A Nigerian national has been arrested after leading police on a high-speed chase through Phuket in the early hours of the morning of 1 August, ending with the discovery of over 70 grams of cocaine in his vehicle.

According to Chalong Police, the incident began during a routine checkpoint operation on Chao Fa West Road in Chalong subdistrict, Mueang Phuket. Officers reported that a car driven by a foreign man approached the checkpoint but suddenly accelerated in an apparent attempt to evade inspection.

Police pursued the vehicle through the Kathu area and successfully intercepted it on Chao Fa Mine Road a short time later.

The driver, identified only as Mr Basil, a Nigerian national, was detained at the scene. A search of the vehicle uncovered 73.31 grammes of cocaine, a Category 2 narcotic under the law.

Mr Basil has been charged with the illegal possession of a Category 2 controlled substance. The arrest has been formally recorded and all evidence has been submitted to investigators for legal proceedings.

Police have not yet disclosed further details regarding possible trafficking links or additional suspects, but the investigation remains ongoing.

Just goes to show that actions such as trying to avoid a checkpoint will lead to their closer inspection. I drive a lot in Thailand and pass through many checkpoints and only once have been stopped to check the contents of my vehicle, and the only reason they stopped me was i had a carload of foreigners with me that were guests at my wedding. I go through checkpoints 4 or 5 times a month and at most, they have pushed a breathalyzer in my face a few times in Bkk.

This African must have panicked and gave them an excuse to search his car. Or the checkpoint was waiting for his arrival already due to someone tipping them off about him..

Nigerian people are the most honest and lovely people on the planet I can't believe one would do such a thing.... Yeah right lock him up for the 20 years in our beautiful Bangkok Hilton.

At a checkpoint headed north, had Sakon Nakhon plates. Ole lady's kid brother on leave from Navy was taken out for drug test.

He was a poster child skinny look. He was clean.

The Sakon plates started it all.

His colour makes him more suspicious!

From the looks of that packaging, I think the coke was hidden somewhere other than the vehicle.

“car driven by a foreign man approached the checkpoint but suddenly accelerated in an apparent attempt to evade inspection.”

I’m guessing sudden acceleration while approaching a check point counts as an excuse to search his car?

20g coke + 50g bicarb = 70g coke

Whenever I hear "Mr. Basil," my brain instantly switches to Fawlty Towers mode.😄

It seems like a lot of Nigerians are in the drug business here don’t they know that’s reserved for Thai people only TIT

What do you expect , he is a kafir, (Not a Kaffir which is a derogatory term for a black man) Google it .
