Police are searching for a foreign national who caused significant damage to an ATM in Pattaya after his bank card was swallowed during a failed transaction. The incident occurred around 16:35 on 14 June, in front of an Indian restaurant on Thappraya Road in Pattaya, Chonburi province.

 

Police Lieutenant Kriangkrai Kaewpipop, Deputy Investigation Inspector of Pattaya City Police Station, received a report of the vandalism and quickly informed Pattaya police chief Colonel Anek Srathongyu before proceeding to the scene with officers.

 

Upon arrival, authorities found the ATM, owned by a local bank, with visible damage to its display screen panal, which had been forcibly detached from the machine. Officers confirmed that the secure cash storage inside the ATM was unaffected. They attempted to reposition the screen, but it remained non-functional.

 

Witnesses at the scene described the suspect as a tall foreign man who appeared to be intoxicated. According to bystanders, the man had attempted to withdraw cash but was unsuccessful despite multiple attempts. The machine then swallowed his card, reportedly triggering an angry outburst.

 

“He was clearly frustrated,” said one witness. “He punched and kicked the screen, even kneeing it with full force. Eventually, the screen detached and he took what looked like a slip of paper, probably a receipt, but no money. Then he just walked away before the police got here.”

 

Lieutenant Kriangkrai has since contacted the bank to determine whether they wish to file an official complaint. Meanwhile, Pattaya’s investigative police unit has been assigned to identify and locate the suspect for legal action.

Must be easy to track him. All ATMs have CCTV and his card is in the machine

Why wouldn't the bank file?  Is he hoping no charge/no work will be involved?

Poor guy, Imagine the frustration. You've got your little chickybabe waiting for you at the bar to bar fine and your ATM card gets swallowed up.

A nice change, a drunker story that doesn't start with, "incident occurred around 04:35am..."

Sad part is. He must return to the bank immediately upon their opening to collect his card otherwise the bank will cut it in half. I always hated when their ATM machines ate my card. It happens if making a mistake with your PIN number 3 times.. Once, it happened to me while travelling. I did not return to that bank to collect my card for 2 days. When i got there they had already cut it in half and disposed of it. 

This guy must have been pissed off to do the damage it claims. He will surely have to pay damages so I hope his card has a lot of money on it.

Such a shame that their efforts came to nought! Who would ever have thought that two senior Thai police couldn't put the cash machine back together again. (I feel some suitable nursery rhymes may fit the situation and give an healthy insight into how things work here.)

 

I must admit, I was skeptical about their chances of success given about 90% of them couldn't tie their own laces.

This ATM was outside a restaurant and not at a bank. These machines are serviced and restocked by a contractor, which includes removing the cassette where 'captured' cards end up. Getting the card back from any bank's remote ATM will be very challenging, if not impossible. A lot of machines colocated at branches are similarly serviced by a contractor, and branch staff no longer have access to the machine.

 

In my experience when a Kasikorn ATM opposite the Naklua fish market 'ate' my card that got stuck in the ejector after the transaction was completed, it was quicker just to notify my bank, report the card as lost and order a replacement.

They may cut the original in half but when this has happened to me, I merely put a stop on the original card and then go into the bank the next day, tell them the machine swallowed my card and for 100 baht, they promptly issue a new one. Easy peasy.

True there are companies that service these machines. But they are controlled by a local bank. You can call the number on the machine and get the location to the bank where they brought your card. It is not as difficult as you make it seem. Just a lot of hassle when you needed the money.

Not so "Easy Peasy" if the ATM card is from a foreign bank miles away from Thailand. Need back up cards just in case. Most probably a young guy with only one card.  

The easiest way to identify him. They got his card, then his name, then check the data and arrest him at his place. Ban him. We don't want to have these riffraff here

not when it’s a foreign bank. If you’re lucky they’ll FedEx it to you from overseas to Thailand but sometimes some banks in some foreign countries require you to fly to said foreign country and spend days in hotels filing police paperwork and all. Not only does it ruin your holiday but could put your entire finances at risk. I know as it’s happened to me and cost me tens of thousands THB plus a week and a half of my life, and I really didn’t have the time or money to spare, and I was mightily pissed off at the overzealous Thai ATM machine, as it shut down in one of the oh so frequent power outages while I was trying to withdraw money, with correct PIN number of course, and then its pathetic excuses as to how or why they couldn’t give me back my ATM card. So I definitely feel this guy’s pain. It’s why I try to avoid cash in Thailand as much as possible and just do credit cards or other digital transactions.
