Another British guy smuggling cannabis out of Thailand.

This is out of control now. The absolute garbage reputation Thailand is taking with international headlines like this is out of control. This was once a proud country that the world respected for it's hard stance on drugs. It's honestly becoming the gutter with all the headlines.

Surely they need to be better detection at their home airports. Second, they really need to seriously look again at the marijuana laws bought in. Already i know many chinese tourists, families, decent folk looking to other places like Vietnam as they don't like whats going in Thailand.

Stopover with drugs in your suitcase....I read this all the time....how dumb can you be.

Why don't you spend more money on a ticket if you want to bring drugs over.

If it's being ran by criminal enterprises then yes it's dangerous.

Why exactly ? Dangerous for whom ? It's not heroin or meth. And what does this say about the Thai government then?😄

A 31-year-old British man was apprehended for attempting to smuggle 11.3 kilogrammes of cannabis from Bangkok to Newcastle, marking the latest incident in a series of drug smuggling attempts linked to Thailand's routes. The man was intercepted at Vienna International Airport on May 27 during a transit stop on his journey from Bangkok to Newcastle via Frankfurt.

The suspect was caught with the cannabis cleverly concealed in 13 vacuum-sealed packs, hidden beneath layers of clothing in his suitcase – a stash valued at approximately £95,000 (4.2 million baht) on the street. The suitcase, checked in from Bangkok and tagged for Newcastle, drew attention during the stop in Vienna, leading to his arrest.

Austrian customs officers acted swiftly, escorting the man, who remains unidentified, into preventive custody at Korneuburg Prison. Despite the evidence against him, he has reportedly made no statement and refused to confess his involvement in the smuggling attempt. The Korneuburg public prosecutor’s office is now investigating the case, exploring potential connections to organised drug trafficking networks.

This arrest highlights a concerning trend, as smugglers increasingly exploit routes from Thailand to Europe. British nationals, sometimes unsuspecting or knowingly recruited, have been ensnared in these operations, underscoring the growing international concern over drug trafficking.

While the full extent of the networks involved remains unclear, the case underscores the need for vigilance and coordination among international customs and law enforcement agencies to combat the illicit drug trade. As investigations continue, authorities are hopeful that they will uncover more about the broader trafficking operation and put measures in place to disrupt these dangerous activities.

Thailand getting a bad rep? (read headline again). I think most of us intelligent people are thinking what an idiot for smuggeling this <deleted>!   You can't blame Thailand for someone being stupid and greedy!

If guilty don't you think he should sit in jail?  Or just blame thailand for making it legal and not asking him at the departure lounge if he stuffed his suitcase with weed.

You can blame Thailand, this never happened before the obscene decision to allow the use of marijuana for " medical purposes" was allowed. Another dopehead, all these retard potheads are high and causing mass destruction to the travel industry..just look, every other countries tourists are increasing, yet drug hub of S.E. Asia Thailand are decreasing....it's not a good place any more having to worry about some potheads mental reaction

You might well find that the sentences for smuggling this amount of cannabis can potentially be very light in the UK and mainland Europe. The risk vs reward equation may mean people will continue to do it.

A suspended sentence was given out recently for a suitcase full of weed from Thailand. Money equivalent to grafting on a building site for 2 years vs a suspended sentence may well be an attractive proposition.

Indeed the defendant was not white. Perhaps a larger sample size is required.

The golden triangle has never gone away, with particular reference to opium/heroin, now also producing a large amount of crystal methamphetamine. Nothing whatsoever to do with cannabis. Get your facts straight.

Whether Newcastle or Bangkok calling something a drug occurs because politicians make it illegal, not because they have no medical use.
