A coup would do away with all the nice things coming from democracy, like taxation of remittances, re-criminalisation of cannabis, taxation of world-wide income etc. Let's hope there will be no coup for sure.

I think it's very possible. But it would be a worse disaster than before on a number of levels. First, this time people would fight back - the disenfranchised majority - especially those who had the government they voted for stolen away from them in broad daylight have really now come to understand how the wealthy establishment, the monopolists, the royalists and their rubber stamp courts, and other pliable 'commissions', etc., are designed specifically to work against them. As someone said there is no longer a moral compass or saintly figure to cow them. Second, the economic future is already so bad that a coup would just turn this into another Burma. Third, much of the industrialized world would alienate the coup leaders. And finally, this time, a coup would risk civil war.

The people do not elect the PM.

 

They vote for a political party and if that party wins the most seats but less than an absolute majority it is offered first choice to form a coalition government with another party or parties.

 

If they still cannot form a coalition government after a period of time (I think it is 30 days but I am not sure) the party with the next highest number of seats is given the chance to form a coalition government.

 

If they are successful the the largest party in the coalition offers a name (or names) to be voted on by that party alone, to become the PM. 

What a f#%*^@(     dreamer.

 

There certainly are some idiots in positions of authority in this country.

 

But...   maybe this is a warning of what is about to come.

Considering the current state of the Thai economy and growing discontent in the middle military ranks, the next coup d'etat .....

"...and growing discontent..."  Should red 'growing extreme discontent' and the PM has no idea how to handle it and has now cancelled the 10,000Baht election promise and now travelling so too busy to fix the economy.   

It's pretty much time for the next one.

Oh, I don't know. I rather liked the one that happened in October, 1973. Unfortunately that led to the Counter Revolution in 1976, which the Thai don't like to talk about, but which eventually led to Prem's appointment as Prime Minister. And Anand was a very good Prime Minister.

My reading is that part is smaller, but better equipped and trained, effectively a mobile powerful roughly  two brigade sized group. The rest (larger) part is made up from immobile barely trained units, manned by uninterested conscripts and equipped with Vietnam era "hand me downs".

Hmm, don’t know about that. There are a lot of upset folk regards T being allowed back, but Thais are still largely apathetic if it did happen. There would be anger and protests for sure, but beyond that don’t reckon you’d see millions on the streets.

I love the Shins.  Most Thai people do, as well.
