But the mobile phone company definitely had the old expired passport on file for me, I wondered if that would make any difference

I assume at that time you updated the new passport number with your mobile service provider.

If one has a mobile number tied to their bank account(s), best to update the new passport number with their mobile service provider, especially these days when the banks are really tightening things up.  Just another item to add to the 'things to do' list after getting a new passport.

Yes, I made sure everything was up to date and matched between the bank and DTAC which is my mobile provider.

I went the mobile store first, then the bank - they already had my new passport but I wanted to double check about the mobile phone checking system - you see I am now in Cambodia and wanted to avoid any issues while over here - all seems well but I can see where it might fall apart due to expired ID documents that remain unaltered when renewed.

I edited my post before having seen that you replied. Did that because I realized you are on top of things, so I didn't need to 'ask' if you had done it!

Right, you really want to stay up on these things, be 'pro-active' if you can. Being outside the country brings an added challenge to navigating all the bank stuff going on.

Worth noting that this topic is about Krungsri, and that they are about to get rid of their "website" banking as well - so same as with SCB, you'll have to use their app from October on.

I agree with you that this is a benefit of using Bangkok Bank (and Kasikorn Bank as well). For how much longer though, I'm wondering? They may well make a similar move soon.

IMHO these two banks are the big boys and don't see them closing their online thingy anytime soon. Have punters worldwide.

It is possible to check whether your SIM registration is compliant for banking purposes by dialling *161# If you then get some Thai text followed by the last 4 digits of your existing passport number, you're OK.

Not sure whether the OP can do this from the States, though - and your second sentence would appear to be particularly apposite in his case!

Yeah, I got all my ducks in a row before leaving for one of my 3 month trips - no problems at all.

Thanks, but I don't think I can do this from USA.  I put my Dtac SIM in and couldn't even get a signal.  But I will do this as soon as I land at BKK!

I tried that - but I can't connect at all with my DTAC SIM.  Maybe DTAC also turned me off...  😞

Worked for me inside Thailand just now.

Tried yesterday to transfer money from Australian bank account to Bangkok Bank. Not possible. Tried my Thai wife's account at the same Chiangmai branch and no problem.

Strange. Going to have to contact Bangkok Bank to see what the problem is.

All these banks are more and more BS, and then they use the excuse of preventing black money but it just to get even more control over you. Cash is king, that makes up 95% of it with me.
That other 5% is for overseas payments.

How did that show at the sending end (Australia)? Did they refuse to transfer the money outright, or did they process the transfer and then Bangkok Bank bounced the money?

Krungsri are setting up a new account Krungsri Biz to replace your current online account, I had countless emails and text messages advising me about it. They  send you a new user name, and password. I did it the other day. They send one by email the other by text message, once you log  in you can change your password.

Banking is getting tighter/more restrictive.  I've had similar problems with accessing USA bank from Thailand.  I have to use a VPN located in USA and if OTP is necessary it needs to go to a USA number.  You may want to consider using a VPN located in Thailand and have the ability to receive an OTP to the registered Thai number (which I'm guessing will require you to have roaming).  Good luck.  I've always considered banking/financials is a moving target, just when you have it all figured out, they will change something.

I have a feeling that *102# is for checking one's phone number, not the last for digits of one's passport number àregistered with the mobile phone provider.

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place

It's consistently stated on True and DTAC pages, certainly the True USSD works (*153#).  Can't check to DTAC version as not my provider.

  1. Click to check whether the registered mobile phone number you are using matches the information linked to the mobile banking service.

True and DTAC monthly customersPress *179*ID card number#call

TrueMoney prepaid customersPress *153# to call.

Dtac prepaid customersPress *102# to call.

My SIM is on my old passport number from eight years ago, and I have had no issues. None of the information I have read on SIM registration and mobile banking mentions passport numbers, only that the names on the account and SIM must match. The bank has all my old passport numbers on file. That said, there is often a lack of consistency in Thailand when applying new policies.

I can confirm that for DTAC sim cards, *102# does indeed display the phone number and the last 4 digits of the passport/ID card used to register the sim.

Just tried it again to confirm.

Mistery solved: different mobile phone providers use different USSD codes.

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place
