Trump to Canada: “It will cost you $61 billion, but zero if you become 51st state”

Ok. Do you know what our army was like before WWI or II? A joke by all accounts. How'd we do? Ramped up and joined the fight LONG before our southern neighbours. No need for a ginormous army or defence spending in peace times, unless your objective is to attempt to enforce your will on the rest of the world.

Isnt trump trying to impose his misguided nonsensical "will" on the rest of the world right now?

Also, Canada has allies.

They are collectively known as NATO.

Pretty silly for us all to put any time into a U.S.-Canada war hypothetical.  And there's no way any of these countries would supply anything to Canada.

Besides the American invasion of Canada in 1775, and continued fighting throughout the War of 1812, Canada has faced American invasion on several other occasions.

1. The Dickson Filibuster // 1836

2. The Patriot War // 1837–1838

3. The Fenian Raids // 1866–1871

4. The Oka Crisis // 1990

In case of any war, Russia is ready to help Canada to defend its independence. Welcome to our big soviet family!

Two hundred years ago today, a 36-year old America declared war, for the second time, against Great Britain. The plan was to conquer Canada and wrest North America for the United States once and for all. But, by pretty much all measures, the war was a total mess…

...British forces attacked Washington and torched the White House.

Well, okay, if Canada really needs the help....

Trump needs to think a few steps ahead with this annex Canada idea. Imagine another state which is at least as lefty as California. Republicans would be sunk electorally after that. Same for all his H1-B Indians we wants. Democrat voters by a large margin. Think Trump, think.

Don't worry, TACO.

Pay nothing so no taxes?

US states don't pay anything to the federal government????

No such thing as a free dome !

What Trump does not realize is that it would be more like 8 states and everyone of them bright blue.

Wonder how much rent the Canadians are going to charge for the land needed to get those sights closer to the enemy ( trumps best pal putin) or perhaps they will say naa blow them up over your own country ehh elbows up tell trump to stick it!

Exactly. The U.S. would obviously need to locate some detection equipment in Canada (and even missiles), and probably also in Northern Europe, as the shortest way is over the North pole (even for China and NK, it seems).

The Canada 51st state story is just one giant private joke Trump likes to play to deflect media attention.

He's having a laugh. Nobody in their right mind could believe Canada would become a state of the US.

Trump will annex Greenland.

It's been done many a year ago, In the mid 50's and early 60's

At great expense at the time

How much did the DEW Line cost to build?
The DEW Line was an incredible undertaking of its time. It required more than a half-million tonnes of material, enough gravel to build a road from Vancouver to Halifax, and 25,000 construction workers. It cost $350 million – a large sum for the 1950s

Replaced with North Warning System and with satellites

The DEW Line, or Distant Early Warning Line, was a chain of radar stations built across Canada's Arctic during the Cold War to detect potential Soviet bomber and ICBM attacks. The DEW Line was a joint project between Canada and the United States, with the US largely funding and managing the project. The line stretched from Alaska to Iceland, with a significant portion located within Canadian territory.

True. He just does it because he knows that it makes paranoid lefties jump.

In reality, the US would be foolish to annex Canada. The Americans don't need 40 million more people with the GDP of Mississippi.

Must be a lot of paranoid conservatives in Canada because Trump's antics cost the Conservatives the election despite their enormous lead prior his remarks.

Strange you should bring that up. The conservatives actually got 2.4 million MORE votes, and 24 more seats in Parliament, compared to the previous election. So I am not sure where you get your data.

ETA It is obvious to anyone that the vote in Canada shifted from scared lefties to the Liberal Party.

Canada's GDP in 2023 was 2.142 trillion US dollars

Mississippi's GDP in 2023 was 119.5 billion dollars

Opinion polls at the start of the year had the Conservatives over 20 percentage points ahead of the Liberals. But with the new PM Mark Carney and his robust reaction to the tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump, that lead evaporated., their voters fled.

Worth mentioning is Canada's superior social benefits  in relation to the US: universal healthcare, stronger employment insurance programs, and more generous family benefits.

Since he is clearly not in his right mind, he's serious about it.

LEt me add some facts to your narrative:  Yes, taking Canada etc away from an inveterate enemy was a reasonable goal but poorly executed.  But in the end we won, just like the first time.

I'd gladly welcome Alberta with their oil and Banff National Park.  And their can-do attitude.  We can call them North Montana.

Their snowflakes in the East, not so much.

Canada used to be a wonderful country with that man as leader Trudeau

He was very supportive of massive immigration to help those poor immigrants and the reading of library books by transexuals to children

Same as Mohammed in Scotland a lovely guy who wanted to make Scotland better

Then why is there a booming business in the northern states from Canadians crossing over to pay for healthcare that they'd have to wait for back home?

Sooner or later, you run out of OPM.

Their voters fled?!?  They got more than 2 million MORE votes than the previous election. How is that fleeing?

The polls were based on Trudeau as leader. When the Liberals (wisely) jettisoned him, they got a bump. And the Conservatives ran a poor campaign, they were not prepared.  Finally, the left vote coalesced around Carney. You can see that in the numbers for the NDP and Bloc. Both got shelled. Their voters went Liberal overwhelmingly.

Somebody better inform Trump we already whupped Canada then!

And he can sign an ezzekuktive order to ban poutine forthwith.

So, in other words Canada, Australia, and I think you mentioned EU and Europe before. You believe US is right and all others wrong. In reality, that is not the case. You are the one who is misinformed.

Anyway, you say it´s a great deal for Canada. I don´t think they care so much about 61 billion as a whole nation. If he said 610 billion then it would have been something. However, a minimalistic mind deals in minimalistic ways.
