What with dodgy ticket sellers

What makes the vendors "dodgy" enough to prevent you from buying a legitimate ticket?

Never indulged. What with dodgy ticket sellers, and then if you did have a winning ticket, would they actually pay out and would you be happy to have those around you knowing you’d won and then have your face plastered over the media? Thais are great, but they don’t seem to enjoy it much when a whitey is seen to be taking something away from them. May as well paint a large bullseye on your forehead. Lol

Ridiculous.

6 million is hardly a life changing amount

It is for the 99.999% of people, i.e. Thais, who enter.

That's always been my view too. Waste of 80 baht. Poor payouts to winners.

Not sure foreigners were ever excluded from buying or collecting a winning though..

It is if you just happen to buy 7-8-9-10  tickets of the winning number which seems to amazingly happen a few times ever year and this impossibility has been going on for decades...

It is not an "impossibility" and nothing has been "going on for years" in that context (that your tone suggests is dodgy) when multiple tickets of the same number are legitimately available.

you are aware this is a news story about how farang lottery ticket purchases just became legal right?

Foreigners have always been able to buy lottery tickets and be paid winnings, it is not something that has just become legal.

Then WTF is the point of the story?

Marketing.

Marketing.

Indeed, but on who's behalf? has the lottery board sprung to market to expats on AN?

seems unlikely,

For major prizes, head to the Government Lottery Office in Bangkok, while smaller prizes can be collected from regional offices or authorised agents. Note that winnings are subject to a 0.5% withholding tax, and a stamp duty of 1 baht per 200 baht of prize money is also applicable.

No, they can't.

Yes, they can, I have had B2000 payouts twice. Any lottery shop will pay out the smaller prizes, no need to involve banks.

I'm telling you, I went to two of them where I usually buy tickets and they said, "no." It was one of them that directed me to Krungthai bank.

Completely agree, and it's ridiculous that you have to visit numerous sellers to get "your" numbers!

It's just as ridiculous to think that "your" numbers are more likely to win than any randomly selected ticket.

Wonder, what would happen if a foreigner, particularly a Westerner, ever won the jackpot... Would they really, without much bickering, pay out 6 million baht?

Yes, why would they not pat out?   The GLO website specifically states that anyone enter and be paid prizes and non-Thais have collected their winnings successfully.

My neighbor won an 80 000 baht price a few years ago.

He was soo happy!

Threw a big party, dancing girls, concert style music and loads of food and drink.

He had to borrow extra money to pay for it all!

Yes, B6,000,000 for B80 is such a waste of money.

Having said that, a Thai friend bought me a ticket once. They reckoned there’s no problem in them paying out to foreigners. Just never bothered, esp after hearing of fake tickets/dodgy ticket sellers in the past.

To the best of my knowledge no farang has ever won one of the top lottery payouts...Not a single time....At least in the last 20 years, and very possibly in entire history of the Thai lottery....

Can't win or loose,unless you play the game 🙂 Just,don't abuse it !! 🙂

Time to stop lamely counting other members' posts and issuing directions to them.   Have I posted anything inaccurate or unhelpful?

Think what they’re trying to say is it’s not a great jackpot. UK one used to be £1 (~B40) and would routinely roll over to tens of millions (billions of baht). Euromillions frequently over £100M for about 100 baht ticket. At the end of the day, it’s a tax on the poor and the stupid. 😀

Better off playing European, same cost but far more when it comes to prize money. The most I won on the Thai lottery was 2,000 baht enough for a steak dinner and a couple of beers

The first time a foreigner wins they will need to use the money to get the hell out of here!

How do you know which vendors are genuine government sellers?

If you were to win - where do you cash in your winning ticket(s)?

Are they sold daily? or monthly - the official tickets?

I wouldn't mind investing a a small amount of money for both my wife and daughter. I'd be happy for them to have the opportunity to win some extra cash.

Advice please?

Foreigners dreaming of winning the Thai lottery rejoice. You can legally purchase lottery tickets in Thailand, provided they're bought from licensed vendors. With draws held on the 1st and 16th of each month, except during certain holidays, your chance to strike it rich is never too far away.

Priced at 80 baht per ticket and sold in pairs, each ticket flaunts a unique six-digit number. A standard lottery set holds up to 1 million tickets, but beware: numbers deemed lucky often carry a price premium, despite government efforts to curb this. The prize structure is exciting, with significant rewards for top winners.

Prize Details Revealed

The Thai lottery features multiple prize categories, boasting a hefty total prize pool of 48 million baht across 14,168 winning tickets. Here’s the tantalising breakdown:

First Prize (1 winner): 6,000,000 baht
Second Prize (5 winners): 200,000 baht
Third Prize (10 winners): 80,000 baht
Fourth Prize (50 winners): 40,000 baht
Fifth Prize (100 winners): 20,000 baht

Consolation Prizes (2 winners): 100,000 baht for numbers close to the first prize.
Matching the first or last digits can win additional prizes.

First 3 digits (2,000 winners): 4,000 baht
Last 3 digits (2,000 winners): 4,000 baht
Last 2 digits (10,000 winners): 2,000 baht.

Claiming Your Fortune

If luck shines your way, claim your prize using a passport or government-issued ID and your winning ticket. Prizes need to be claimed within two years of the drawing date.

For major prizes, head to the Government Lottery Office in Bangkok, while smaller prizes can be collected from regional offices or authorised agents. Note that winnings are subject to a 0.5% withholding tax, and a stamp duty of 1 baht per 200 baht of prize money is also applicable.

Bringing Home the Bacon

Planning to take your winnings back home? Consider any customs declarations required due to the amount. Each country has unique tax regulations on foreign income, so consulting a local tax adviser is advisablem writes Bangkok Post.

Remember, while the Thai lottery offers thrilling opportunities, it’s crucial to play responsibly and understand any potential financial implications.

How is this news, l buy lottery tickets every two weeks and have been doing so for many years.

Was legal for years already

13 years and won nothing, probably one of worst lotteries in the world.

Always surprises me that apart from the odd single ticket winner here and there most of winners who win the jackpot buy 10-30 tickets of the same number. Who in their right mind would think to buy that 🤔

But remember only to buy if you've encountered a two headed snake, survived an horrendous car crash or a fortune teller has told you you're due for some good luck!

Consider me tantalised. But I still ain’t buying a ticket

My wife and I won 10,000 2 years ago. At that time the Nonthaburi GLO office wasn’t too far so we went there.  As I actually bought the ticket, I signed it they paid me - using all my data (passport etc) and minus the very minor taxes due.

It was actually quite smooth. The part that took the longest was the validating the ticket itself.  Once the ticket was validated as genius and the numbers verified, the paperwork was less than 10 minutes and they gave me a paper check (i don’t recall if they offered a cash pay option) against Krungthai bank. Krungthai accepted it and my account was credited 2 days later (i deposited it past the cutoff time for that days check clearance process)

Everything I have seen, heard and experienced tells me that foreigners are eligible to legally play and win with the GLO bi-monthly lottery subject to the same rules for Thais.

I myself don’t find the ticket price relative to the odds and max payouts to be hugely compelling per se, but it is one of the few legal ways to gamble in the kingdom.
