Have You Met Foreigners in Thailand Who Talk Big, But Live Small?

Featured Replies

I've met quite a few foreigners who talk a big game, like they’ve got some major deal going on. You’ll hear things about big property investments, past business empires, crypto wins, or some project they’re “about to launch.” But then you notice they’re living in cheap rentals, don't spend much, and seem to have an unusual amount of free time.

Maybe they’re just harmless storytellers trying to impress others. Or maybe there’s more to it. This kind of fake posturing could also damage the reputation of the broader foreign community, especially for those who live quietly, play by the rules, and don’t cause problems.

And you have to wonder, how often does this kind of behavior spill over into trouble? Are these the same types who overstay visas, run shady hustles, perpetrate scams or leave unpaid bills behind? Or is it all just empty talk from people who want to feel important?

You must have come across or at least heard of this type of expat in Thailand...

I'm starting to get suspicious of the genuine human nature of the op. Too many similar topics that would appear to have an agenda of generating arguments.

I find it best to smile, nod occasionally, feign interest................. then nip to the toilet and quietly disappear.

I assume this is another thinly disguised anti-white racist thread.

Or do you include non-white and non-western non-white foreigners in your thoughts?

Why the obsession with what other white men do?

it's not that far-fetched.

I'm sure there are expats like you describe in Thailand.

run shady hustles or empty talk? BOTH, probably. There's both types that probably do exist.

thank god I don't hang out in bars though.

Are you able to have a conversation, or do you just prefer to start topics each day so people notice you?

How do you get by each day in Thailand? Judging by the amount of questions you keep asking you do seem pretty clueless about the place, did you travel here alone or did someone have to hold your hand?

Absolutely agree 100%, he seems like the person you'd cross the street to avoid, proper weirdo.

No, haven’t met you yet.

Maybe they do have stuff going on but prefer to live simply?

My Dad's mate growing up had a multi million pound property business going on, but drove around in a 20 year old dented Escort van and dressed like a plasterer.

I've met a few guys in Thailand living in the expensive rental, nice car (also rented), wearing the gold chains and looking like they were "living large" who suddenly disappeared back to Europe. Turns out they were skint.

😁 I met a few, and the last one I met, he wanted to transfer money to my account, and I give cash to him.

Always some credit card problems and other people create problems for them, but they are rich, and least they claim

Best not to flaunt wealth in Thailand, especially to other expats in BKK or Pattaya.

Couple of cases spring to mind. The guy transported in a freezer in the back of a pickup truck and the guy beaten to death in his condo for his ATM PIN.

Both killed by other expats.

No adults are impressed by another's wealth. Bragging about having money or things shows a lack of respect and a need to feed an ego. Showing off while others around you are barely getting by, as happens here, isn't a way to make friends. Some who have a lot of money made it by hurting others in some way, and some jobs only contribute to other rich people's lives, so it isn't something to brag on. It brings out jealousy in some and again isn't a way to try to fit in , especially in a country where most are poor. Acting like you have a lot of money is also disrespectful, trying to be something you're not, especially when found out.

AN loves these types which is why their posts get highlighted and pushed to the front of the "popular" posts.

There’s a certain subset of posters whose sole purpose appears to be provocation. They operate under the thinly veiled guise of asking seemingly innocuous questions - carefully crafted to spark controversy - or by making outrageous claims they know will inevitably ignite conflict. It’s not discussion they’re after, but disruption masquerading as curiosity.

We had one of these people come visit the condo from time to time. Spoke to him twice, told me has American, ex military stationed in Hawaii. Gained Thai citizenship, joined their army, showed them "a thing or two", rose to the rank of colonel, was licensed to carry in Thailand but he couldn't show us what he had on him, made sure he was seen tipping the security so he could hang around, could speak, write, read fluent perfect Thai, he had to add he taught Thai people how speak Thai, at a school somewhere while doing the military stint, we wouldn't know it.

The second time he was standing down along the adjacent klong late at night, dressed in black, small utility bag and a pair of binoculars.  Turns out he married a Thai woman, had a kid, she left him, and he spent random nights stalking her hoping to see if she had "company" via the apartment balcony windows. He said I pay the security guys so they let me do this.

One of those people who grow their story as they're speaking to you, it becomes more disjointed and outlandish as they go on but they're oblivious to how they sound.. mostly crazy.
