Don't need Smart Crossings, you need Smart drivers, and that's not happening any time soon.

I was thinking maybe those steel posts that come up out of the ground would do it.

  • Hopeless decoration as usual. Very dangerous because giving a false sense of security to pedestrians

Just give us farang the ability to turn in video evidence, collect a bounty for our troubles, and start revoking licenses and impounding the cars/motorbikes of repeat offenders.

They should offer a bounty as they did for reports of abandoned cars... Create a special police force to follow up on video footage about drivers racing over zebra crossings. Offer the public 3,000 baht per video. Problem solved...

A Pattaya 'Smart" crossing' an oxymoron (more chance of one of those crossing) if ever if I have heard one certainly wouldn't happen at night time!

My summary idea based on suggested ideas such as; flashing lights on the road , stop lights. poles that pop up.

At the end of the day, especially at Beach Rd Pattaya they need, either;

1 Cameras at traffic lights to take video footage as evidence when a car /bike ignores a pedestrian crossing or actual or

2 RTP getting off their ass and randomly monitor the crossings.

If anyone breaks the rules it's not a peanut fine. Let's say 1000 baht fine, as a suggestion. But that will never happen as the RTP like their tea money more than the life of a pedestrian!

Pattaya has unveiled a groundbreaking traffic safety initiative that promises to improve road safety in the city. On Wednesday, 23 July, the city introduced an innovative pedestrian crossing system on Second Road near Soi 6, North Pattaya, designed to enhance safety for both locals and tourists.

This cutting-edge crossing features a push-button system that activates flashing lights, alerting oncoming traffic to slow down or stop. The aim is straightforward: reduce pedestrian accidents in high-traffic, tourist-frequented areas.

"Crossing the road used to be risky because cars wouldn’t stop," shared Sompong Phurimanak, a local vendor positioned near the new crossing. "Now, with these flashing lights, drivers will hopefully stop."

Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with both residents and visitors noting improved visibility and enhanced safety. This is the first of several planned installations, with city officials aiming to roll out similar smart crossings on Beach Road and Walking Street. This is part of a larger initiative to create a safer, more pedestrian-friendly Pattaya.

“Our goal is to make Pattaya a safer and more walkable city,” stated a spokesperson from Pattaya City Hall. The focus is particularly on areas bustling with tourists and significant foot traffic.

Some residents have raised concerns about whether drivers will obey the new system consistently. In response, city officials have promised that traffic police will be deployed to enforce compliance and issue fines to those who don’t adhere to the rules.

This project is a key part of Pattaya’s broader effort to modernise infrastructure and implement smart city technologies. By enhancing pedestrian safety, officials hope to improve the overall visitor experience and establish a new benchmark for road safety in Thailand.

Costing approximately 1.5 million THB, the new system represents a significant investment in public safety and urban development. The initiative is a testament to Pattaya’s commitment to becoming a safer and more innovative city, underscoring the importance of embracing technological advancements for the benefit of its residents and visitors alike.

That also happens in the UK and many other countries with road traffic control systems that are respected and laws that are enforced. Nobody drives through the red.

But quite often get another vehicle up their arse!

You can't fix stupid...

Also relevant to this matter, a large % of Thai drivers don't accept the notion that vehicles should stop for folks who are walking.

In reality an example of important folks have absolute priority. Poor foalks (walkers) have no priority.

Well seeing as Thai people even ignore barriers at railway crossings I suspect a few lights aren't going to make much difference.

What's your opinion on why they ignore them?

Germany leads the way...pedestrians are Gods, cyclists are followers, cars and their drivers are the  work of the devil.

Lol! How ever "smart" those crossings might be, always remember watching the traffic before entering! Try take your eyes of that damn phone!  In Thailand it has never been normal to even consider caring about those "Zebra" lines!  To them, it is only some kind of "Street art"!!😂

They're having a laugh, flashing lights. What Thailand needs are smart drivers, not smart crossings.

Try to make eye contact with drivers...

Wave your hands and run

Carry a brick as a deterrent when you cross there.

Utterly pointless having smart crossings when the Thai drivers are as dumb as ****

What would these groundbraking safety initiatives be, looking if theres any traffic before crossing the road??

I prefer to kick the vehicles close enough to me while in the Zebra crossing, or smash a bookbag at the mirror of their cars. I call it self-defense, I know a few shiny BMW's that left the scene with a nice dent....LOL

What you really need is "smart  pedestrians" crossing a busy road...

follow the green cross code (Darth Vader)

look left,  look right  wait for a clear space then continue to look right and left whilst quickly crossing the road...addendum for Thailand   look up and down and behind too...😛

As soon as drivers realize they don't have to stop for the flashing lights these crossings will become death traps to those who trust them.

For God's sake turn the light red and make them stop and use buzzer, like other countries, even then you have to be on full alert crossing.

Why not make it red lights, also known as a Pelican crossing in UK, but I doubt that would make any difference as red lights mean little in Thailand anyway.

I'm a black man.

THIS is what happens when you legalize marijuana. Take a break from the pipe, my dude.

And the tourists will arrive in numbers they never seen before and new trillions too.

At 1.36 a pick-up stops. because the light says 11 seconds left. Good man! ..but there are no people wanting to cross the road. 555

Not sure what the joke is

Because those lights have a preset amount of time before they turn green again, so the pedestrians that initially pushed the button have crossed the road already, but there may still follow more.

Do you suggest the pickup should just ignore the red light?

What's the difference between a Zebra and a Pelican Crossing?

I know, I can ask Chat GPT, but I like to say Good Morning to AN.

Not gonna help IMO.  They need crosswalk barriers to drop down and block traffic to prevent motorbikes from splitting the lane and zooming through.

Today at my daughters school, with a guard with a red flag protecting the Zebra crossing, a motorcycle taxi literally pushed through the flag arm of the guard and right through the children. I seriously gave thought to chasing him down and beating him within an inch of his life, somebody needs to knock some sense into these people, completely uncalled for and endangering children......Unacceptable!!!!
