Thailand Tightens Cannabis Distribution with New Regulations

Public Health Minister Somsak Theopsuthin has announced new measures to regulate cannabis distribution, focusing on medical use and ending its free availability across Thailand. The announcement on 24th June revokes the 2022 directive and now categorises cannabis flowers as a controlled herb.

 

Under the latest regulations, anyone interested in studying, researching, exporting, selling, or processing cannabis must secure a licence under Section 46.

 

Compliance with various conditions, including detailed reporting to the Director-General, is mandatory.

 

Sellers must also ensure their products are sourced from farms certified by the Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine for good cultivation and harvesting standards.

 

The regulations explicitly prohibit the sale of cannabis through vending machines, online platforms, and within certain public venues, such as temples, dormitories, public parks, zoos, and amusement parks. Only medical professionals are permitted to purchase cannabis in business settings.

 

Minister Somsak made it clear that this decision is unrelated to the Bhumjaithai Party’s recent departure from the Pheu Thai-led coalition government.

 

The party previously played a significant role in the legislation decriminalising marijuana on 9th June 2022, which allowed the possession and use of all cannabis parts, provided the tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content does not exceed 0.2%.

 

Cannabis flowers, known as "buds," are of particular interest due to their cannabinoids and terpenes, which are responsible for the plant’s psychoactive effects and potential health benefits. These flowers, exclusively from female plants, must be dried before consumption.

 

This regulatory development marks a significant shift in Thailand’s cannabis policy, balancing previous liberalisations with controlled oversight.

 

The government’s focus remains on ensuring the safe and medically appropriate use of cannabis, mitigating concerns about recreational misuse.

How does this affect the shops that sell on the internet and ship direct to one's home? Will all of those be shut down? Will they require one to upload a copy of their doctor's certificate....... which is easily photo shopped?

I also read yesterday that sellers are required to keep contact information for all purchasers and make that information available to the authorities if asked. I don't use, but it seems to me that would be a huge deterrent to keep customers away.

Why jump from one extreme to another. Some people wish to use it as a recreational drug, just as they do with cigarettes. Banning the substance is not the answer; it will only create pushers, jail more users, waste police time.

Why not make it less available:
1. restrict the number of outlets (say 2 in Pattaya, 4 in Bangkok, etc) by charging a huge licence fee, to the highest bidders. 2. charge a very high duty on the sale of the product.

Like cigarettes the product should not be flaunted to the sight if non-users and children.

Fair enough. Guess it depends on the job. High stress job it might be just the trick. Reality is though rexreational users probably don't go to work stoned the same as tje majority of people that drink alcohol don't go to work drunk. This of course is a generalisation.

It seems weed smokers are not smart enough, same as everything else in life that has side effects outside the user's own sphere. 

 

How this became with public show and use almost everywhere to annoyance for people who do not use, and also families, it was just a matter of time. And if you guys who want the right and possibility even can't see it or take criticism for how it became, doesn't make your case better.
