Whoever is above the police need impose a 5000 baht fine on police not enforcing the laws or nothing will happen anyways. One more law on a stack of useless paper.

I would not worry this.. I am most certain the police will use this to collect large fines as much as possible.

  • They can't, or not supposed to smoke in many Restaurants but they do..., Having twised your ankle on 99% of Pattaya footpath's some  people want a Fag while waiting for the Ambulance..

  • Thailand loves to makes new rules when they know no one will follow them.

  • That's a larger fine than not stopping for a pedestrian at a crosswalk.  Color me confused but I think potentially running someone down and killing them is far more serious than smoking in the open ai

So where exactly is a smoker going to smoke now?

Is there some obligation for City Hall to provide places to smoke? They struggle to supply parking spaces and keep the roads and pavements in order.  Perhaps these now defunct weed shops can become smoking houses?

No way in hell is a smoker going to quit on the spot...

If a smoker cant smoke on the beach thats one thing....But the walkway too......No F...ing way....

This will be 100% ignored by all smokers...

In front of ATM machine. 5000 THB a puff. A real money making machine for the police.

I wish they'd ban durian. :coffee1:

The king of fruits. Smells great and tastes fantastic. I hated the smell and thought it would taste bad. I tried some and was an instant convert. Absolutely love it. As for the smoking thing Thailand is becoming more and more a nanny state which is a shame.

Sir.... Its the retired, balding overweight, cargo short wearing, beer drinking cig smokers that made Pattaya great..... Every cig smoker in Pattaya is upholding a fine tradition...

We are lucky to have so many cig smokers in Pattaya..

cargo short wearing,

I refuse to carry a Thai man bag so I have no choice.🧐 Although good quality ones are getting harder to find.

Only ex-pats & tourists will be "targetted". The locals will continue to leave behind a mountain of trash on the sand as they climb into their double parked 1.5 Million baht pick-ups. 🙃🙃

I'm not a smoker but they deserve to at least have some designated zones along the beachfront.

Perhaps like the filtrated capsules found at airports and the like can be built from the 5000THB fines collected, so that smokers who want to light up on the beach can feel even more ostracized for their filthy habit!

No not so much referring to the retired group. Not sure about your location @redwood1 This said demographic I'm seeing in Pattaya are part of the general wt... are they doing here crowd . Thanks to all the online publicity in last few years... Sir

I'd suggest out of sight of the tents they will set up to fine foreigners, like they do on Sukhumvit between Nana and Asoke in Bangkok.

In the hundreds of times I've been there, I have never seen them fining a Thai person.  Though I have often seen Thais throwing butts and other trash in that area.  But dozens of foreigners.

Personally, I think this is a cash grab, perhaps to make up for falling arrivals.  But I am rather cynical that way.

I get fined 2000 baht but get away with 500 baht.It was many foreigners and thais too that get caught.

The thais get away with 50-100 baht. The foreigner 2000 baht.I asked the officer how many they fined so far and he said about 35 people.I get away with 500 baht because i speak thai well and the officer was coming from Surin where my exwife come from.

I'm not a smoker and dislike the second hand smoke intensely.

I can understand a littering fine of 5,000 baht. But the notion of smoking in a outdoor area being illegal just strikes me as another bull<deleted> Thai law.

I wonder how many Chinese getting caught up in this scam will it take for another few thousand to decide not to Holiday here. Chinese are legend smokers

And they all can have it. The days of nice beach are long gone: Ended with city hall /contractors/kickbacked concrete "improvements" Plus all these happy sh*t events along the beach side parking. Forget about it. Photo for those not here before: Just across from the Pattaya lands above walking st. Have a look at the sh*tshow there now

Ifa pig pings ya with a fine for smoking a dart on the beach... is that a witten fine to be paid at the police station ?

If you flout the rules there are two options....pay the fine on the spot or....you have to swim to Ko Lan and back 😂

..No place else to smoke but in the road dogging traffic, trying  not to get killed...

I'm reliably informed that the dogging  business happens in the park 😁

The issue in 'any' of the tourist area's is the duel enforcement....

In Nana area there have long been reports of the BMA charging foreigners 2000 baht for dropping a cigarette butt (littering) meanwhile Thai's working the area smoke freely (and dump the butt)...  its targeted enforcement.

My guess is, not one Thai will face this 5000 baht fine for smoking on the beach... Why? because authorities know (or will assume) they can't pay the fine, so they just won't bother and file it under the 'too much effort to deal with look the other way' bin...

Similar happens with Helmet wearing - in area's such as Pattaya and Patong, Thai's are ignored while foreigners are stopped for not wearing a helmet... Mostly...  I say mostly because the other day I saw a video of a youngster on a bike stopped for his pillion not wearing a helmet - we was given burpee's as a punishment.

OF course, I'm not condoning any of the above, smoking in public area's or non-helmet wearing etc...

But, I am highlighting how this gives further fuel for the BiB and Authorities to charge foreigners more fines, while continuing to ignore the Thai's.
