and put Thais rather than the Chinese in the search lights?

You would think that there would be a Government dept , that would

do testing at the manufacturing plants ,to find inferior steel products

before it gets out into the market , than find it after the building has

fallen down ,

The walls of the elevator shaft, a key component for stability, were reduced from 35cm to 25cm so that the hallways would meet the minimum width required by law. Hallway width easily checked, elevator wall width not so much.

I believe this would fall under the purview of the President of the State Audit Commission and the Auditor General of the State Audit Office.

In one of the most 'extreme examples if irony that could be encountered, it was their very building that collapsed.

In the aftermath, a staggering amount of mismanagement and corruption has come to light.

So who will be held liable for the deaths of dozens of people.

No need to answer ill show myself out.

There is it is the Thai Industrial Standards Institute (TISI) the same mob that did the testing here.

Barking up the wrong tree there.

The State Audit Office (Thai: สำนักงานการตรวจเงินแผ่นดิน), previously known as the Office of the Auditor General, is an independent, constitutionally mandated state agency of Thailand. It is tasked with examining the accounts and finances of the government to ensure transparency and to prosecute financial fraud.

Awesome, thanks for adding the Thai script. I would have struggled to understand otherwise. Do you actually understand what you have posted?

It is my understanding that the Office of the Auditor General (OAG) / State Audit Office is responsible for auditing government spending and ensuring that funds allocated for public infrastructure, including government buildings, are used appropriately and transparently. It investigates any irregularities or misuse of public funds.

The reason the building collapsed is ultimately due to corruption and misuse of public funds.

Re Bar quality is a glaring quality consideration for the most obvious of reasons however, I would venture to say that even more to the point is, the quality of the cement should come under scrutiny too.

You're laughing at facts because they came from the wrong logo? That’s not critical thinking, it’s intellectual inbreeding.

Is that all you have?

So the facts are irrelevant? It's not an opinion piece. It was reporting a year long study by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute. You can look it up yourself if you dispute any of the findings, it is there on the internet.

But of course you would rather just put your fingers in your ears and believe the anti-China propaganda that is prevalent. Definitely don't consider asking questions, researching or having a discussion, just point at the messenger and laugh - that'll get you far.

Up to you.

Yes, forgot, let me add that to the list: China is also ahead in non-nuclear hydrogen bomb 1,000 degree fireball unleashing technology.

I would agree, but you can not assume that inspectors have not been there to check this before and passed with their envelopes tucked away.

well my first thought would be if the Chinese used substandard materials for this GOVERNMENT project, what about the private condos being built all over Thailand.  This same builder probably has and is working on many projects here.  If the guy in charge is a member of the Chinese State Government, does he have immunity?  Will they let him go home?

The time has come,’ the Walrus said,
      To talk of many things:
Of shoes — and ships — and sealing-wax —
Of cabbages — and kings —
And why the sea is boiling hot —
      And whether pigs have wings.’

I hope the involvement of Chineese developers will be displayed in large print on future sales promotion literature for new condominiums.

Don't forget that one of their first steel checks they did they said that it came from a factory/supplier that had already been closed for substandard quality previously ffs!

Apparently the rebar came from a Chinese owned/run factory that had been previously noted for using substandard steel... I guess the price was right?

next would be to check the concrete to see if that was undercut as-well.

Chinese rebar baby. Just what a building needs.

"No! Really???"  Wow - Surprise surprise surprise.

I think their phones suck too.

I tossed my expensive Oppo after I got a message stating that my camera didn't work.  The selfie camera still caught my image..

My conspiratorial mind wondered why that?

I resourced with a Samsung and a new sim card.
