I've seen smoking rooms at airports before. If the smokers don't already have lung cancer, by the time they leave the room they will.

If the room is full lock the doors

Note they are talking about new "prototype" smoking rooms.

Suvarnabhumi actually opened basic smoking rooms again last April. A post on the TAT Facebook page 12 weeks ago showed a small room, no tables or chairs, "frosted glass" windows and an open door (presumably a sliding glass door ?). It noted that smokers were either standing or squatting in the room while smoking.

Suvarnabhumi actually closed it's smoking rooms in 2019 but it seems the Chinese are upset about that (being one of the heaviest smoking nations on the planet).

Just last year, The National Tobacco Control Committee rejected a proposal to build smoking rooms inside Suvarnabhumi Airport.

However - it seems the decision to put the smoking rooms back in came from - the Prime Minister herself.
In a "directive" to "align Thai airport facilities with global standards."

And if you search for what the "global standards" are - you'll see this:

"The global standard is shifting towards smoke-free environments in airports, with a greater emphasis on protecting public health.

As awareness of the risks of secondhand smoke increases and technologies improve, more airports are expected to adopt smoke-free policies in the future. "

Another reason airports are happy to close the smoking rooms (aside from the obnoxious smell) was the cost of having to keep them clean and ventilated (so the smoke-filled air doesn't end up in the main ventilation system).

One article I read this morning says they (Suvarnabhumi) re-opened the smoking rooms to cut down on the amount of people smoking "illegally" (i.e. in bathrooms or other areas).

Note that 4 of the 50 busiest airports in the world are located in China and all 4 are "smoke free".

However, most airports in Asia and Europe (and the Middle East) are not "smoke free" but they are trending more towards "smoke free" than the other way.

Except places like Thailand it seems.

I live in Shanghai. In Pudong airport, one of the busiest airports of the world, there are at least 3 or 4 smoking rooms in both terminals.  So yeah, no 'smoking free'.

I doubt you’ll “catch cancer” by passing by a smoking room at the airport for a possible duration of 10 seconds.  Get realistic and put things in perspective.  A little tolerance on both sides would be nice!

Then take your argument to the experts.

They had them before and closed them, are they really missed? Just go without, it'll do you some good.

They should smoke in those prayer rooms 😝

I laughed when I saw the much touted “smoking room” at Swampy last week, it is a million baht coffin, on the OUTSIDE of the airport! Many people smoking all around it, none inside!

FINALLY somebody uses one brain cell to realize that IF a smoking room is needed, it is needed on the inside of the airport, where it is banned, not outside LOL!

Smoking Rooms aka 'Kipper rooms' should include a shower room where fag suckers can clean themselves and change into clean clothing (having put their stinking attire in sealed airtight bags). This would then make sure the person they will be sitting next to, on a 12 hour flight, does not have suffer the stench of these addicts. Will the kipper rooms be for vapers also ?

Bring back smoking on planes!! My customer satisfaction is reduced because of this stupid ban.

Added bonus: the meltdown of puritan anti-smokers 😂😂

Charge them 300 Baht to use it

fine them 30,000 when they are found doing it where prohibited.

filthy Cancer Stick Tax.

I'll be the judge of that,

'Smoking Room' sounds so much better than 'Gas Chamber'.

WHY? If you can't be at the airport for a couple of hours and not smoke you have a problem. These smoking rooms always leak smoke into the hallways. If you have to have them put them far away from normal places. Make the smokers work to get to them.

A few hours....you gotta be there 3 hours befor your flight...what's your problem, you don't have to use them

It's a good move, for the smokers.

If they want to sit in one of them rooms full of smoke,  go ahead.

It does not affect the non smokers, so what's the big deal.

Oh the outrage. :coffee1:

Brainwashed from young, and you can gaurantee those same people.will drink and drive or ride push bikes like lunatics with no care for other roadusers seen it so many times

Oh dear , have I just upset the smokers ?

Banning cannabis whilst encouraging smoking, never say the Thais are rational.

Live with it. I will smoke as much as like.

If they did, it would be left side smoking, right side non-smoking!  🙂

Can one smoke weed in them? Or will smokers claim that only their tobacco smoke is non-offensive?

Given that technically cannabis is only decriminalised if it contains less than 0.2% of THC per dry weight, anyone smoking a joint would be doing so illegally.

Yup... its the dumb attitudes such as this that many find most offensive about smokers....

I'm a non-smoker, but believe smokers 'should' have rights - it would be more than sensible to provide an outside smoking area, air-side to allow smokers to enjoy a cigarette before they move to their boarding lounge...   There should be a few of them spread around the terminals.

This causes no harm to anyone else other than the smokers...   an outdoor area would also mean the smoke doesn't stick to their clothes quite so much - which is better for the other travellers.

The puritanical 'anti-smoking' nonsense is just as dumb as the comment above - tolerance and balance is the only sensible approach to such issues IMO.

Well that just proves how inconsiderate smokers are...... not giving a s**t about other people's right to fresh air, dropping  fag ends all over the place and prolonged coughing in the company of others nearby.  Smoking is something that should be coducted between consenting adults and in private !!

These smoking booths are already in use in Vietnam.

They are not a new idea.

Thailand going backwards into the dark ages, they clearly don't understand the number of diseases caused by smoking FFS, just incredible incompetence to encourage it, if people who smoke can't travel without smoking on the entire trip, let them stay at home.

It’s precisely attitudes like yours that invite the contempt of non-smokers. Individuals such as yourself are the reason smoking rooms have become the filthy, unpleasant spaces they are.

Most smokers, to their credit, do try to be considerate. But it’s the likes of you who spoil it for everyone else - your brash entitlement drowns out the voices of those who behave responsibly. And in doing so, you strip away any sympathy non-smokers might otherwise have, especially given that they are the majority and often the ones influencing decisions about smoking areas and related policies.

Your own asinine and blatantly selfish behaviour undermines the reputation of every reasonably minded smoker out there.

This is just as daft...

There's no harm in providing a reasonable smoking room for smokers...  just have them outside and well ventilated....  have a smoking Cafe outside - why not ???

With the exception of a few asinine and blatantly selfish attitudes, smokers are decent people just like anyone else.

Just because you (and I) are non-smokers, it doesn't mean we should remove something others enjoy  just because we don't like the habit...

You are a selfish person with no considerations to others. As for your statement, " These smoking rooms always leak smoke into the hallways" what a crock of sh.t" They are located beside auto walkways where there is no reason to stop. Except for the smoker. Maybe your nose is too close to your rear?

I'm sorry you don't like my attitude, but a person can only accept so much negativity and name calling, before lashing out.

P.S. Calling people you don't know "dumb" on the internet makes you a pompus a**
